A Rock and Rolla Y2K Toyota Corolla

From what I gather when the fault is evident, I'm stopping on just the front brakes. It's also likely to be either a fucked master cylinder or air in the system.

Does it have some sort of balance valve front-rear?

Sadly, unsure.

Likely cause seems to be either a seal on the master cylinder or air somewhere. It's with the garage next week.

With the little c180 off the road, and the Sierra both losing water and refusing to start, attentions have turned to the rest of the body.

The best outcome is to polish the whole car to as good a standard as possible, before letting it all naturally settle down at the same rate.

This means more elbow grease.

Splashed £27 on a cheap random polisher off of Argos. Relatively good results, certainly for the money.

Car comes up well. It's a 7/10 at best because there are a couple of scabs and the front end lets it down with stone chips. Fortunately, there's no rush to fix anything because the metal is so thick; it's just cosmetic.

Without going too two bucket wrongun, Autoglym Super Resin polish works well with those wee polishers.

What trim level was needed to reach the decadence of a rear wash/wipe? The bASeness is awesome.

Not far up the ladder to be fair, the modest L got you a rear wiper, radio set and analogue clock.

I've seen early Ghias without a rear wash-wipe, so I presume it was initially an optional extra across the range. Perhaps Ford thought that it wasn't needed as standard, due to the Sierra's superior drag coefficient?

I'm going to put my neck on the line and say that I quite like it polished. It has cleaned up pretty well.

Yet again, I have to say you've done a great job.

Aye. Fortunately someone has already done the legwork for me on 'Lancaster' plates, so that may well happen in the near future.

That was me when I got DMB to make up some plates for my old 190e.

Just caught up with this thread, excellent work in the Sierra I say.

It's all very well us pontificating from our chairs but you stepped up to the mark from day one and took on the Sierra. Looks like you are doing a grand job keeping it going and working through the issues.

PS I am loving the polished pictures, it deserves it.

Re the Merc, I remember my friends mum had an M reg c180 Automatic in some sort of mid range trim level. It was a very neat looking car and I preferred it immensely to the 190.

Rear wiper was optional on all hatchbacks but standard on all estates until September 1983 when it became standard on all except the base hatchback.

Seems strange to see this car looking shiny!

On very early Sierras, rear wipers were optional even on the Ghia! Pure Ford penny pinching

Imitating the mighty Daimler Benz in allowing folk to exercise their inner mingebag when faced with a page of boxes to tick?

The performance of the car has always been bad, and the throttle response quite poor. This afternoon we coasted to the side of Cambridge's Madingley Road where we remained for over an hour.

Suspect fuel pump total failure or maybe the relay. Either way, something's not happy.

What is it with me and broken green Mercedes?

My dad had a Y reg Base 1.6 Estate. He fitted a rear wiper, from a generic kit he got from the local motor factors.

At some point he also fitted the cheapest nastiest radio, and a rubber aerial on the SIDE of the rear wing (Which he reckons cured the cross wind issues), and one single speaker in the rear hatch. Which he eventually moved to under the dash.  It buzzed a lot but with the engine OFF it was okay.

He did also fit a headphone cable to the rear seat so I could listen in peace.

I's like to think he blutaked a small clock to the top of the dash, but it may be that he didn't.

My Uncle did this with his Victor FE. It was a small square item with a digital display, a bit like a Casio without the strap. Sat on my Cousins windowsill for decades afterwards, it could still be there.

For years I had a Casio watch (minus strap) glued to the top yoke on one of my bikes, I don't even think it claimed to be waterproof but it never failed.

My high school physics teacher had the old and broken school voltmeters and ammeters stuck on the dashboard of his Holden Commodore, he was a very weird and lovely man.

Only on Autoshite could there be a debate about whether or not the base estate Sierra came with a rear wiper. I *heart* this place ATM!

I don't see much on it if I search- what are "econolights"? Some form of vacuum operated gauging light system to show you economical driving?

I'm guessing so because it wasn't available on the diesel...

'digital' vacuum gauge I suspect.

Well, this is proving to be an absolute bloody mystery.

The garage had a good look at it yesterday - the fuel pump is absolutely perfect, and there's plenty of fuel in it.  It's getting from the back to the front, but it doesn't SEEM to be actually injecting fuel.  So the dude is getting the oscilloscope out or something or another later to get a better idea of WTF is going on.  On the phone he was suggesting that it MIGHT be a fuse if it's multipoint injection rather than sequential, but it didn't seem like anything failed like that.  It sort of just withered out.

Cars eh?  Tut.

You broke a Mercedes, do you have any other super powers ?

I'm no mechanic but wouldn't he be best to disconnect an injector to see if fuel is actually coming out?

It'll be that 20p stuck in the handbrake mechanism. It always is.
