Wow, skizzer you are a dedicated shiter, can't wait to see how this turns out.

I can't wait at all, when you get it home, please can I have an invite to come to see it and make brumm, brumm noises while sitting in it. I promise not to frighten your neighbours too much.

Yes, definitely. I can also then pretend it's you again every time I sit in it making brumm brumm noises myself.

I'm going to look at it and pay for it on Thursday, as that's the earliest the seller can do. The plan is to try and get it at least moving, ideally running, ready for collection with a trailer a few days after that.

If I had my own trailer I'd probably take it with me on Thursday. As I'll have to rent one, and I don't know how much time or what kit it'll take to get the car ready, I'm thinking two trips.

I think you under-estimate the fierce power of the British winter to attack the rear end from beneath. Good point about the A posts though.

This is the area that killed most Ranchos, this image is taken from Simcats Vf2 pickup I found on the Web.They can rot underneath the hockey stick shaped channel which connects to the rear suspension pickups. As for getting it running again...pull out the carb jets and blow and clean them through...they always got blocked with crap on these ..connect up a supplementary fuel supply via the manual fuel pump..the tank will be full of crap and will need steaming through if it's anything like some of my old Talbots..and with a good battery it should splutter in to life quite easily.

Thanks Braddon. As this is going to be residing in your neighbourhood, I can see you getting invited round as well. A lot.

Typical A pillar:

Floors are usually not that bad:

Check behind the kick panel!

Floor to inner sill usually rotten:

But as you can see it's not that complicated a repair.

Typical front chassis beam:

Again, those are quite simple shapes.

Not sure why the guy to the left is shooting a hole in the seat:

But I had no idea Jason King had one and that he was scared of dogs.

OMG... Rancho. Friend of mine sold his 3 weeks after he bought it, just no end of misery to be found the more he inspected it.

Be strong, don't give up, good luck!

if you need parts, drop me a line, Talbot scene is well organized over here and secret part vaults do exist... ;)

I saw the post on the eBay thread last night and wanted to comment but was at work where the ancient IE5 was throwing a hissy fit.

Superb purchase, love them from my yoof and I always thought Land Rover had robbed the design with the Disco.

Good luck on getting it fettled.

Now that I've seen her being able to lift a Rancho with one hand, I'm even more scared of her.

I have a Matchbox Superkings Rancho lying about somewhere that I got off someone on here ages ago.

Also, I think I know what people were thinking of re: rear lights:

Not an uncommon shape it seems.

When I first saw a Discovery I thought "Hmm. That's just a Mk 2 Transit grille and lights on a Rancho."

I think the nearest equivalent modern is actually the original Honda HRV.

Just like the Rancho, no one really understood what it was for at the time.

A lottery winners luck to you Skiz.

Just seen this thread, I'd just like to say *swoon*, and that you're virtually assured a place in next year's calendar.

Well played, keep us informed of progress.

I remember these being abandoned on driveways with rust issues in the 80's when they were new, God knows how bad they can get with age.

Yours looks to have survived well

A place?   A PLACE?  Have you looked at the list in his signature?  Hide the modern blob and he IS next year's calendar!

I think that's because the front end is Simca and the back end is Matra.

Factory fitted towbar, there can't be many cars with one of those.

Posted

I remember a neighbour having one of these, it never seemed to get used. Just had a read about them, they were £5670 in 1978! That would have been a shitload of dough, as much as a reasonable 3 bed house.

Hat doffed to the OP and anyone else who has one of these in a state of fix or road worthy, cool as it gets.

We have to wait until THURSDAY?? Noooooo.

Looking forward to the ongoing adventures.....

I've got to confess, that while I was aware of the Matra Rancho's existence, I didn't really know what they were.  Looking at this thread I have come to realise its actually the toy car I spent 90% of my time playing with as a kid, it was my favourite because it was only one of two that had a tow bar, the other being a Jag XJ and the Jag's plastic tow bar had snapped.  I might have to check out my old toy box, because I'm absolutely certain it will still be there.

Top bombing.

I remember the TV Times giving one away in a comp - footage of one at a stately home, fording water etc.

35 years later it's autoshite.

I think more than rot, what did most of them in is their rugged look.

People used them for things they weren't made for.

Would you do this kind of stuff with an ordinary car?

Well yes, you can, but you can't expect it to live long if you do.

IIRC it was even pictured towing a horsebox in the catalogue.

It wouldn't surprise me, if some people actually did that in real life.
