Bangers For BEN – Introdukshon & Collekshon

Recommended Posts

Folks, I’m regular on here, but this is a new ‘id’ more appropriate for a great cause.

Many in the trade will be familiar with Unipart, BEN (Motor Trade Charity) and the now annual B4B Event.

We are ‘in’ and today is Collekshon day, so in time honoured tradition, two collection kits have been assembled.

Kit 1 = A Few Essentials as per foto

Kit 2 = Any support you can find, even a few pence, will be gratefully received. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Unipart-Bangers

Its 99 on the V Plate, needs some belts and the clutch shows the first signs of giving you a whizz, other than that, it’s a minter.

Pez shot to follow later

Have to confess I don't know exactly what you're doing, but good luck with it.

Wacky zany types buy a serviceable older car in a special auction with the proceeds generated to charity.

Charity supports car industry staff and their families.

Car does rally and is sold off again for good causes.

Ah, right. I thought it was WilsonWilson appealing for a not broken car!

Best of luck. Sounds like its a good laugh for a good cause.

It's a Banger Rally, buy a car for peanuts and then run it to somewhere in Europe, sounds like a real hoot

Bangers 4 BEN, buy a car up to a budget of £750 (we've gone for a lot less than that) and run it down to Maranello and Back.

Then give the Car to BEN who auction it off at Blackbushe and keep the proceeds.

Car collection successful and we only used the trade plates.

Anyone guessed what car it is yet ?

here is a clue http://www.speedworksmotorsport.com/

Good luck. I lived across the road from Lynwood house the Ben retirement home for ten years.

One thing they could improve upon as a charity is publicity. They're not widely known, nor do they seem to publicise themselves actively.

Toyota Avensis?

I wish I could use raising money for charity as a ruse to get people to fund my holiday to Italy. [/jks]

LOL, I've been to Maranello a few times and it is good but we would be running B4B wherever it goes.  We are in it to support BEN as we support them in a variety of ways every year and this 'jaunt' has big appeal to the Motor Trade and Industry.

It is indeed a Toyota Avensis, collection Pez shot

Question.

Why not just give the £750 and the money you would spend on money, fuel and accommodation direct to the charity?

Posted

Could do, but folk do sponsored walks, sponsored swims, sky dives..........

Why not an old car drive post-20401-0-51281200-1464294913_thumb.jpg

I think this is great and all that, raising money for a good cause is very noble and never something to be knocked but i can't see the challenge in doing this in something modern like a Avensis, it would make the journey there and back 50 times before you have to even open the bonnet.

Why don't you source something more interesting and older? There's plenty of older stuff about for under £700 which would make the trip memorable.

Such as a gold Audi?

I think he was referring to a Combo van, but got the 'older' bit wrong.

An Avensis?

Really?

It could have been such a fun event too...

I did Bangers for Ben 3 years ago in a Honda Civic. The timing for it are mega tight so I was glad we took something reasonably reliable even though it sounded like all the wheels were going to fall off by the time we got back.  Also a 1.5 vtec Honda Civic is NOT a good long distance cruiser.

No reason at all not to. But sponsored swims, walks don't require that you buy equipment that cost £750 before you take part, don't have an entry fee of £500, don't have fuel costs of £250 quid ish and don't include a nice holiday for the participants. Throw in food and accommodation costs and the price of the fundraising event probably pushes £2000 a team. That's before canvassing for sponsorship.

I know the car is sold off at the end and that it does raise some money for charity but my point is if charity was the primary concern, it might just be better donating all of that outlay money direct to the worthy cause?

I'm all for charity but always look to contribute directly where possible. Less overheads means more money to the cause.

Sure it'll be a great laugh though.

You can generate more money for charity buy sticking it on the taxis on the way down :)

I don't care about the whys or wherefores, hope you raise a few quid and enjoy yourselves in the process.

My boss does this. Used an old 7 Series last couple of outings. He has a proper grenadable weapon this year though.

Is it a Laguna?

Packs far more power and far less confidence. I won't reveal because he'll just like to just rock-up in it I'm sure.

This is a bunch of car people working in the motor trade given the opportunity to get out the office and their 3 month old 520s and do something a bit more exciting. Rightly or wrongly, more money is raised when if there's fun and adventure to be had than just hanging out your cap. Plus a bunch of sign-written cars will advertise the charity and the company involved when they do their jaunt.

Many 'shitters, including myself, are not huge fans of banger rallies but there's little point in ranting on about that.

I'm looking forward to updates on this - after all, the Avensis is a true successor to the incredibly competent yet incredibly dull Toyotas of the 1980s that we all know and love* !

Id be happy with that Toyota for my daily work hack tbh, anyone want to sponsor me to drive it to work and back for a year? Itll probably be quite dull, it might need tyres for some excitement at some point
