RWUK's Commercial Break. Vault o' vans.

Hello everybody. One of the things that I like to do is to go on eBay, bid money on things, and then receive them in the post. This is a terrific hobby as it means I get to open envelopes in front of my work colleages, making it appear that I have contact with actual people in the outside world.

Anyway, most of the things I buy are car brochures. Elsewhere on the internet you will find where I write claptrap about them. Most of them describe cars which transmit on frequencies well outside the Autoshite spectrum, but I thought I'd begin to share some which definitely don't.

I can only imagine what a scintillating experience the "Economy" engined variant must have been, with its 24.4hp.

If there's an appetite for more of this kind of thing, let me know, as I have MOAR. If not I'll let the thread slip silently away.

Brilliant - I grew up with BT HA vans and Dodge/ Commers as dad was a van dealer . More please

Posted

Can I have some more please sir? Had 2 of these as a BT (well. Post Office Telecommunications Board) engineer in the late 70s early 80s and loved them! Happy days.

Another vote for moar ples.

Nice to see you could lease them. Surely that'll never catch on?

Silly question.  More please, unless the rest is all Picassos and Hyundai i30s which I very much doubt.

I like the way that even the brochure-shot Bedford HAs have that slightly sagging front bumper.

I am similarly afflicted obsessed interested in this perfectly rational pastime.

MOAR PLZ THNX M8.

I think the blower motor in my modern probably generates more than 24hp. That must have been truly awful to drive fully laden.

My dad had two ex BT viva ha vans when I was a nipper. I remember the gear stick used to always come away in his hand.

I had exactly the same, although on a Renault Kangoo.

Iirc BT had the slow ones which would run on 2 star but British Gas had the full fat ones

The Cummins Batmobile ice cream vans were hilariously unstable, dead easy to get 2 wheels off the ground

It's nice to see them now, but it must have been shit to be landed with one in 1982, especially if it was detuned. Can you imagine going from one of these to a 305 van? Even a Mk3 Escort would have seemed space age.

I always rather liked how old Bedford brochures showed what seemed to be real vehicles on real plates. I recently bought a Chevanne one for that reason.

However, I'm mildly annoyed that the Co-Op didn't bring the lower paint on the bottom of the door onto the wing - makes it look like it's had a panel replacement and they couldn't be bothered to repaint it properly.

Is that not the sill? The point still stands though, it does look gash.

I can't think of the Bedford HA without thinking of Trevor Chaplin. The 'Beiderbecke Trilogy' was a fantastic series... 8) 8)

I will satisfy it. This should do for now:

mmm, Barbara Flynn.

Anyway, back to the vans - yes please. Panel vans are my favourite sort of vehicle.

And a van question in case anyone here knows: Morris JU250s were sometimes referred to as "Kennex". Anyone know why 'cos it has bugged me for years?

Posted

Kenex was the coachbuilder responsible for "Kenebrake" utility conversions of panel vans - usually involving a metal framed side window and a couple of park benches down each side.   They did J2/JU/J4/CA/Standard Atlas and many others.

Thanks Mercrocker, it was crew bus versions I was thinking of.

Anyone got a brochure?

These are great, I love old vans. Have a Marina van brochure from 1977 to say thanks.

MOAR PLZ. I do like old vans. I used to have the mahoosive dealer poster of the 87 model year Transit 15 seater minibus, along with the Granada 2.4i Ghia, must have been at least A1 sized

Yes. And no vinyl wraps either.

Seems like I wasn't the only one annoyed by the paint treatment on the Co-Op van, as this later one does have the extra bit of paint on the wing:

That last one reminded me that Dodge also used real vehicles in their literature, and I know someone who's recently acquired something in this vein....
