You know when you make an impromptu bid on Ebay?

You know when you tell yourself it was silly but someone will outbid you so it'll be okay?

You know when someone doesn't outbid you?

Yeah. Merde. Old French car that hasn't been on the road for a while bought sight unseen. WCPGW, right?

She's a 1995 XM VSX Turbo (petrol :( ), 127k on the clock and nae MOT. I don't even know if I'm paying a good price or not!

Yum.

VSX - that's pretty much top spec right? No leather, but I can see MANY BUTTONS which probably should do MANY THINGS but from your slightly despondant opener I reckon that the majority is letting the minority down? :-D

Lord only knows at this point, looks like I'll be collecting in the dark to top it off lol.

How many coins did it cost you man!!!

32,000 of her majesties finest pennies... Seller reckons it's a "very good price" and expected more bids. I really have no idea if that's reasonable for what it is.

Posted

Seems a bargain there, is it sitting a bit high or have you been playing with the suspension ?

I haven't touched it, never been in the town it's sat in (it's a bit too close to Kilmarnock for my liking!).

It's no 2CV. ;)

My mate sold his 2.5TD VSX estate for £200 with nae MOT, knowing it needed welding. Needed a drop link and a few other things, but I still call MEGABARG on that, so your price doesn't seem overly strong. Turbo petrol is meant to be pleasant enough too. www.club-xm.co.uk probably handy for you right now.

As much as I would love to own a 2CV I sure as hell wouldn't want a 300 quid one! I can imagine the horrors. So I have a small, tinny Asian car, an XM, a pony tail and glasses. Perhaps a beard and a 2CV are the missing links. Tar muchly for the link.

Just like mine which cost twice as much but had an MOT. Mine had also done very little mileage recently when I got it so if yours is like mine there will be a load of teething problems but once you get through that they seem quite reliable.

If auto change transmission fluid straight away.

Learn from my experience:

If one piece of the exhaust is shot change the whole bloody lot and save yourself no end of grief.

Carry a 5 litre can of LHM for the first year.

If new tyres are needed make sure the bastards tighten the wheel nuts up.

If you are a member of Citroen Car Club go on their website and request list of specialist garages in your area with feedback from other members.

Pull the wiring plugs apart and spray with contact cleaner which may get the leccy window working - it sorted my seat controls.

The filler on the kerbside near windscreen is screenwash, the one on the drivers side is for headlampwash. You won't find this information in the handbook.

Edit/ oh and if your wife drives it tell her to put the bloody seat back where she found it otherwise you will always be banging your knees when you get in.

Thanks for the advice, thankfully it's a manual. The exhaust did have a blow mentioned on it's last MOT but the seller has made no mention of it so we will see if that remains to be a problem. Where can I get the LHM fluid from? I'm guessing dealers don't stock it? Of course the screen and headlamp wash are different bottles, that clearly makes more sense than just one slightly larger bottle.

No wife to worry about!

Oooh, an excelllent buy - and now I get to live life with that MAUNAL XM vicariously - *watches thread with interest*

Where can I get the LHM fluid from?

GSF car parts have a 43% off code this weekend "Easter43", brings each litre bottle down to just under a £5 delivered.

Just got 4 for my Xantia

I'm just down the road if you need any assistance. It belongs to my brother in laws house mate.

It's been sitting for a while but I think it's in decent shape. My brother in law (who's in his early 20's) was amazed an "old" car was so well equipped i.e had electric windows..

That is a thing of beauty and we will be looking back in ten years going 'and you could buy one for hundreds, look at them now you need a mortgage for one'. Last truly great Citroen (but I do have a weird attraction to the cactus).

No, I think you can get away with pretending to be a mid 90s graphics designer who has just treated himself to a new XM with his first paycheck.

This happened a few times when I had the N-reg Sterling some years back. Some young mate of a mate, again in his early 20's, was also amazed at the level of toys (electric windows, electric reclining and heated leather seats etc...) the Sterling came with.

That looks pretty good! Once fettled, I'll happily take it off your hands for a derisory amount of money...

Halfords in Dunfermline had LHM reduced to £3 a litre, I can have a look next time I'm there if you want?

P.S. Well bought!

Halfords is a good shout actually. I think they've been trying to clear their LHM stocks. Malcolm Lockwood usually sells LHM at about £4 a bottle. He doesn't do technology though - 01274 640590 - he also does service items and other bits and bobs.

I forgot to mention that the kerbside one also feeds the rear of the car but doesn't work on mine. It's outlet is higher up the reservoir so that it runs out first, this being your only indication that the level is getting low as there is no warning light.

The little electric pumps are easy to change, generic to most Cit/pug and are cheap on ebay.

Those seats looks stupidly comfy

smoke and mirrors.

Malcolm retired recently Ian.

Can't remember who took over his stock, Chevronics perhaps.

He was very despondent last time I spoke to him.  Business fallen through the floor.

That's handy, thanks for the tip as I almost never look at GSF.

Small world, where abouts are you? You should stick him in a 1963 S-600 Grosser LWB if he thinks an XM is posh and old.

Too bad I don't have a garage! I know what you mean about the Cactus, it's probably the most weird Citroen in a long time.

I guess it's fairly generic stuff then? I was thinking it would be some obscure stuff that only dealers could order.

Posted

It's not that obscure, but you do have to know where to hunt for it. We have been running into issues getting hold of the flushing fluid. Citroen no longer seems to supply it. I'm sure LHM will head the same way at some point, but there are still plenty of cars out there that use it.
