Had a call from an elderly  friend  ( who's not on here), he has his daughters Freelander to dispose of . All i can remember what he said was:  It's dark red , 02 plate , 138k , 5 door  BMW TD4 engineI ,the  radio doesn't work and same with tailgate electric winda .Maybe other things too . Mot until April , but could maybe whizz it down for a new one . Oh ,and its had the 2wd conversion kit and would need the prop and whatever coupling ? to  reinsate 4wd .

Shitters price £750 or so? , or roffle ? He's getting the car from his daughter on Sunday ., so no pics till then !

It's a used Land Rover... it's sold or roffled as it is ,dirt an' all...its not a minter .but it's ok . He said that !!  I've not seen it . Located deepest Sussex . Get home tax .

Not much of a bargain for a 14 y-o 2wd Freelander with minimal MOT and other faults.

i'm guessing that its had the front to back prop shaft taken off cos the transfer box is bolloxed?

when the other half was looking for a cheap 4WD every cheap freelaoder then we looked at was missing the prop to the back axle.

i understand that its the viscous coupling thing that goes on them.

shame as i've driven quiet a few mark 1 ones and i really liked them, when they were working....

good old landrover.

Hmmm, I do know someone after a freelander but I got as far as 2WD... Seriously, who does that?

I never used to like them but that was down to repairing a few and damn near cooking one towing a car trailer, god the petrol ones have no guts,

It was an 04 3 door td4 that came to the rescue when the merc destroyed the dregs of my faith in German cars,

while following it all the way north it barely dropped bellow 70 and pulled the trailer way better than I expected, they seem to make a decent towcar anyway.

Lol "the 2WD conversion" like it's an actual thing people do for a reason other than its expensively fucked

I always laugh when I see these for sale and 'propshaft removed for better economy'

I quite like the little hippo, but you can pick 'em for buttons if they need a bit of repair.

A good reconditioned viscous coupling is only 200 quid, but there is a decent chance the transfer box is kippered, which you wont really know about until you refit the propshaft. A recon transfer box is knocking on for a grand.

I like mine though.

If it had been a KV6 I would said "Gosh", and still not been interested. GLWS.

What proportion of freelanders came as FWD only as standard. I understand that the 4x4 market is dominated by 2 x 4 new sales, as image is most important.

Approximately 0 percent I believe unless they were fucked from the factory

That's not entirely outside the realms of possibility.

...a mate of mine, had one of these, n removed the rear prop - well I did... I seem to remember a Landrover blanking plate he bought after removing the rear prop, n we fitted that, from memory...

....he preferred it FWD 'less snatchy' on tarmac he mentioned- he later bought a crashed one with low miles for its interior (prev owner of his was a dog person)... he sold  both his own good viscous coupling prop, n the one off the breaker - they seem to be in demand as so many have been removed over the years, n some feckless n wreckless folk actually attempt to off-road/green lane them, so need they extra driven rear axle....

Removing the prop seems to be taking away its one redeeming feature other than the diesel limp that's in it

I can confirm that they really do need that rear axle for propulsion, even for the slightest hint of off roading

Bet you can't guess how I know that.

Yeah, 2WD "mod" = someone didn't rotate their tyres or replace all four at once.

Which in fairness, is also what kills Volvo XC, Jeep V8 Grand Cherokee with NV247 transfer case, and all manner of other VC-based AWD cars. I bet the 405 GLx4, BX4x4 and VW transverse syncros would also go for the same reason if they weren't killed off by inherent crapness before the second tyre change.

(When a front CV went on my BX 4x4 I locked the centre diff and drove it home RWD).

The body shop my brother did his apprenticeship at had a S2a 109 Land Rover 1 ton 2.6 straight 6 with a Harvey Frost in the back.

At some point in history the rear prop had been removed , rather than fix it , it was decided just to leave it in hi-ratio 4wd .

I borrowed it many times and it was interesting, to say the least on bumpy roads. The funniest was when I had a Rover 3 litre on the back , I had to pull away from a t-junction on a hill, in the wet with two people jumping on the front bumper.

Add VW 4motion and Sierra 4x4 to that list too.

He sent some pictures . Reconditioned gearbox 18 months ago, the transfer box is ok , apparently the viscous coupling failed.... so the prop was taken off . Going for an Mot  after he gets it home and cleans it .

If the rest of the transmission is ok, they need to invest 200 quid in a new VCU from Bell Engineering and refit it before sale.

Everyone with a buggered one says the box is fine. Selling a 2WD 4WD will always mean it gets a low price, but if its fully working its worth significantly more.

How to make it sound more desirable..

THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAS REALLY LOOKED AFTER THIS CAR BUT ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR DIFF UNIT AS THESE CAN FAIL QUITE REGULAR ON A FREELANDER ,SO HE HAD THIS DISCONNECTED AND THE REAR DRIVESHAFTS REMOVED MAKING THIS 2 WHEEL (FRONT WHEEL) DRIVE. IT DOES NOT AFFECT THE WAY THE CAR DRIVES AS IT DRIVES PERFECT AND IN FACT IS MUCH BETTER ON FUEL AND FOR 99.9 PERCENT OF THE TIME THE CAR NEVER NEEDED OR WILL NEED THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM JUST LIKE ALL OF THE NEW STYLE SUV`S WITH 2 WHEEL DRIVE. IT HAS GOOD TYRES AND IS PRICED UNDER MARKET VALUE TO COMPENSATE FOR BEING 2 WHEEL DRIVE.....VIEWING BY APPOINTMENT ONLY......, £2,495

Ive driven Bobs TD4 ( when it was working) and do like them. But have to agree with the sentiments that if I wanted a jacked up 2WD I would buy a Streetwise or something else Im afraid.
