The Cold Car Clag thread..

Recommended Posts

A big drop in temps up here this week, coupled to some pretty snow today meant I could make a cold start video of the 306.

Thought I'd pap up a thread here with it for a laugh - feel free to post up your own cars or vids you find on the net!

makes a change from the usual train/truck ones- so please keep it car only:)

She took 2 heats, and knocked like an old Cummins before settling down to a claggy idle.

took the visa to work deiced it then went out to it and had to de ice it 5 mins later :D

started 2nd go but lots of steam - looked like it was on fire :D

made work (on a clock) with about 30 secs to spare

Neeeeds new glow plugs! Sounds healthy enough once it settles though.

They're on a list, somewhere;)

I just liked the knocking when it was cold..

That 306 puts my Civic diesel to shame. I snapped a video will upload later if I get chance. It struggled a bit this morning.

205D not particularly thrilled at cold-start requests.  Blingo shrugs (ie. flashes orange piggytail light briefly) and fires up.

RELIABUBBLE.

BX - EUGH! IT'S COLD! I DON'T WANT TO START! chugga chugga chugga.

Panda - Ooh it's a bit chilly. Oh well. Starts as normal.

Mine started at 9am this morning on probably 90% veg, wasn't too bad, might chuck another 20 litres on top for next week (may see what tomorrow morning at 0710 is like first)

Dammit, can someone embed that? Trying to do it via mobile as Plusnet are fucking useless...

You'd be having a whale of a time here in not-so-sunny-Sweden, we got -20 late last week but luckily it's warmed up now, bathing suit weather at -12. I reckon you'd still be cranking em next month...

Glad to see I'm not the only one who does that!

Here's the van, temperature around freezing:

Here's the BX a couple of years ago at -6 °C - the doors had frozen shut! Dreadful filming and you can barely hear the engine :-(

IIRC I did the video after someone on a forum said they were having BX starting troubles, and one of the responses was that they shouldn't expect an old car to start easily in the winter unless you keep it in a heated garage! After reading that I had to prove a point...

Lastly the Focus, when in the Alps a couple of years ago. Would guess the temperature to be around -5 °C or so, possible colder. Again you can barely hear the engine and no clag shot!

I bet my 306 will give your TD a run for the money when it's cold, Neil!

Yeah, an old IDI diesel shouldn't struggle in low temperatures if the glow plugs are healthy, some of the cold diesel cranking videos on youtube make me cringe... I used my 405 TD estate through one of the worst winters I've ever experienced, blending veg oil and petrol, overnight temperatures down to -23C and daytime averages not breaking -10C and it started perfectly throughout.

Great thread. I'd add my derv startup, but it's still like summer* here in Cornwall. Mrs TW a proper perv - I told her about the video and she asked me to show her as she wanted to hear it. She's a keeper.

Great exhaust sound from the mat_the_cat MB - a five potter, I'm guessing? Was waiting for the right foot for the full experience, though...

Similar to LP - started fine every day on veg (used RS) and about 5% petrol, 10% diesel through that cold winter a few years ago, only -18C down here. Wish we had Norway's tax understanding with kero.

"CLAG" in our household is the word we use for the Klingons hanging from the cats arse

Van did the usual ritual of starting when cold, ignition on,light goes out and fires up with a bit of smoke and a slight touch of throttle to even out the idle.

If you want a bit of revving then this is it just after I put a new head on:

Actually a 6 pot, and yes, the exhaust note is part of the appeal :-)

Meant to refer to dome's Merc, not your LT (much as I covet it)

If you're going to do engine work on a 6 pot German diesel, why not: (skip to 12seconds to avoid annoying intro)

Clag, dangleberries or tagnuts aren't words exclusively for cats either:

I had a go this morning!

-7

Nae bother! Even on high veg content

Was a bit smokey on idle though, that cleared after a mile or so

post-5612-0-54076500-1453195898_thumb.jpg

and I had to scrape the inside of the windscreen almost as much as the outside

post-5612-0-84185500-1453195917_thumb.jpg

And 25 miles/40 minutes later at work it hadn't melted the frost on the bonnet.

Both footwells that are usually wet are frozen solid though atm!

Good effort Beko- sounds a lot less dieselly knocky than mine.

I reckon some new glowplugs are in order for the 306

If only the 18's timing belt hadn't snapped, I would have wowed you all with the clattery blue haze.

Mine had them not long before I bought it apparently, even the (I quote) "Bastard one", so I presume the seller didn't lie!
