The 205 is dead, LYVE COLLECSHUN FRED - FAIL TO PROCEED

I don't think there's any argument from EC about the sensibilities of driving blind so perhaps we all need to just stop reminding him ;)

We also don't know whether it was the police or a concerned member of the public that put the cone there, if there's lots of trees down maybe the police were having trouble marking all the roads with the limited number of obstacles they carry.

Anyway, EC is alive, there's talk of a 205 with a mental engine, someone's got some free firewood and we've probably got a calendar shot. Happy days all round.

If the cone placer cant be proven, which it wont be, who pays out? The poor tree? Wont someone think of the trees!

Pistonheads is that way... Compo indeed, do you want poor e c to be bombarded with stupid accident phonecalls for all eternity?

You pulling the engine and other good bits from the 205 before it joins the rest in your graveyard field?

Dead 205TD!

The vultures are circling overhead, how’s the TD engine/gearbox, are you interested in selling it, how about fitting it for me to a non turbo Visa Diesel?

If I may be permitted to jump onto this train, are the wheels still round and 14"?

Chompy filled me in on this while my internet was crap.  Now I've got slightly better internet and can see the pictures for myself I'm astonished that Will not only walked, but drove away from that accident.  Relieved too.  Just take it easy for a bit, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up covered in bruises in the near future after that.

Well it seems a bit shit that plod used a poxy cone and not a road closed sign.

Compo culture surely on exists because of incidents like this.

EC is a knob for driving without proper vision, though we were all daft when we were his age weren't we?

Perhaps the cone was all the Plod had in the back of their car, it's not unimaginable.

The one thing I think any replacement motor needs is a functioning heater!  I've had the no-heater no-vision thing, in my fiat 126 - being air-cooled, the hot air was meant to come forwards from the rear engine up a tunnel to the car and the windscreen vents.  On mine there was no thermostat (didn't know this at the time), and the air wouldn't come up through the vents but did exit via the gearstick gaitor. That morning was so cold I was wearing a woolly hat, quilted jacket (that I still use int' garage!) and gloves, and on the third time the screeen froze over I poured neat de-icer onto the screen (in the days when de-icer came in a trigger pack) and drove off up the road with this blue liquid over the screen, but at least I could see through it.

Fuck me, if it only went and started freezing across the screen with the windchill!!!  I ended up with an 8-inch-square lump of blue ice crystals blocking my vision, so stopped at the next available point.  By this point, I was in sunlight and the screen unfroze, and somehow it didn't freeze over again and allowed me to continue.

Wow. How the hell did you walk away from that, Will? You lucky, lucky bugger.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help in getting you mobile again.

Fair do's to cabbage Will for 'fessing up to the icy windscreen. Even with a clear screen, seeing a dark log hovering four feet above an unlit, narrow, hedge lined road in the dark at normal driving speed would take some doing. It's not like you would be expecting it.

I was once nearly caught out by a farmer crossing the road from field to farm entrance while towing a long bale trailer. The trailer had no lights and was straddling the road. I saw the tractor and figured out what was going on just in the nick.

Ye-ouch! That could have been a whole lot worse!

Looking at the other trees in the picture with the 5-0 in it, the responsibility of maintenance of the tree will lie with the landowner - the Highway responsibility will be from feature to feature, and in this case that'll probably be where the vegetation ends. The landowner may be liable to clear up costs if they were incurred by the Highways maintenance team, but as it appears to have been sorted before that happened, they'll probably be alright.

Thanks guys. I'm okay, buy very sore today.

Thanks for looking out for me and spotting new cars, you lot are really helpful.

As Danny said I am taking ownership of his 205, on Wednesday.

Hopefully I'll make it home. Wish me luck!

Will, thank feck you're alive and not needing structural repairs... Further proof an MGF is far safer than a Landie! Can't you weld in some reinforced A posts and turn it into a CJ? Will have a better squint at those pics when on the laptop.

It looks like it's a bit bent in the middle.

Essentially, yeah, all the above. Manual boost kontroller, grind the boost pin with an angle grinder, shim the governor and wind the fuel in.

Bigger turbos kan take more fuel without the inherent problem XUDs face, smoking  like fuk when tuned/ overfuelled.

I use second hand interkoolers  (sorry keyboard broken) from the skrappy (have you worked out whikh button is broken yet?)

Often from Mondeos or Jags. Many turbos are available for not a lot of money, I have used ones from an Impreza, audi 2.5 V6 TDI, Meredes 220  and have one on the shelf from a Meredes ML270.

Its not a lot of work to weld them to the manifold and sort an exhaust elbow out , kontrolling the VNT ones is a bit more hassle though.

This is worthy of a thread if you kan be arsed. :-D

I have a few threads to make but my interweb is off till Thursday I think, I only have my phone at the moment.

Was at my mum's on the weekend so managed to use her interweb to keep up.

I will make a thread on it then. Wasn't going to coz I didn't think you lot were into mods essentially, although it seems a fair few run XUDs so may be relevant.

Oy vey Will!  I can't tell you how glad I am you were able to tell us all about it.  This month has seen off more than a fair share of AS steeds.  Looking at those pics, I never imagined you'd actually been in the car until I read your words.  You take it a bit easy, ok?

Today me and my younger brother, chavinthecorner, went and collected the tree that downed the mighty 205. It will be burnt in homage to my trusty steed of 3 years.

On the way there and back I had my first real lessons in piloting the old John Deere, a skill that will provide useful in the future.

And I also found the post that PC Plod posted on Twitter, no wonder the word got out so quick!

Having found my next killer weapon in the shape of Arthur Foxhake's 205 TD, and having worked out how to post pictures from my phone, I am about to attempt my first live chod collection thread, and its going to be an over-nighter!

First stop, sneaky midnight pint of Tetleys and a imminent Megabus booking!

The police being cuntish?

Surely not. The social media presence of every police force seems to be concerned with everything but detecting crime and arresting criminals as far as my experience extends. Perhaps because it's cheaper than conducting police work.

Look out rapist, murderers and child molesters.

Just sayin.

That Twitter post seems a bit cuntish to me considering it was posted by the police.

Also doesn't mention that he got out alive and uninjured, looks like the copper is glad he's hurt/dead if you don't know the full story!

I made the mistake of posting the fact I span the Dolomite 1850HL off the road on a wet roundabout (3 weeks after purchase, I was utterly gutted) on certain places online and the resulting comments resulted in me having a bit of a mental breakdown. Was told I could have killed somebody, was taking it too lightly, couldn't be trusted behind the wheel, wasn't maintaining the car properly, etc.

Came quite close to quitting my job and ditching the whole driving thing entirely. Wished I'd done it at speed on a country road and done the decent thing and wiped myself out for the longest time.

"could of". No need for the moral outrage tweet, why not use it to warn other drivers about driving in freezing conditions with a low winter sun?

Some of the roadside trees in the UK are in a really bad way, not sure why more isn't being done about it except on trunk roads.
