Autoshambles - NEC?

Recommended Posts

For the record I think "Auto Unexceptional" is good tongue-in-cheek name for public consumption.. Especially when you find out the real name later. Somebody grab that domain for redirects.

Posted

Was Auto Excretia not our socially acceptable name?

I'm more concerned about the extra costs involved in buying new dealer stickers.

I'm miles away but would be willing to help out.

Posted

Ah that's good news on stand costs.

I think the cars on the stand need to be ones not on any others. Were there any Tagora's there this year? You need one of those if possible!

Posted

The site name really is a stumbling block, but if a suitable work-around can be found it would certainly be a lot of fun.

I nominate explosive-cabbage's veg-powered Pug 205 as an ideal stand candidate :-)

Posted

Same font and colours at the website banner but just drop the "h" - Autosite sounds bland enough but close enough to the real thing.

Posted

Could be have some live demos? Like how to apply wob with a trowel and the careful application of ducktape to a MK1 Mondeo bumper?

Posted

Surely the ideal live demo would be Will's Samara or JohnF's Maserati. Or a combined John Bollox Maserati-off.

Either that or we could have a Picasso and invite the public to out JohnF it with an axe.

Posted

Council estate? Certainly one of the Autoshite bikes should be present with a list of forum owners or something.

More than happy to help as long as it doesn't involve speaking to the public.

Posted

Is there a live arena, for A-framing demonstrations ?

I'm sure many people have never seen the underside of Toyota PleasureDome.

Needs an ebay tat wall, where submissions can be made by pinning-up printouts from a budget PC running Windows 98.

This will need another pc next to it, printing off the relevant Mot histories ..

The general public would be horrified at the present state of my Maserati. As am I :-(

You know, that sounds like a cunning plan that might just work.

Personally, I think we should have the whole Autoshite thing, really promote it, then get the Bentley, Rolls Royces, Maseratis and Jaguars, all wear cravats and red trousers, and look snootily at anyone who asks if we've got a Tagora.

Then dash into the back of the stand, grab a pastie, and stroke a Daewoo Espero going "My precious, my precious, not for the likes of them..."

Autos*ite is a nice way of 'cleaning' up the name without losing the origin.

No doubt we will all have our thoughts on what should/shouldn't be there but I would be considering the following to be different from other stands:

Displayed cars 20 to 35 years old

Displayed cars to be non-sports versions (newer cars on display at the NEC tend to all be the performance special editions)

Show cars that are not on other stands which may mean seeing whom are the other display groups before deciding the final selection

Active demonstration of car maintenance in some form even if a fake, lets replace bits that don't need it.

Samples of old oil / coolant / brake pads / etc to show new old difference

To keep it manageable I would think that

3 or 4 cars maximum on display

Picture wall of Shitefest and other events

stops us from trying to do too much at a first attempt

To be radical, buy a local piece of chod and fix it up for an MoT over the weekend.

Joe public gets to buy raffle tickets for post MoT'd chod.

As posted in other thread I can provide free accommodation for some, I have one spare room and loads of floor space

Can do group breakfast and there are loads of places to eat nearby for evening meals, or get a mass Curry/Chinese delivery

I am about 25 mins away from the NEC

You can have my "garage find" Escort,it needs the discs, pads and rear calipers doing lol 😉

What is the aim of the stand? If it is to promote the site then surely will have to have the name otherwise it wont raise awareness as it is intrinsically linked to the web address.

If on the other hand it is just so we can have a good day out then it doesnt really matter what we are called.  In which case I think it should be the Sherpa Coupe Owners Club...

Demonstrations can be

12 pm - All aboard the Pleasure Wagon - Punters get to sit in the pleasure wagon and then gently rocked to sleep by the AS massive

1pm - Ramblings from Ramrod -Eddy unveils his new novel

2pm -The Custard hour - A selection of yellow vehicles which are shown whilst an RichardK sits in the drivers seat eating a tin of birds custard

3pm - Peepipoo off - Breadvan takes on all comers in a legal ring of death match, winner is last man standing with a valid point

4pm- Champagne Motoring for mild bitter money -  A symbolic art installation of the collected rust droppings of the expensive cars on here - ideally in a dustpan

5pm - Food from around the Isles - Strange shape foodie goodness is offered to the public at a knock down price if they can identify its origins. May including baked products

6pm - My Lucky Charms - Bub is adorned with as many lucky charms as we can find including cloverleaves, rabbits feet etc and then made to do simple tasks to improve his luck

7pm - Grand Finale - Fleet Reduction in action- The AS Massive hold an open forum around the controversial topic of fleet reduction in action.

Sub working groups will include What is the optimum number of cars to stand a chance of one working, Anything made since 1986 is unnecessary to motoring enjoyment, MOT number plate rules keep the world safe and whether the site is 1)shit, 2)better than it was, 3)never been as good as it is,  D)Other

I think it would be more entertaining having an autoshite stand at the restoration show.

Demonstrations on how to make the perfect underseal tidemark, fibreglass, your structural friend, dealing with pogweasel,OMGHGF,how to spend a lot of time trying to avoid fixing the actual problem, etc etc

Posted

Not sure the NEC look kindly on club stands doing work on the cars. When we had an allegro there in 2012 they were very keen on keeping oil of the floor etc. DW might have more up to date information on club stands.

I'd suggest a roffle type solution to pick the cars, otherwise arguments on who are inevitable.

And the first punter to spot his car on there and complain that we are taking the piss out of him...

Are we actually a club, then? Do we have the same status? gen question, can I say yes when my insurance company ask me and quote code "Autos*ite101" to get a discount?

This had me laughing my ass off, we should def do it!

also love the idea of buying a old car the day before at Cannock motor auctions for less than say £300 quid and roffoling it off for 10 quid a ticket. instant profit! venue paid for.

lol... you know full well that any shiters attending the show would end up leaving with more cars than they came with, and a pocketful of virtual roffle tickets that may increase it still further. That's the way it works.

Working on cars is fine as long as you cover it in the risk assessment and avoid spilled fluids. 2CVGB once did a chassis swap over the weekend. When it was still a two day show! We did a cylinder head swap on my 2CV in 2007.

Resto show is a possibility, but I'd have to encourage others to take on the stand. I'm committed to helping with the 2CVGB stand for that one. In my dreams, I'll have a new body for my 2CV by then but as it's in March, I somehow doubt this very much!

There should be an empty space on the stand to represent the car that didnt make it.

Could one of our beavertail owning members have a spot with a broken car on the back of their wagon?
Posted

Hey, I'm up for this too. The 820E should be on the road by then.

No spilt fluids be fine with my vectra, the bloody coolant and oil is scattered between the dales and Heanor
