Due to radiator related issues, I can't drive my chosen winter car. I'm driving someone else's omega at the moment and although it's nice I will soon have to give it back. This means having another car ready, and it isn't going to be the scorpio unless a suitable rad presents itself soon.

I therefore have a choice. Three people have offered to sell or give me cars, but I don't know which is going to be the right choice. Exciting eh? It's like a 70's game show with fucked up old cars instead of darts or oversized playing cards.

So, behind door number one...

1998 Honda Accord 2.0 - Mostly silver but with gold bonnet and bumper thanks to a small incident last year. 200,000 miles, MoT expired and won't drive due to failed clutch master cylinder. I also know it's rusty underneath and the fuel pipes are shot. It does have good tyres though. Asking £100.

Next up

1997 Peugeot 106 5 door 1.1 - Also needs testing but at least is all one colour. Shame it's green, but you can't have everything, and on this car you also can't have good tyres or gear linkages that stay attached to the gearbox. Currently in use as a shed, and showing almost 160,000 on the clock. £70 or near offer.

And finally..

Someone just offered to give me a 2001 Renault Laguna for free. Tested until next year (by me, apparantly...) but suffering from total electrical failure meaning he just bought another car and it needs moving from the car park at work ASAP.

What would you do?

Accord, very easily - but then I hate Peugeot 106s and an electric-dead Laguna just sounds like situation normal.

The Accord sounds like scrap fodder, could you get it cheaper? That'd be my choice too for hassle-free winter motoring, my mum's 02 Accord has never failed to proceed in 3 or 4 highland winters.

Buy a stout pair of shoes.

Accord IS scrap fodder, but he just paid several hundred for new tyres before the clutch went, hence the £100.

None of them, but the Laguna t a push (and you probably will be doing that) assuming you can fix it for nowt.

A Pug 106 is great if you have size 6 feet or smaller, and like off-set steering wheels. Also, at that mileage I suspect the seat mountings are either preparing to bid the floor goodbye, or already have and the PO has had a P38 party.

Laguna is free, which is cheaper than the others.  Total electrical failure sounds like a really quick and easy fix.  SHITIST'S CHOICE

If the Laguna can be resurrected, then it will be a far nicer place to sit in than the other two.

Surely total electric failure is the easy electric failure to fix as it is either main earthing, fuse, battery or alternator issues. My first bet would be a dying battery.

If one thing worked an another didn't then you have far more potential for hunt the bad wire.

Id take the free Lag & lob a battery on it to see what sparks into life.

Do these things have a main fuse? I know some do, possibly designed to protect the electronics in the event of a straight short.

You're a professional spannerist, aren't you?  Grab the Laguna.  In your place I'd have no hesitation.

Scorpio Rad

Or - pull rad of laguna, make ome hoses up, cable tie in place and voila - Scorpio lives again

Couldn't be water ingress causing Laguna misery?

Accord seems the least worst of the three so probably the best choice but none are fantastic prospects.

Posted

What a choice! Woukd you not be better finding something cheap on here from a fellow shiter like the zx that was advertised?

Posted

I'd buy a rad. The other options sound like money pits. Laguna with electrical issues would scare me

Posted

1 Wait until Saturday evening

2 Consume a few jars

3 Log on to Ebay

Isn't this the required AS method of acquiring new personal transportation?

Posted

What you need is a £75 MGF off ebay

I'd take laguna. Shit comes to bust you can't lose. Then buy both the others as a precautionary measure. Win win

+1 it's FREE!!!!!!

Another vote for getting the rad on the frog sorted. Surely can be recored for not a lot?

Other options are scrappers and will probably need constant fettling..........ok for a hobby car but shit if you just want transport

Posted

Taff, I've already got a MG(T)F - It's no use because the missus can't get in or out of it and her wheelchair won't fit in the boot (either end)

Radiator people - £250+vat for a recore. No other options (the one I found leaked)

I just need something with wheels and doors as a stopgap, and as cheap as possible. Expect laguna soon.

Selfishly the Laguna is the one I want you to get so I can see someone who knows what they're doing coax it back to life .

The only thing that trumps a free car is a free working car, with a tank full of fuel.
