SL's fleet news - New LS400 arrived (update 14-02-2026)

I'm blaming @wuvvum for this one.

Before I went on holiday last month I found myself obtaining insurance quotes and purchasing advance, one-way rail tickets, which can mean only one thing - a collection mission was being planned. Last night the time finally came around to undertake the deed.

Entertainment was assembled:

A taxi was hailed:

Thanks to Miss SL for the lift to the station.

Old-ish cars were seen:

Titty duck leads the way. Her name would be clear when seen from the front.

A train was caught:

Read about the quality motors available in August 1996:

Descended into the underworld for the next leg, Liverpool Street to Bank:

Then the comedically simple Waterloo and City Line:

Spent some time messily eating a burrito, wondering why this AA ad portrays the trashing of what appears to be an LS400:

Cromer from mine would take almost half the time it took to drive back from Hampshire last night....

Big tunnel on the A3:

Fuel for driver and passenger, Master SL came along:

Was recently listed here by @Alan Prost and it not having worked out with that pov-spec Carina E 4dr I thought this would be an interesting alternative. Always wanted to try a 2-litre version after we had a 1.8 as family transport for some years, purchased almost 20 years ago after the birth of Miss SL, and particularly so after driving the Avensis SR which is now her daily driver. This all makes me feel quite old....

Busy with chores right now, will write more and add today's photos later. Suffice to say the drive home was as uneventful as could be hoped and I think it's got the basis of being A Very Good Car.

Many thanks to Lee for such an easy purchase and for letting me take four weeks to pick it up.

Not sure need is the correct word there, but it could be a useful thing.

I just wasn't quick enough on the first one, it was £600 locally on FB and by the time I'd got in touch someone had already viewed and paid a deposit. Although the one I now have is probably the better car, it's more useful, better equipped and lower mileage.

GLi is the highest spec available on the estate, and the original owner really pushed the boat out with metallic paint, auto 'box and the air-con (apparently a dealer-fit extra).

Car didn't like it, of course. Their summary of it in that August '96 issue:

IMG_7862.thumb.JPG.2370c1dd334d2df71e2a6019e5198bf2.JPG

As they've also included the Camry in this list they were clearly stupid. Ditto the 940?

For completeness, here's our previous one, a 1.8 CD:

1996 Toyota Carina E 1.8CD

Bought in 2003 as it was massively roomier than the previous Mazda 323F, then passed to father-in-law around 2010-11. He kept it until 2017 and it then got broken/exported.

After reading Car religiously from the age of 11 I made many costly mistakes buying terrible money pits because I remembered favourable Giant Test results. A Renault 17 Gordini, Lancia Beta Coupe and a GSA spring to mind all were theoretically superior to the Cortinas, Capris and even Zodiacs and Granadas that I inevitably went back that actually functioned as transport to work  in between the Setright, Nichollls, Fraser recommended Furriners.

Excellent!  How are the auto 'boxes on these?  I've never sampled one, but they are the type of car that would suit being automatic for an even less stressful driving experience.

Feels a bit old-fashioned, like how I remember it was on the F-reg Bluebird auto I had. With the LS400 and RX I'm used to very smooth 'boxes, so maybe it's not a fair comparison. Might be that it needs a bit of a fluid change?

Nicely geared with the overdrive, less than 3000rpm at 70.

Probably too late to call on this in the event of any problem.

I dug out a 1996 brochure and hoped to find a name for this fabric style, but sadly they just list it as being grey. It's worn its 128k miles and 27 years pretty well, the bolsters look fine and it's pretty clean and free of damage.

IMG_7896.thumb.JPG.beb14b028dae3878ad5dff8e587e53e2.JPG

Nice touch here - the wash/wipe function on the stalk appears to have packed up and it's been replaced by this switch.

Tailgate handle has the same issue as on the Camry estate, in that it seems to have lost whatever spring action returns it to its position and it needs manually pushing back.

IMG_7891.thumb.JPG.7bb3aa91b9b8d8d755c92e1c43077858.JPG

Sunroof tilts and slides as it should. Front screen may well be the original, there's no rot around it. Roof rails are handy to have, they cost a lot for the RX.

Where it was purchased new, it looks like Honda are now sold there: https://goo.gl/maps/3GyuxLKf6eFrg8GH8

Boot large and deep, probably not much smaller than the RX although I doubt it could take as much weight. Doesn't look to have been abused as a loadlugger.

1996 Toyota Carina E 2.0 GLi Estate Auto

125bhp and 129lb/ft torque from this version of the engine also used in RAV4, MR2, Celica and as a 2.2 in the Camry. Oddly it's listed with slightly reduced torque in the auto compared to the manual, which was 135lb/ft. If the sticker is to be believed then it had a cam belt change along with water pump, idler etc a couple or so years ago at 112k miles, so that doesn't need worrying about.

No immediately obvious reason why it's had a kill switch fitted. Rubber seal has since been placed back where it should be.

One thing we noticed looking at it today was a hairline split in the plastic top of the radiator, with a little bit coolant just visible around it. Didn't appear to have lost very much coolant on the motorway journey home of 3+ hours, and a replacement rad looks to be straightforward to fit and easy/cheap enough to obtain - parts availability will hopefully be a benefit of it over the Camry and LS400.

For the sake of comparison, here's the Avensis engine bay:

1999 Toyota Avensis 2.0 SR

All very similar, but has coil pack ignition and the washer fluid bottle is tucked down below the inner wing.

MoT is due in a couple of months. I'll use it for local running around and get it to the garage for a pre-test checkover. Front end has a bit of a clonk and I reckon a full set of tyres would make a significant improvement to its ride quality and road noise - Uniroyal RainExperts seem to do a good job on the Avensis.

I hope I'm not being overly optimistic, but it seems to me that there's the basis of a very decent car here. The tidy interior and lack of rot in nasty places along with lots of paperwork and history would justify some paintwork on the lower half to really smarten it up in a way that I could never contemplate with the LS400.

Tail gate latch is all good, it’s out of sync with the manual locking of the drivers door, ie it’s had a key in it..

Kill switch will probably have been placed there either as an inexpensive additional antitheft measure, or a simpler/quicker way of disconnecting the battery when the car’s not in use for a period. In the latter instance sometimes needed if there’s an untraceable fault causing the battery to discharge more quickly than it should.

But hopefully not in your case!

Those seats are special 😍

Japanese stuff of this era was probably the peak of automotive design, just the right balance between modern features/reliability whilst not being too complex.

Comfy too. And agreed on the latter point.

Show attendance today, at one of the enjoyable East Coast Japanese Sunday meets. Self and daughter's BF took these:

IMG_8012small.thumb.jpg.8738f0e2cd66a1fc228c79c6ea8afd2c.jpg

Avensis would have been there too but Miss SL is using it for a camping trip this weekend.

Now got less than 700 miles to the Laurel's big 100k, not sure if I'll make it this year but it was an enjoyable thing to drive today. Suprisingly good fun on country roads, cruising is a bit of a drudge as it's not especially quiet (low gearing, wind noise).

Should have taken the Carina, but want to to get the radiator replaced before I go too far. Pity I didn't, as I could have compared it with this one:

IMG_8046small.thumb.jpg.68c720c0b7c4c5fa8e10f612df1c5d83.jpg

@wuvvum and maybe one or two others will remember this from the eBay thread a couple or so months ago. I attempted to buy it when it came up for sale locally on FB but I missed out. Great to see it's still around, not scrapped or raced (it was only £600). Had a pleasant chat with the young lad who owns it, he says he's been using it as a daily and it's doing a great job for him. Low-spec with manual windows and the 1.6 engine. On balance I prefer what I've got, as I already have two 3-box saloons and the practicality of an estate is useful plus it's nice to have the toys and bigger Camry-type engine along with the lower mileage, but good to know the saloon went to an enthusiastic owner.

One feature I've found on my Carina, but haven't been able to make use of yet, is a wiper heater function. It appears it still has the original 'screen and today I noticed thin elements at the bottom. RX has something similar, didn't realise Toyota were offering it back in the '90s.

It's going to be dropped off at the garage tomorrow evening for a pre-MoT check and radiator replacement. Fingers crossed I have it back in time for ECR's evening meet at Shotley.

LS400 used for work today, after driving the Laurel then Carina over the previous couple of days its smoothness is still a revelation. Even against the RX it still acquits itself very well, and the ride is certainly better.

Garage's pre-MoT verdict came through on the Carina, overall pretty good. No rust on the body or subframe etc to worry about. For the October MoT it'll need front brake flexis, a rear ARB link (presumably the cause of the clonking sound) and a bit of a repair to the headlight adjustment, and I forgot to tell them about the comedy screenwash switch. May as well get them done now so it should be a straightforward pass, and I'm 'voluntarily' getting the rad replaced along with a set of new tyres and plug leads. It can have an oil and filter change when it goes back in for the MoT, maybe a look at the A/C too.

Once I get the mechanical side of things sorted then it's a question of how far do I go with the the paint and bodywork? An important thing I discovered on a damp morning was that all the HRW elements work. To me that makes it feel like the forthcoming expenditure will be worthwhile.........

Was digging around in its copious history file today. First owner in leafy Ripley, Woking had it from new to late 2011. He was going to part-exchange a 1987 Astra against it, for which they'd have given him £1747.26 in 1996, but he must have found a home for it elsewhere as they crossed that out and he paid the balance in full (no record of finance from the garage).

Then went to a chap in Haywards Heath, with around 76k on the clock at 15 years old. By the power of Streetview, here it is approaching its 20th birthday in 2016:

image.thumb.png.9308421f34455653cae30c2525d4af0a.png

Neatly kept, just the sort of place where you'd have hoped/expected to have  seen it. Still had the original wheeltrims back then. Amongst the paperwork there's a little calculation of his annual mileage, with a note saying how much it had gone down to after retirement. Looking at the MoT/service history I can imagine the same happened with its first owner, and I quite fancy that little bit of history repeating itself - I'd happily enter retirement with it still on my fleet and it would feel utterly appropriate to do so.

Sometime in 2018-19 it then moves onto its 3rd owner, who looks to have lived down Chichester way going by the paperwork. Mileage was around 96k at that point. He kept it for about four years, doing around 7k between MoTs, and it then went to @Alan Prost in March of this year with circa 126k on it.

My geographical knowledge of that area isn't great, but it looks to have moved in a clockwise direction around Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire before breaking out of its orbit and heading to the wilds of East Anglia.

Carina back home again from visit #1 to the garage. It's got to go back for the tyres, but so far they've done the rad, replaced plug leads and distributor cap, replaced a couple of brake flexis and cleaned up the rear pipes, and fitted a new rear ARB link. Latter doesn't quite seem to have got rid of the clonking noise, wonder if the exhaust isn't fitted as it should be? I'm sure it's a touch louder than it ought to be. They can have another look when it goes back for the tyres. Definitely running better with the leads and cap changed.

Haven't got a bill yet, but with the tyres done I reckon it won't be far off the original £1,000 I paid for it. For £2k I've got something tidy, comfortable and practical, hopefully reliable and I personally think quite distinctive looking. Cam belt and water pump were already done, so that should be all of the major things dealt with. If I can get the air-con sorted and then some paintwork done I think it should be Very Nice Indeed, for 95% of my driving all the car I need.

Mine is higher mileage, but I think it compares favourably with the £3,199 example that the eBay seller in Bradford wants for a similar estate: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/385972860553 I can see that also has some dinks on the bodywork, and it doesn't have AC.

Honourable mention to the Yaris, now with Master SL and mileage starting to rack up since he passed his test. Was used to good effect last night, dropping Miss SL off at a party then me at the garage.

1990s Toyota boot sale action:

Avensis SR was pressed into service on the stall, I just visited later on. Carina E seemed right for that kind of trip, and I was keen to see how it drove on the new tyres and with the noises sorted. They found some play in the front ARB links, and it's much better now they've been replaced. Full set of Falkens were fitted - in hindsight I wish I'd waited for the Uniroyals but they were on a longer delivery time. They're the proper 185 width, but look a bit skinny on the rims.

Was a very enjoyable drive, it goes well and is smooth and comfortable - definitely something where I want to sort that final 5% and get it running just right. Also a good test for the new radiator today, it sat perfectly at halfway all day.

Still has a very slight misfire under light throttle, although it seems less noticeable when it's really, properly warmed-up. Hasn't yet had a full service,so we'll see if it's still evident after that.

IMG_8330.thumb.JPG.aa7e49125f8c91e6b533074c7af47676.JPG

288 miles since I filled up at South Mimms on the collection night. Worked it out at around 32mpg, which isn't bad for a 2-litre auto seeing as it hasn't had many decent runs since getting it home and it's spent time in and out of the garage. I don't think I ever got much better than 33-34 out of the Camry 2.2, and that was a manual.

It's funny, I can think back to the mid '90s and imagine who would have bought or chosen a car like this. I then realised that I have many of the characteristics that person would have had, age and stage in their working life certainly being amongst them....

Just over a year since the last update?!

1990s Assortment

The Carina E went through an MoT in October, looks like I need to get it booked in for another one soon. It continues to do its thing very capably, mileage now over 130k. Vaguely contemplating selling it at some point to get a Celica that I can share with Master SL for a bit of trackday stuff, but unforeseen expenditure on the RX daily driver has put that on hold for the moment.

LS400 is still here too (don't appear to have any recent photos). Was somewhat neglected after it passed its MoT back in April, but recently cleaned the worst of the mould and moss off it and took it to a couple of local meets plus occasional trips to work and dad's taxi duties which somehow continue despite both of mine now driving. Its smoothness continues to amaze me, even at 166-odd thousand miles. Really must think about a cam belt change, as at least I'll have a decent engine should suspension/rust issues create a significant MoT failure someday. There are a few LS400s locally (including the pair owned by Miss SL's BF) but mine appears to be the only Mk1 model on its tiddly 15" wheels and 205 wide tyres.

IMG_4019small.jpg.68f35d566c4778014ec61cbe944ef083.jpg

Then the Laurel. Even though it doesn't need one I put it through an MoT earlier this year and have used it every so often since then. This included a commute to head office on Friday (105-mile round trip) and a sunny Saturday afternoon drive to Southwold for fish and chips yesterday, when this significant moment happened en-route:

44 years since all the 0s were last seen, and that would have been in a factory somewhere in Japan.

I've had it for approaching 16 years now, nearly double the longest I've owned anything else, and have done nearly 24,000 miles in that time.

Within the extended family fleet Master SL's Mk1 Yaris continues to give good service, now being used for his commute since starting work. The ex- @BorniteIdentity Avensis SR was in daily use by Miss SL until very recently, its mileage now well over 286k. I think it's going to have a temporary rest when she goes back to uni, but may go up there for winter driving duties. Her BF still has his Mk2 MR2, now on some attractive JDM aftermarket alloys, plus the pair of LS400s mentioned above.

Yup, late 2008 when we went down to East Grinstead to collect it. Can't immediately remember if we took my Bluebird or the original Camry estate. I think possibly the former, as I believe we used the Camry to go and get a 3-door Accord from Crawley a year or so beforehand.

A very rare thing, but I attempted some mendage. Driver's door handle and ability to unlock the Carina E had FTPed - it was fine one day, then not functioning the next. For a short while I put up with unlocking and getting in from the passenger side, but that wasn't a good long-term solution (especially if I parked too close to something on the LH side). MoT is booked for mid-October and I'm not sure what the tester would think about it?

In yesterday's sunshine I thought I'd better attempt to do something about it, so this happened:

IMG_4192.JPG.560571ff62afbce9954d12e6cb4cbaba.JPG

I was hoping to take the panel off and find something obvious like a rod that had become disconnected, but of course that wasn't the case and the handle/lock mechanism is well hidden behind the metalwork and window guide, so I had to dig deeper and extract it all:

IMG_4194.JPG.7851fe06046907073dae007c355ffc0a.JPG

I have no knowledge as to how this is meant to work, but luckily a broken spring made itself evident. Could that be it?

I was pondering how to get hold of one and wondering how long it would take to get to me when it eventually clicked that some sort of universal expansion spring would do the job. The local Screwfix luckily had one multipack in stock, so Master SL got that for me.

IMG_4196.JPG.c3351f8e0894ea58ddccd17b427c3432.JPG

Not desperately easy to get it fitted, and it's less meaty than the old one, but I now know what I've got to fix next time and maybe I'll get a better one in stock. Or I have another seven of them in the multipack (and many, many others).

Did it work? Yes! Unlocking is not quite as positive, presumably due to the weaker spring, but I can now open it up and get in using the driver's door so it feels a bit more like a 'proper' car again. Should maybe try chucking a new battery into the remote fob as well.

A couple of things I noticed as I was doing it. First that there was no rot inside the door, and second that someone looked to have been in there before. I suspect this would have been to replace the window regulator, something of a TADTS issue on the Carina E (and I vaguely recall mention of one being done in its fairly extensive history).

Update time, and this photo from as recently as August 2023 is a handy starting point. Every one of them has now gone from the driveway, all to fellow AS members in 2025. And I think everyone concerned is still talking to me?.....

Carina E went to @Angrydicky's friend and as far as I know is providing him with functional everyday transport after his bad experience with a modern. I'd actually tried to sell it earlier in 2025 and replace it with a tidy Accord Aerodeck, but that had a starting issue when still with the seller and after a few months of him trying to sort it we realised it wasn't going to work out and he graciously refunded my deposit. He did offer it to me cheaper, but I had other stuff going on and didn't need a project.

Avensis SR went back to @BorniteIdentity and Daniel had the pleasure of taking it over the magic 300,000 miles, which was only right after he'd done the majority of it. Miss SL and her BF initially replaced it with a Land Cruiser Colorado but that turned out to be rusty and not entirely reliable so it got sold and they now have a 2012 Santa Fe. In fairness this is much more car-like to drive and it has decent economy, lots of room inside which is ideal for the work they're doing on their house plus useful towing weight of 2,500kg on their manual example.

Mrs SL has been unable to drive for several years and there was no point her Auris (visible back right) just sitting around. None of the children wanted it so it got sold through an ad on here to someone looking for an easier life than his SAAB convertible was giving him.

LS400 went to @Schaefft after my off-hand comment in the wanted ad that led to me rehoming the Carina E. I'd thoroughly enjoyed it for 5+ years but another opportunity came up (at this point it may get a little complicated, bear with me or just flick through and look at the photos).

In early 2023 Miss SL's BF (MSBF from now on) bought himself a dark blue Mk4 LS400:

Shortly afterwards a similar model came up for sale on the Lexus forum, same colour but sold for spares/repair. It was a decent price so MSBF and his stepdad took the garage recovery truck up to Donna Nook on the Lincs coast and brought it back:

Even then it became apparent that long-term it was the better of the two cars. However he kept going with the R-reg LS as his daily driver, which was replaced by a 2018 MX-5 late last year (by replaced I mean tucked away in the garage alongside his MR2 and pair of BMWs for drifting, but with funds needed for the house it will be coming up for sale soon).

Last October Miss SL and BF announced they were looking to buy a house and the LS400s needed to be sold. I did some quick thinking and realised it would be a shame to let the S-reg car go and perhaps I could take it on myself, hence finding a new home for my old white LS. Rico very quickly advised of his desire for that one and has reported on his slightly challenging collection mission elsewhere....

So, was it good as I remembered? This is what it looked like after 2+ years in the back of the garage:

Not sure what was up with the Rover, I think it's still there.

Dusty and fitted with 16" wheels from the R-reg car, as MSBF swapped its more attractive DHP 17" wheels onto the one he was using.

As an aside, DHP = Dynamic Handling Pack. Toyota/Lexus GB did a few home-brewed sporty models in the 1990s and '00s like the Avensis SR (as above) and Camry Sport (which I had some years ago). Rather than being a separate trim level Lexus offered the DHP as an option on this final generation of LS400, basically consisting of bigger 17" wheels and Pirelli P Zero tyres, 10mm lower springs and an upgraded rear anti-roll bar. I think it came about after the MD tried a modified car and liked the changes.

Yes, there is rat poison here. The garage is rather rural.....

So what was the running issue that took it off the road shortly after it had an MoT in 2023? Seems like it was just some loose bolts on the VVTi pulley, which have since been replaced along with other works (more in a moment).

Not too bad underneath,I think it needed just one bit of welding for the MoT. No exhaust here, because.....

We took the Powerflow stainless steel replacement which MSBF had put onto the R-reg car, then swapped the original spec system across.

At this point things then went a bit slow. They put it through an MoT in November but failed on a few things:

Brake pipe easy enough to resolve, but with the headlights it wasn't just a case of adjusting them as they have auto-levelling. Eventually found a pair of used ones off someone locally and that kickstarted things. New MoT was done a few days ago and I arranged to collect it on Friday evening. Sorry, no collection mission as it was just a case of Miss SL dropping me off on the way home after a dusty day pulling down an old ceiling at their house.

With good weather yesterday it was very pleasing to be able to do this:

My taped-off-housemate-in-1994/95 Jungle cassette has never sounded so good!

Inside is pretty decent, mostly just the mats have suffered:

Rear seats are heated and there seems to be more legroom behind me than in the white car (which is completely different, despite looking very similar).

As well as lots of history it also came with the original CD:

Lexus LS400 CD

There's a 6-disc changer in the glovebox so I can listen to it, one day.

I'm owner #7. It started off registered as A11 EFF, sold new by McCarthy in Maidstone (presumably that place than later became Beadles and is now Group 1). When sold after a year or two it became S83 JGX, then became P10 MDW for some years. It then seemed to end up at Lexus Lincoln and had been up that way until MSBF got it in 2023. Lots of the recent paperwork is from Manby Motors Ltd, which I must have driven past on last weekend's trip to see Ratdat.

The history file contains almost every MoT from new, including one from early 2002 when it was tested somewhat prematurely - in those pre-computerised MoT days I think the garage got confused and thought it was a '96 car due to the P-reg plate it was then wearing! Main dealer stamps in the book up to 2009 then lots of paperwork thereafter including evidence of timely cam belt swaps and some surprising (and expensive) bills. In recent years it was rustproofed and had the alternator and PAS pump rebuilt.

Which brings us up-to-date with me taking it over.

As said, MSBF got it running properly after replacing the VVTi pulley bolts. The garage then gave it a precautionary cam belt and water pump replacement and oil and filter change. MoT was issued on Wednesday and I got it insured. My current policy with FJ wouldn't cover it (not a classic in their eyes) so I went to Howden who seem to have taken over RH. They got me covered at reasonable cost, with the bonus of business cover so I can use it for work.

Freshly taxed, I picked it up on Friday evening and got the few miles home with no issue, other than the fuel light glowing brightly (but still with a bit of range, according to the display). Buoyed by this success and pleased with how good it looked after being washed I thought it would be good for a trip down to father-in-law's. Got as far as the fuel station but had the battery warning light on (and headlight levelling). Not wanting to get stuck in the dark with Mrs SL I did the sensible thing and headed back home, then took the trusty RX instead.

I'm planning to pick up a new battery today. Fingers crossed that's it and not the alternator as it was rebuilt, but it's not impossible.....

Other than the possible headlight levelling issue (which would be annoying as the lights have been replaced) I'm also aware it's not getting particularly warm inside. The temperature gauge gets to the right place, but I'm wondering if the coolant system needs bleeding after they replaced the water pump? Good job it has heated seats.

Can now also drop this photo in the right place. I picked up a pair of NOS DHP wheels from a former Lexus dealer in Norwich. One has a slight scuff but I'm sure can be sorted when I get a pair of the originals refurbished (for which these will be a good reference).

Like the other home-made Toyota/Lexus specials they come from a European maker, in this case OZ.
