However it appears wotsisname on Car SOS whacked the Beetle in for a test first to check what it needed ...and it really was restored in days...! Well done  !  GPX636H

I'm finding this is very useful for checking out cars where they don't mention it has been in for an mot recently and failed on a load of things. Instead it's just been sitting around/surplus to requirements/wife doesn't like it/bought another car/growing family (delete as applicable) followed up with 'I'm sure it wouldn't need much for an mot'. Yeah, right.

This threads brilliant! Whose gonna be the first to try and buy one of these failed clunkers and chip the price down by printing its own fail sheet out?

"Carpet missing" can't think why that would matter

Forgot to put it in to cover the Flintstones hole in the drivers footwell.

"Carpet missing" is an example of why advisory section is going to be withdrawn.  Shows both incompetence of NT and adds credibility to belief of thick drivers that MOT is a bumper to bumper service.

I dont think they will do away with advisories completely but there may be less of them

you cant do away with them, if someone turned up with tyres with 1.61mm of tread youve got to pass and advise otherwise 50 miles up the road they are illegal and youre the garage that gave them a pass you will be getting a visit

Interestingly enough I just used this for my Rover. My car wears a private plate which my last Rover also wore. This site shows MOT entries for BOTH vehicles which gave me a panic about my current one being clocked!

Very shit if you ask me.

Thought the same too

Also the Simca doesn't need a fog light at that age.  Retro-fitted ones legalised from c.1979 wasn't it?

Agree, that's lousy and might be the undoing of this FOI effort.  It's fun right now for us, but I can't see any of this lasting.

From a chat with a, "Man from the Ministry" it is a combination of the huge number of complaints from consumers about laughable and spurious advisories, coupled with the burgeoning litigation culture that is seeing advisories off.  As we speak the language is being tightened up and once the switchover is considered bedded down, users of the service will be reminded that vehicles pass or fail as presented.  Only Arthur Daileys cars pass with flying colours.

When my cars pass with flying colours I get a handshake from the MOT station proprietor, to congratulate me on the condition of the car. His advice is 'keep it up'.

Lol, just had a look at my Sterling. It really is a pile of shit that just scrapes passed MOTs by the flake of it paint. No wonder the rear brakes are complaining, the sills must have been welded a fair few times too.

Still, it's a bloody nice way to get about.

Bugger and balls.

Was imagining old Tarby hurriedly purchasing a cheap Mercedes Comms unit CD off eBay and rigging his laptop up to it to shave some mileage off the old crate.

Then he goes to his shed and trips over the new tyre which he's been meaning to fit for three years.

On a side-note, fiat4alfa - nice avatar. It's my dad who is the guy in that SoCo advert dontyaknow. PHAKT.

Back before he sold it, a canny MOT inspector did the right thing and failed my Dad's '74 MG Midget on the following (amongst others)

registration plate fitted to the front does not have black characters on a white background (6.3.2a)
registration plate fitted to the rear does not have black characters on a yellow background (6.3.2b)

Which is good, because they looked shit.

T'isn't broke here ? I haven't got youtube video..only the sound.. Is it to do with Talk Talk hack ?

The local motor trader did a post on facebook earlier, and I checked out an 09 plate fiat 500.

Oil leak advised on its first mot, the same macphearson strut has been an advisory its whole life, its failed twice in its life on tyres and one of tbe wheels has impact damage...

All modern cars etc, he wants 7 large for it too. If I was any more of a prick id post its own advisories up but dont want to make local enemies...

406 failed in 2011 for a loose passenger seat, pretty much everything else seems to have been scrapped before the new system came in

Kwick con type test centres are always gonna fail it if they can on tyres, exhast , dampers , headlight aim....anything they can fix cheap and charge loads for ..

"Carpet missing" can't think why that would matter

All I can think of is carpet in the driver's footwell, where, if it were missing, is a potential slip hazard the same as not having rubber pads on the foot pedals.

Posted

So today I tested a car which had a screw in the tyre.

On the old mot system there were 'non component related advisisories" one of which was "nail in tyre"

New system doesn't have this but has a text box to type an advisory in to.

I typed in "screw in offside rear tyre"

It came up with an error code along the lines of "A profanity has been detected"

So I can't say "screw", that's the end of the road for advisories such as "shit wheels"
