So I know a couple of people liked the Ford ETIS link I shared, so I thought I'd do a bit of digging and see what other sites I can use. Feel free to add anything else you can find around the realms of "finding out information on cars"

Update 21/12/2018

Registration Enquiries

https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/

Doesn't need a make and model so can check any plate and tell you what car it is

Gives colour/engine, Tax/MOT dates plus pass/fail for previous MOTs (with notes), plus CO2 level and tax cost

Now doesn't need manufacturer - just reg. Only returns the manufacturer though, not the model.
Gives colour, engine size, Tax and MOT expiry dates, plus can tell you last owner change if you supply V5 ref num

Now doesn't need manufacturer - just reg. Returns manufacturer AND model, plus MOT history.

Gives MOT history, number plate changes (only if you search on new plate), and dates of owner changes
(need account for full info - use "autoshite@mailinator.com" and "horseless")

Registration plate locations (pre-2001 and new style) plus age identifiers, font information etc.

Generic VIN Decoders

(Use these if there's no manufacturer specific)

http://www.vindecoderz.com/ - gives recall information plus original specs, not specific to car

http://en.vindecoder.pl/ - original standard and optional equipment details, from brochure

Registration VIN Conversion

http://www.blue-print.com/Newweb/index6_fs.asp

Searching for either a reg plate or a VIN gives you the opposite

This is now fully working - thanks Tam for letting me know.

You can use user:autoshite and password:HorseyHorseless for the odd lookup, I'd recommend if you're giving it a bit of hammer then create your own FREE account as I dare say they'll notice if we're all using it at the same time.

(Username: AC11166778

Type a VIN into the top left box, then choose Free Services -> Replacement Parts Documentation -> Vehicle Characteristics from the menu to see a build sheet.

You can also get loads of technical documents - BUT I think a lot of them are chargable.

Please don't change the password! We'll wait and see whether they get grumpy that the account gets accessed from all over the place.

Tested back to a 1989 Citroen AX

Ford

https://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleSelection.do

Can convert from VIN to Registration and vice versa, shows build options/paint/trim/date/engine config

A whole heap of exploded parts diagrams for most cars I could think of.

Could someone sense-check the part numbers it dishes out as I can't confirm if they're all manufacturers own, or specific to this site.

I do wonder how many independent garages know they can have access to all the official docs legally, for a reasonable fee under EU laws.

That BMW VIN site is brilliant. Here's a few more I use:

https://www.cartell.ie/

Gives basic info including make and model. Irish site but works on UK registrations too.

http://www.juratek.com/applications.php

Similar to Cartell but gives a bit more vehicle info. Used to show the VIN but this has been removed for some reason so it's now less useful.

http://www.cardatachecks.co.uk/carcheck/lookup.php

This one shows the last 3 digits of the VIN, MoT history and all previous registrations. It used to also show the dates of re-registration but these have been removed.

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-letters.htm

A directory of pre-1973 registrations showing where and when each combination was issued.

Do you mind me putting those into the first post to make stuff easy to find? That cardatacheck is quite good for uncovering previous reg plates, I thought there was another site that did that but can't find it.

Reg plate locations is a good one too

Aaah, maybe. I'll log out ;)

You can register yourself BTW, I just said I was a motor trader and it basically said "Whatever, here you go". The trickiest part was it wanted some sort of VAT number, I put in "1234" and it flagged it up but went through anyway.

No change, thanks for trying. If it's free to get a login, I'll give that a try.

Great idea for a thread, and very public spirited.

PS if anyone wants a copy of the (frankly, awful) Renault Dialogys VMs I got for the Vel Satis, let me know - they don't only cover the presidential one...

I'm totally confused, I used that UK vehicle website, I put in my cars reg and it came back saying the car has probably done 90,000 miles which is average for its age.

In order for it to show last keeper changes I had to log in which I did via Facebook, I then put my cars reg in again which gave me last keeper change dates BUT also somehow it suddenly knows my cars almost exact current mileage, it's now saying my mileage is 146,799, that's almost bang on, it's 146,685. HOW HAS IT WORKED THIS OUT, WHERE DOES IT SUDDENLY GET MILEAGE INFO FROM?

Take the mileage from the most recent MOT and add the average distance covered between previous MOT's. Divide the average between MOT's by say 12 to get monthly mileage and multiply by number of months since most recent MOT and voila, you get the estimated current mileage. The more consistent the mileage covered between MOT's is the more accurate the estimation will be. Yours is 114 miles out and by doing the above with my mileages it over estimates by 736 miles so the mileage covered between MOT's must be more consistent with your car than mine.

I think they don't display that when you don't log in because it would weird people out but when singing in there will probably be something in the terms of service saying that you agree to them calculating it from MOT data.

Typed my old Mondeo reg in, it brought this up! Doesn't look like UK. How can I find out how this came about. It's definitely mine not a rip off as mine had the purple fog light shrouds! This is wierd!!

Looks like a British height/weight restriction sign, give way markings and typical UK street name sign across the road. Could be similar elsewhere in Europe of course but I'm certain that is in the UK.
