That DVLASearch site is odd, I've signed up twice and the first time I got booted off before my first search - the second time it let me do one search but then kicked me off. Both times my account has been removed, can't log back in.

Blueprint is still working BTW, I was on it yesterday.

just to update this thread, sadly it no longer works now :(

I think the DVLASearch site is the only website left now that will tell you the VIN from the Reg number for free now? (he says with 14 credits left, whoever ends up checking my account for activity is going to have a right giggle LOL)

Are there any sites still working that will give a VIN number from a registration? Have had a car for years that is on the DVLA computer but the chassis plate was long gone when I bought it in bits. At some point I would like to apply for a V5c. Any pointers would be appreciated.

heres a good car info website I just ran across https://www.carbaba.co.uk/

use the "value my car" thing  give it the reg and just a made up milage and it will happily disgorge a good bit info about whatever your vehicle your looking up :)  (seems to use the same back end my special tool uses)

does not give VIN numbers or plate history etc tho sadly

So I know a couple of people liked the Ford ETIS link I shared, so I thought I'd do a bit of digging and see what other sites I can use. Feel free to add anything else you can find around the realms of "finding out information on cars"

Update 21/12/2018

Registration Enquiries

https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/

Doesn't need a make and model so can check any plate and tell you what car it is

Gives colour/engine, Tax/MOT dates plus pass/fail for previous MOTs (with notes), plus CO2 level and tax cost

Now doesn't need manufacturer - just reg. Only returns the manufacturer though, not the model.
Gives colour, engine size, Tax and MOT expiry dates, plus can tell you last owner change if you supply V5 ref num

Now doesn't need manufacturer - just reg. Returns manufacturer AND model, plus MOT history.

Gives MOT history, number plate changes (only if you search on new plate), and dates of owner changes
(need account for full info - use "autoshite@mailinator.com" and "horseless")

Registration plate locations (pre-2001 and new style) plus age identifiers, font information etc.

Generic VIN Decoders

(Use these if there's no manufacturer specific)

http://www.vindecoderz.com/ - gives recall information plus original specs, not specific to car

http://en.vindecoder.pl/ - original standard and optional equipment details, from brochure

Registration VIN Conversion

http://www.blue-print.com/Newweb/index6_fs.asp

Searching for either a reg plate or a VIN gives you the opposite

This is now fully working - thanks Tam for letting me know.

You can use user:autoshite and password:HorseyHorseless for the odd lookup, I'd recommend if you're giving it a bit of hammer then create your own FREE account as I dare say they'll notice if we're all using it at the same time.

Manufacturers:

Audi

http://www.audiworld.com/forums/vindecoder.php

Type a VIN into the top left box, then choose Free Services -> Replacement Parts Documentation -> Vehicle Characteristics from the menu to see a build sheet.

You can also get loads of technical documents - BUT I think a lot of them are chargable.

Please don't change the password! We'll wait and see whether they get grumpy that the account gets accessed from all over the place.

Tested back to a 1989 Citroen AX

Ford

https://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleSelection.do

Can convert from VIN to Registration and vice versa, shows build options/paint/trim/date/engine config

A whole heap of exploded parts diagrams for most cars I could think of.

Could someone sense-check the part numbers it dishes out as I can't confirm if they're all manufacturers own, or specific to this site.

Paint

Search for colour codes (* is a wildcard), tells you which other names a paint is known by to help matching parts from eBay.
