It's a good thread, Mazda knew their stuff more than they let on I reckon, my 323F was probably one of the best handling cars I've driven, although it's perhaps not fair to compare it to the Volvo 940 with 4 perished tyres that came after it.

The 0-60 of the 323 sounds pretty good, I guess the earlier ones with the timing chain engines are faster than the later 1.3s with a timing belt like I had a few years back, which was nippy up to about 40mph then glacial above that.

Good write up, I agree that the more you look the more interesting features there are to find.

 

As kids (anyone younger than 35) start to look back at cars of their younger days it'll be the Japanese ones that stand out; the late '80s and early '90s were a fantastic time for truly mad designs.  Hirst continues to be either a barometer of youth-cool or a slightly more sinister version of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

I had a 156, and loved it! It was the 2.4JTD tho, and despite saying 107k on the clock I found a sticker under the bonnet some months later for the 155k service...

It was a superb car tho, and the interior was awesome. I'd quite like another. Mrs B is less keen... She thought it was unreliable. But it never broke down! Until it broke a clutch, with a DMF, so I traded it in and lost more Money than I have ever lost on a car before.

I have BV72 156 and you are right there is a fair bit of work that needs doing, it is with an Alfa specialist in Northampton, the gear change has been sorted with the supply and fitting of a s/h linkage. Still to go front suspention arms, radiator and brakes, I don't push on time as I am short of parking at home so I guess I will get it back one day. Then a touch of paint for the wing/door. In the mean time I can still go around saying I have a "V6 Veloce", I love the way that sounds!

I was in want of the BV72 too, but the 156 dizzler Wagon daily I already have had for the past 6 years has been great and trouble-free; so I don't want to break the spell by being greedy and follow the drama queen road as alluded to above by Mr Hirst.  At least I'm only a dash away from Buckingham so I know where it sleeps and can keeping ear out for a possible future roffle.

 

I should also mention I owned a largely trouble-free 155 Widey TS for 8 years prior to that too.  They only reason that is not still kept in a lock-up somewhere is due to the Wife getting it clouted into cat-B land by a red van man.
