The One Show featured the boss of poundland the other day and made me wonder about a different business model:

"Motorscrote."

Basically a draughty hangar filled with slightly grubby Megane Scenics, T-reg Vectras, basically prime Cavcraft stock, a "no-finance" buy it or fuck off policy, no haggling, just a long list of perfectly functional cheap cars under the £grand mark.

Cars would be warranted but with a very specific and thorough list of sensible exclusions, cars would be "MOT safe" and legit.

There would be an on-site weighbridge for p/x valuations, a Greggs outlet and trampolines for the imbecile offspring to vomit all over. Maybe a resident tattooist.

With the exception of the Greggs, Billy is already doing it:)

Robin Bridge sounds like a super hero* who floods old cars with water before scrapping them.

*Or some twat from Chester.

He should start up a scrap yard for Reliants with a name like that.

Sounds like Robin B'stard might be more appropriate

As always with this type of loan/finance the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. I've got no issue with anyone making a fair wage but these lowlife really do take the piss. Ok I suppose the risk of getting bumped out of payment is greater but I'm sure they have reduced the chances of this by now.

From the (little) daytime telly I watch 1000% interest is cheap........I think one of the pay(giro)day loansharks is more than 4000%.

Anyway I digress.....Car Craft = Wefleeceanypunter.cunts

Imagine holding all that depreciating stock on your books that you don't actually own?

This is why uncle Arnold is cheap. He's got a ruthless stock policy which is why sometimes you can get real bargain from him. If that doesn't work then off to auction. Just don't try to bring to being it back when it blows up.

I can tell you without hesitation or doubt that such a business model would be illegal.  Been there, done that, appeared in court, etc.

Illegal perhaps, but sounds very similar to Cannock Auctions.

Lack of ability to deal with anything apart from cash up front - check.

Greasy food - check

Potential Deathtraps - check

The only difference is I guess who owns the car you're shortly going to find yourself waiting for the breakdown service in.

I really feel for that kid on the other forum. He's paying mortgage money on a base spec car that you could grab out the papers for next to nothing.

Finance can be oh, so evil if you don't know what you are doing.

Interestingly, he posted a followup to his infamous thread yesterday.

The poor Clio ended up being scrapped by accident!

I'll give that lad his due, he got an almost unbelievable amount of shit, yet has returned to that forum and came across as a gent.

Respect to him for being the bigger man and admitting he was wrong. Good lesson learnt!

It'll work out quite cost effective in the long run because he won't be taken in again.

Actually scratch that, just read the thread, fair play to him.

He was pretty ok in the face of some know-it-all keyboard warriors.

Think back to being age 19. When you wanted something, you wanted it and you'd figure out any way of making it happen, whether it was a newer car than your mates, a massive HiFi in your room, or a glance at Laura's knickers behind the bike shed.

He decided what he wanted, he went for it, with hindsight it was a bloody stupid goal but he got there.

Also, there was some bollocks ideas in that thread like "you have five days to reject it".... Oh aye, Carcraft just loved people driving around for half a week and giving it back, I bet that would be dead easy.

I thank God I wasn't like that when I was 19...My interests extended to battered second hand guitars and cassettes. I guess what the kid really needed was a dad/older brother who could have helped him.

It's worth remembering that some of us have nobody to help/give advice in these situations; and if you run a beater it's often very difficult to find a mechanic to do jobs for you.

When I was 19 I had a 9 year old Micra that had faded to "Vauxhall pink" on the boot lid, had a whining gearbox with knackered syncro on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, a front crossmember that looked like it had been in the sea and a dent in the rear door. I had wheels though and was happy with them, bollocks to what anyone else thought!

Speaking as a motor trader, I can tell you the vast volumes of car stock in CrockCraft were owned by independent traders on a SOR basis to the 'stealership'. Less of a car dealer than a finance house which gave a free car for every loan sold. I doubt they had any stock on the books bar the odd bit of auction tat one of their 'buyers' bought at a knock-down price after the other traders ignored it for good reasons.

I am amazed by this. What an all-round SHITE business. I thought they were a shit car dealers. But even the car dealers bit doesn't apply!!!! I hope the guy who dreamed them up dies.

The only reason that BCA bought WBAC was that they were about to sign another deal with Manheim.  Nice easy way to protect supply was for them to buy them out.  That has led to Carcraft going into meltdown because they didn't even think to get anything other than board representation, so their pick of the runts that went from WBAC to their showrooms disappeared.
