But not Princess Anne. Therefore, worthless.

Sorry, Eddy...  ;)

good drills. I once had sex with a black lady from Dudley in a Vectra, and so I have fond memories of them.

Not fond enough to shell out my own brass on one, mind you.

These have a celebrity following, I heard that Lenny Henry's mum has one.

Coincidence??

:-D

I mentioned a car, people advised me to avoid it, I bought it.  Now you're all praising me (worshipping?) and laughing, but wait till you see the photos.  Oh boy yes, just you wait...

The wait is over!  Well more or less, anyway.

Today I went to work as normal; and as normal on a Friday went from there to Carer Support Group, then home.  Took the dog out, had my lunch and a sleep, and a coffee.  Then I decided it was time to set off on my solo collection trip.  So I left my house by the front door...

Walked to the closed end of the street and down the alley until I came out at Lloyd's Garage...

Turned left and followed the line of the railway past the cottages...

And on, to the main road...

A slight turn to the left shows this garage...

Money was exchanged for big bits of paper and one switchblade key, which fits this thing...

There's no accounting for people, is there?  This had been chopped in against a BMW 1-series, of all things!

So, I strolled around the corner to the Post Office...

Here I set up a Direct Debit for the VED.  Pleasant surprise: how smoothly that went, and they won't take any money until the 18th!  So I crossed the road to Boots to pick up a prescription and while I was waiting, this pulled up outside...

Finally I was able to walk back and collect the car, and drive it home.

Notice: no petrol station shot!  There was a quarter-tank showing, which will probably get me to work and back tomorrow.   It bloody should, that's only 8 miles in total!  I'll put some in soon and add the snap.

So, how is it?  Well it's comfy enough, bearing in mind I've driven it less than a mile so far.  It's quiet and seems to have enough power.  Oh and the garage washed it for me, which was nice, saves me a job.

So far so good.

Nice one Eddy! I really do like these Vectras, they are a nice design and a nice functional car. Yours could do with some proper Vauxhall wheel trims.

Can't wait to see updates on this.

Oarsumm collection thread - wish there was more like this, this forum etc etc...

Looks alright. Keep it on steelies sans hubcaps for the 'continental car on winter tyres' look, I salute your dedication to the cause. The fact it has a quarter tank is worth a good 20% of the asking price alone.

Gr8 work!

OMG u are Chris & Ruffy from Road Wars AICMFP

Nice job! At that price you can't lose, a lot of car for the money. I'd certainly rather have your Vectra than a BMW 1 series anyway.

Nowt wrong with that Ed, nicely done chap!

Tell you what I have noticed.... it only has electric windows in the front (cheapo) and they don't work anyway.  Is that likely to be a fuse issue?

Posted

It's likely to be a £350 Vauxhall issue, but if neither work I'd check fuse first, then connection to the back of the switch. Does passenger work off passenger switch?

Press button very hard and the windows will likely work; the switches get gummed up. You can dismantle them and clean them out.

Eddy switches can be dismantled and cleaned.

Go to vectra c forum - lots of good info on there.

20p..... lol

I didn't know there was a Vectra C forum, I'll have a look at it later on. Cheers Bren!

Oh and you won't believe this... before I posted the collection story last night I showed the pics to MrsR. What did she say? "Where's the photo at the petrol station?" Well trained wife there, lol...

Looks good for the money Eddy.

I quite like the Vectra C - they had a few extra options over competitors at the time and were cheap.

I gave £5200 in 2009 for a then 2 year old 1.8 VVT Exclusiv with 15k miles on it. I wound it round to 45k in 12 months then sold it for £4500 to a trader!

These are very cheap cars now, I bought another one in 2012 as a cheap runner for the missus and gave 600quid for it on an 02 plate. Was absolutely nothing wrong with it either.

Funnily enough, that V40 I had a while back was a CD spec, it had absolutely everything except electric rear windows. Lesser models have four electric windows.

Strange where the manufacturers get their ideas from.

Looks a nice buy Mr Ramrod

Being a 52 plate, did our wonderful government clobber you for extra road tax?

No, and No.  I did try leaning over and pressing the switch, but it gave exactly the same result as those on my door.  Tax, is roughly equivalent to the Mercury so that wasn't too bad.

So, it's been to work today and seems pretty good on the whole.  As said earlier, I think I've been spoiling myself for so many years, I've forgotten how to appreciate mid-range cars like this.  It isn't that many years really since I would have been grateful to regard this car as an upgrade.  I've had it on some open roads today, where it showed how little effort is required to get up to the speed limits, and potentially beyond.  I might learn to enjoy it yet, despite the total lack of style.  We will see, won't we?

If ever a posting reinforced my original point, that was it!  Thank you kindly sir!

do the widows go up and down with the key?

Posted

I don't understand, Frank; should they, and if so, how and why?

Eddy my astra will open and close its windows if i press and hold the open or close button on the key fob yours may do the same.

Posted

self closer 5 series bmws do it turn key in lock to lock doors but hold it and anything open - shuts :D

Posted

use key of button press/turn & hold open to lower the windys and lock to raise (will do sunroof [if fitted] as well)

Ah yes, thank you.  I've learned about that from the Vectra forum now but haven't tried it yet.  Didn't so much as touch the car yesterday, but then it wasn't a day to be outside.  Today I've still got indoor jobs to do although the sun is shining and look, here I am idling on AS.  I'll have a go at that tomorrow, probably.

I bloody like that, straight looking motor cheap as chips and from round the corner, you can't do any better.

I used to deliver these by the hundred, i liked em a lot, all had some guts and didn't try to effin stall on you as you drove 'em up onto the top deck, considerably smaller overall (but just as roomy inside) than the now seriously bloated Insignia of electric parking brake and the worlds most useless door mirrors fame.

Summat you may not know, but probably do, the estate and Signum versions  have longer wheelbase...and on that note of complete uslessness info....

Posted

These are actually a pretty good steer and there are still loads of these early ones about which must say something. Can't argue at £350.

Posted

You can't argue at 350 quid. However a diesel one of these was the first brand new car I ever drove and it was bloody awful. I was grateful to get back to my 10 year old 170,000 mile 520i

Thinking about it... I wasn't planning to put hubcaps on, because I quite like the CID look, and if I decide to paint the wheels it might be an easy way to a BTCC/Peugeot Rallye steels look.  BUT: if anyone has a set of more or less presentable 16" caps for this, especially free, I'm interested. ;)
