I quote : Until Jan, it ran perfectly with no hot and cold start problems. Driving along the motorway, the engine management light came and 10 mins later the engine started misfiring. Drove the car onto a motorway slip road and turned it off and noticed smoke from under the car. Called out Greenflag and he drove it onto the back of his wagon and took it to our local garage. He looked over it the next day and it was found that the exhaust was glowing orange after it had been running for a while so he suspected a blockage somewhere. I drove it home and put it on the drive and it's been there ever since. I started it every couple of days with no problem and last week it wouldn't start so is being sold as a non-runner so will have to be trailered away.

What's the worst that couldn't happen ?

Posted

The worse thing that couldn't happen is for you to buy it. The worse thing that could happen is that you did. I would hazard a guess you're going to struggle more than a Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Merit towing a 40 foot long static caravan up Rhuallt hill on the A55 trying to find a good second hand engine.

Verdict: AVOID. That's my rotary tip of the day.

Could just be a blocked cat, but these engines aren't renowned for their reliability. A shame, because I think they look great.

That was my first thought, where do you get a Ford V4 from these days though?

I blew my 2cv engine up on rhuallt hill. I was thinking to myself how well it was running, and was just passing a triumph spitfire when the crankshaft snapped. Bang, thud, bang, bang bang, etc.

I attempted it in a 4 cylinder Euro Cargo. It was the longest holiday I've ever had in Wales.

I like the description of how the thing failed - however it is utterly pointless.

A bit like the captain of the titanic saying "ship was fine leaving Southampton, then this chunk of ice etc..."

A service history is of little use when the engine is fucked.

Weigh in the cat, use the money for fuel, if it don't get you home call the rac

Looks like driving down the motorway with a miss fire putting lots of unburnt fuel in to the cat has killed / blocked it.

Plugs and coils are silly money likewise a new cat then you have hope its not a lack of compression thats the real fault.

Seats in them are nice though.

Good job the seats are nice, you do a lot of waiting around.

Does sound like a fuel-filled cat, but you'd hope the garage would cure the misfire before running it and giving up.

You can get rebuild kits for them for about 600 quid. I think a rebuilt refurb engine is about 2 grand.

There's a couple of really nice sr20det Nissan turbo conversions out there. I though the mx5 motor would go in their quite neatly but might be a bit potless.

I used to floor it on the downhill bit just before the main hill and get to 70. Foot nailed hard to the floor all the way up in 4th and on a good day it would only have dropped to 45 at the crest. On a bad day, well it went bang!

I also drove up it and the rest of the a55 to the mold turning on the cats eyes during a blizzard ( must have been 1994 ). About 20ft visability and 4inches of snow but the 2 cv kept going over the bump, bump of the eyes. Passed loads of cars stranded on the hill - my trick was not stopping or even slowing!

That's what I did, but just as you'd build up momentum some tit would pull out on you and it was game over. Coming up it in my 609D Merc beavertail with a Nissan Bluebird on the back was an experience I won't forget in a hurry.

Trainfare to Southport?  Ã‚£3 something last time I looked.  Feck That. I'd get the misses to tow me home (all of 6 mile) in the Mx5

Judging by the no of spares/repairs ones out there a good engine costs considerably more than most of the cars that are left

Why not buy a working one? They seem cheap enough....until something goes wrong. I have driven one and they are great, but I wouldn't want to own one.

when the rotary borks people put s2000 engines in them or v8s :D

My next door neighbour is on about either selling or breaking his 54 plate RX8.  He's put a hell of a lot of work into it but it's got a hot start issue that he can't get to the bottom of.

Tell him to use it when it is cold then.

Hot start issue he can't get to the bottom of ?

That just might be worn out rotor seals / negligible compression.

Buy it!

They look great and are a smashing drive, handle well, good brakes etc. The engines when running properly are cracking fun; rev like hell and soooooo smooth, but the like a drink or oil and petrol... quite a large drink of the latter!

Rebuilt engines are 2K but it does sound like a blocked cat. But, parts are pricey and if coil packs are the original problem I think they are costly. I could be wrong.

A non runner is worth fuck all even a late one so if a nice one with a borked motor can be acquired for pennies then it's a worthwhile risk.

But, you don't see me putting my cash where my big mouth is do you? I would though if I had any balls....

A ball park figure. So, worst case scenario, needs recon engine, cat and coil pack, costing maybe 3k.(probably worth checking) 2006 RX-8's seen to be going for around 3,5k, so if you can get it for 500 quids you may (or may not) be getting a bargain. Minus your labour of course (free?), plus the experience, however brief (which it should be, considering how likely it is to go bang and empty your bank account again).

Buy one that works. Have fun with it. Sell it before it goes wrong.

My sister bought one a few years back. She knows nothing about cars and just bought it because it was a flashy red sports car. It was fine, but incredibly thirsty. One day it wouldnt start and that was it - it sat on her drive for a couple of months. Eventually she paid for RAC to come and look at it. He eventually got it going. Apparently they are very easy to flood when starting, and once flooded a nightmare to get going. Procedure is apparently to connect the jump leads, disable its fuel pump and spin it over for ages until the engine dries out. If that fails to work, they need a tow start.

Anyway, she chopped it in to Arnold Clark for a Corsa. The RX8 had something like 11 owners before her. The sales dude reckoned most were like that - people buy them and dont keep them long.
