Rusty Triumphs in Scotland - To gas or not to gas(less MIG) - 09/11/24

Guess which guy read the book AFTER making changes and then had to go back and redo everything to actually be right...

Carb air flow balanced using the highly technical method of partially covering the intake of each carb with my hand and feeling the air draw. I've yet to fuck around with the mixture.

More pressingly I started disconnecting vac hoses and plugging them to see if anything improved and found one that did! I've no idea what it's for but plugging it made the car much less spluttery at idle so we'll see how that pans out. I also spotted some cracking in the carb mounts so it could well be sucking in air and running lean, although dousing the area in WD40 didn't seem to affect it so it may just be surface perishing.

Finally I also noticed the fuel lines are all looking fairly fucked, for want of a better term. Anybody know a good supplier for ethanol-proof hose? I know there is seemingly a lot of fake stuff floating about...

here is the stuff @Zelandeth fitted to his Model 70 and I bought for mine on his recommendation :) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223008964822 (I think the seller should have other sizes if needed!)

(although I still need to fit it to mine! a slightly leaky fuel tank sadly scarpered that plan, so I cant personally vouch for its toughness, but I dont think Zel has had any issue with it in TPA)

BTW I have been thoroughly enjoying your updates/postings in this thread :)

A test drive down to Largs for a fish supper by the sea has revealed while my tinkering hasn't made anything worse the only real difference is the higher idle speed.

Now, some of you may be thinking "I'm sure it didn't look that bad last year", and that is correct. However that's mostly because all the filler that was on the car when I bought it has now fallen off, and because I rattle canned the arches every couple of months over summer to keep them blue... I have a cunning plan involving sanding all the rust flat fillering over it and pretending it doesn't exist until I have a garage.

I have seen a couple of folks sand back arches like that, hit with rust converter, and then repair with one of the various metal epoxies on the market.  Not as cheap as filler or fibreglass but seemed less prone to cracking and moisture ingress and a good way to deal with pinholes.  Cleaning off the rust as much as you can and slapping paint on, as you were through the summer, is the best way to get maximum mileage out of what you've got really and allows you to monitor things and slow it down rather than hiding it all under wob.  It's not as horrendous as it could be for an old car living outdoors and being used all year round in Scotland.  Give it another dose of sand paper, rust convertor, and rattlecan and eke it out for a bit longer.

There's also another potential arch donor that's closer related, though I'm not sure on availability/cost of panels.

It should pass the MOT with a bit of tape/filler action, it's still passable underneath, it just looks like utter shit. Although a guy in a Range Rover did open his window to say it was "very cool" on Sunday...

They look spot on, sadly SD1 panels are just as scarce...

It fucking should do, I only fitted the exhaust last summer! In actuality it's getting very rough around the welds, I need to wire brush it and paint it with heat resistant paint...

Did an oil change on the Acclaim, then set about sanding, Vactaning and painting the rust...

Bodgetastic but it should keep it looking slightly less shit for a month or two, some of the rust bubbles burst to reveal pristine steel underneath... That's the rattle can which came in the boot of the car when I bought it now empty...

I also poked a big hole underneath in the bit the anti-roll bar mounts to, which is nice...

I've been impressed with the longevity of such repairs going back a good few years now, sand/grind back the grot, slather it with vactan and then slap rattle can paint on top. granted the winters down here are a bit less severe than up your way, but its still good stuff.

Top work. I'll put five quid on it still being as good this time next year.

Much as it looks really tidy for now, the grot looks to be coming from behind...

Unless cpn7ties put something behind the arch,  it'll  be saying hello again PDQ I'd have thought. I regularly used to wob up the large holes in the wings and A pillars of my first car (mk1 gLof). I was always pleased with how neat my P38 skills were to be fair. Always looked shite again after driving through Cornish puddles for a few weeks though.

It's a mix, the front wing is all rusting from the back where mud is getting trapped behind the plastic liner (it was all rotten anyway but had been filled and sanded nicely when I bought the car). The rear arches are a mix of both, whoever fiberglassed the fuck out of them has created a massive dirt trap behind the lip but a surprising amount is surface rust. I did scrape as much dirt out as I could while I was in the area.

I tend to sand/Vactan and paint the rear arches yearly with occasional touchups.

I will admit im a bit surprised to see the 1850 does run, I assume then it was taken off the road because of rust issues or such?

It was the daily driver until I found the chassis legs had ceased to exist.

I think I've only seen the green goddess in the flesh (Grantown or Buckie?), good to see the other one still lives.

The dash is pretty good, the bit holding the choke and lower heater vents is broken on one side so it sits at a jaunty angle but other than that it's all intact, the door tops are all chipped though. I've found the interior to be remarkably resilient to the sun, it's been sat in a field for several years with no deterioration, I left a TDC membership card sat on the dash and it turned brown and melted so it gets hot in there...

Aye, the 1850 was already relegated to "garden ornament" status and the 1300 was the daily runner when we met. I think it was the Buckie Summer show where it absolutely pissed it down and was freezing cold...
