Six Cylinders Motoring Notes

Anybody going to The Stony Stratford Classic car meet tomorrow (Sunday) where hundreds of old cars take over the town?

Normally a new Years Day event, this year it has been postponed due to wind and rain on the first day of 2025.

If you go, come and say Hi. I will be in the vintage section with my 1933 Rolls Royce 20/25.

This afternoon I got my car out of storage and it started ok after a bit of churning to get the fuel up. Now on my drive I am not looking forward to defrosting it without a heater tomorrow morning!

Can you chuck a sheet or blanket over it tonight? Should keep the worst off.

I'll be at Stony tomorrow in my decidedly not vintage but very patinated Saab 900 convertible.

Yes sheet is over the windscreen ready for tonight's temp plunge.

I bought a cheap 12v car heater, but can't remember where I put it.

I'm intending to be there tomorrow.  Hoping it's less mobbed than it was at the last NYD show as you could barely walk around the place was so rammed.

I plan to go early so I don't accidently park on a Amilcar in the crush!

It was the Berkerleys I was worried about last year, they're so low as to be damned near invisible at the best of times!

Well I tried!  Arrived at 0845 and they were already turning people away!  So looks like it's going to be exactly as rammed if not more so than last time.

Thanks to @ianbmw at 08:45 in the Pre-war section he had a space for me near his Cherished Insurance gazebo.

It was very hard to take photos as there were so many people viewing the mind blowing display of Pre-war. I never got to the Classic cars.

Nearly a month ago I had new ignition components fitted to the Gamma because it had a bad misfire. At that time the roads were wet and muddy so while it started and sounded ok I did not drive it. Today I took the Gamma for a run and all is well.

The real purpose for this afternoon was to extract Richard Morris's Mercedes E320 Coupe from storage because I am taking it on a driving tour to mid Wales next weekend.

With 7 cars to move I enlisted the help of @Slowsilver and @Zelandeth. It is quite a bit of work removing covers, reconnecting batteries,  sometimes jump starting cars and then disconnecting them again. We also did a legal and levels inspection on the Mercedes so thanks for the help.

I have a problem with my Mitsubishi Sigma in that when we reassembled the engine after the head gasket failure the engine is locked. Today @ianbmw used his lunch break to put oil down the bores. We will now let it sit for a week or two now.

Ian arrived in his Morgan with the sun shining and mild temperature, it looked a great drive for today.

I think we need to reach a mutual agreement about using photos that make me look fat.

Im also drawing a yearly limit on 90s estate car repairs to the max 2 per year.

other more interesting body styles will be exempt from this or a 25% tariff will be applied, paid for in biscuits and coffee

I am not publishing nude male model photos on my thread with your head photoshoped on!

We only have 4 1990s estates and you made me take the Carlton using enticing words like cheap and free delivery!

I guess I need to buy some more broken Vauxhall’s, I do fancy a MK2 Astra and a Mk2 Cavalier but I am more likely to need a welder than a mech!

Are you quite sure about that?

A recount was demanded by upper management and 6 was the answer.

After extensive research here are the results of the recount. For good measure I have included how long we have had each 90's Estate.

1990 Volvo 740GLE auto Estate (21 years)

1990 Mercedes 200TE (11 years)

1993 Vauxhall Carlton 2.0i Club Estate  (4 years)

1996 Mitsubishi Sigma 3.0i Estate (2 years)

1996 Citroen ZX 1.9TD Estate (14 years)

1999 Volvo V70 T5 Auto (19 years)

I do like that Carlton. If I had more space I could easily justify one in the fleet.

The first three are proper estates, driven by the correct wheels, very, very nice. I do rather like estate cars, I do not understand why they are not more popular. If I could only have one car it would have to be an estate, they are great.

From large Estates to a small run around. My Fiat Seicento went off today for MOT work today. The rear brakes are sticking a bit and the rumour is the rear beam axle has some rust and may need welding or replacing.

I bought it privately from near Warwick. I don't have a original suppling dealer to hand. OC is a Birmingham registration.

The build date is 6 November 1995, but it was not registered new until 30 September 1996.
