Six-cylinder Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 But how do you check the time in the poshest model? In a GT you are going so fast time does not pass! Real answer, they scatter gun a digital clock onto the lower oddment tray. MorrisItalSLX, egg, Mrs6C and 3 others 6
Eyersey1234 Posted February 7, 2019 Posted February 7, 2019 Sorry to hear about the Cadillac. What use is a clock without hands though?
Six-cylinder Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 What use is a clock without hands though? Ask Hairnet he bought the car like that! 320touring and The Moog 2

Six-cylinder Posted February 7, 2019 Author Posted February 7, 2019 More failure, this time the E Type which we have been trying to get back running after the core plugs were changed and found blue water in the back carburettor throat. Two ways it could get there one from the inlet manifold gasket leaking from waterway to a port, but there is nothing obvious. Or second there is a water way built into the inlet manifold and that could be leaking internally. I have ordered a new Gasket and my mech will use his cooling system pressure gauge to test the manifold next week. Sigmund Fraud, RobT and Exiled_Tat_Gatherer 3

Six-cylinder Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 I am taking the VP to Bognor tomorrow to have a manual gearbox conversion and check over before it returns to the road. My friend who owns the trailer volunteered that I could park the loaded ensemble on his drive overnight as it is the end of cul-de-sac while mine is reversing from a 50 mph road not to far from a blind crest. Funny thing since he made the offer he has a viewing on his house this afternoon and made me park the Allegro round the corner until his prospective house buyers have been and gone! wuvvum, Tickman, holbeck and 13 others 16
Six-cylinder Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 I now have this C5 for the evening, useful car but not quite as enjoyable as the XM he used to have, that I could borrow. Mrs6C 1
wuvvum Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 manual gearbox conversionThis is a good thing. I don't normally mind autos, especially in a comfy squishy relaxing car like a Plah, but the AP 'box is sheeeeite. richardthestag and Six-cylinder 2
BeEP Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 I prefer to think of them as endearingly quirky. I had an Allegro 1500 auto (Austin, not fancy VP) a number of years ago and it was quite safe to pull away at T-junctions provided you could see half a mile of clear road in both directions! richardthestag 1
Six-cylinder Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 This is a good thing. I don't normally mind autos, especially in a comfy squishy relaxing car like a Plah, but the AP 'box is sheeeeite. I agree autos in most cases are fine but not AP. The friend who owns the trailer sold them new and remembers having to buy an Auto Allegro back from a customer because it just would not pull itself along when starting from cold.
Six-cylinder Posted February 8, 2019 Author Posted February 8, 2019 Six speed box? AP Auto 4 speed Manual for 1500 5 speed
Asimo Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Does that AP autotransverseoboxamatic use ATF or engine oil? I'm sure I once read somewhere that it uses the E-series sump oil but that sounds such a crap idea, especially with 1970's style 20w30 that turned to sooty jelly in just a few thousand miles.
Asimo Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 No wonder they struggled when cold back then. 'Box might be ok today though with a sump full of 0w20. Which might be thin enough to just finish a 40 year old E-series...... Six-cylinder 1
Eddie Honda Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 I used to have a Maxi 1750HL auto. It went like a rocket* and worked fine. (Initially it didn't, but that was because of lack of use and the SU piston was gummed up. When it freed off...POWAH!) I also had a 1750 manual. The gear change was indeed wank.
D Spares & Tyres Posted February 9, 2019 Posted February 9, 2019 I had a Mini automatic once just because it was cheap and I couldn't afford a better car! I was expecting to hate it but thought it was quite good really. I assume it's the same box but I suppose the lack of body weight helped. Glad to see the VP on its way to being fixed, I was never going to do it! Mrs6C 1
