Looks great!  Well done on the brakes, when I had it I changed the pads (they were all worn to different levels) but cheaped out changing the discs as they weren't too bad at the time.  Probably should have.  Thankfully after that one seizure, which I put down to being driven for 4 hours solid after being sat for 3 months, it never gave me any more grief.

This car is aging in reverse, just keeps getting better.

I always enjoy the Travis Perkins backdrop to your fleet photos brookjm, in the same way I look out for the Omega taxi in Cavcraft's photos.

Had what I was due to be up today cancelled at the last minute, so after breakfast I decided to crawl about in muddy gravel messing about with an old Rover.

Decided to give the rear brakes a look over. Things looks a bit corroded and gummed up on the rear calipers.....

I cleaned each side up and got the pistons winding in and out more easily. Luckily the pistons themselves just had a bit of light tarnishing that came off easy enough. The handbrake linkage was a bit rusted up and once gone over with a wire brush and coppaslipped it moved more easily. I nipped up the cable adjuster too, and bled through some fresh fluid to replace the cloudy old brown stuff that looked a bit like dodgy home brew ale! Whilst I was down there I thought I may as well give the arches and rear suspension mounts a good clean out ...

and squirted a whole load of dynax UB over it.....

So it definitely stops better, but the biggest improvement is just having a handbrake that holds it better on hills.

LOL! Love the B0LL0X plaque!

Imagine if this ever gets sold out of the circle, the new owner will be thinking "WTF?"

Posted

Very nice, what did you use on the bumpers, they seem to look like new in the fleet photos.

Amazing what a new set of proper plates to to lift the look of it.

Posted

I used to expect to have to replace those rear calipers every year as the handbrake got more and more shit over the course of the year, every time a bit of tickling and cleaning had the handbrake back up to scratch though.

Posted

It needed a tickle for the MOT while I had it, the handbrake was terrible (well, barely worked on one wheel and non-existent on the other) but a quick cleanup got it through the test.  Was never great though and had guessed a good overhaul was due.  Excellent work, I painted the arches with underseal paint but that looks a much better job.  Glad to see my seamless* paint repairs are holding up.

Been using this as a general hack recently, it's compact size and speediness means it's perfect for the works car park and blasting along the local A and B roads and lanes. With the Pride Of Longbridge coming up in a few weeks, along with my 1,700 mile Devon- Highlands roadtrip, I decided to finish the last of the servicing jobs- the gearbox oil. This PG1 gearbox has always been quite slick but theres always been a little bit of gear while, especially in the lower 3 ratios. I put it down to the more noisy uprated metal caged bearings Mr B used when he rebuilt the box. Even so, that was in 2010 and with the T series doing its thing of leaking oil, the gearbox was also oil covered and I wanted to check it wasnt quietly pissing out of the gearbox too. I drained off the old stuff off and was glad to see a good 2 litres worth so pretty much on spec for these at capacty...

The filler is in a fiddly place behind and above the nearside driveshaft so I rigged up a sort of remote filler to avoid making a mess of things....

Went for a bit of a spin just for the sake of it, Its a great little car to drive, all was well with the world until as I crested a hill a suicidal pheasant jumped straight out in front of the car! I had visions of the rad being buggered but everything seems ok. Although there was nothing I could do I feel sorry for the poor pheasant who left a few feathers in the air intake.

I wouldn't feel bad. Probably a better death than being shot at by stupid rich folk. Interestingly, I've just had the XM's gearbox oil changed, as there's a slight whine in fifth at 50mph. Unsuprisingly, it has made no difference at all. I guess once it has started to whine, it's a bit late...

In other cars, I have definitely noticed the gearchange improving after an oil change though, so it's always worth doing and sadly often gets neglected.

In regards to "oompth", it doesn't surprise me that yours can shift, brookjm. I have the same lump in my 820, which is massive and an auto. Mine is no ball of fire, but it does have a fair bit of in-gear shove at motorway speeds and is surprisingly good in the BMW lane. I expect yours goes like feces off a planed object...

By gearbox whine do you actually mean Heritage?

It does, Q car in giffer clothing.  Great for A-framing when Reg owned it no doubt.

An 820 is no Q Car, but I think it does suprise a few people when it keeps up with them. What a few letters down from Q? An L-Car?

Just back from my nigh on 2000 mile road trip in the Rover 220. Had a fantastic few days, starting in West Devon, to the most north westerly village in Scotland, and back, via The Pride of Longbridge, the Isle Of Skye and Edinburgh.....

As it co-incided with POL, I decided to pass by there. In fact the only serious traffic on the whole trip was the queue to get in!!! RobT and I had vague plans to meet up, and through chance he was a couple of cars ahead in said queue. There are worse cars to be stuck behind....

Once in Rob's past and present Rovers ended up together next to a whole bunch of MGFs

It was great to catch up, and talk shite!

I wanted to spend longer there, but I had a fair few miles to cover, and set off for Scotland, though not before doing a quick drive by pic of the Main Gates....

I had an overnight stop in Paisley, and the following morning set off up into the Highlands. After couple of hours and a steady climb I pulled in just after Glencoe, to admire the view, give the car a break (and read the paper like a right old giffer)....

En route to the Isle of skye there were always stunning views, but the roads varied enormously in surface. camber and general design and standard of repair. Some were pretty rough and with going through valleys and mountains It was pretty hard on the car for the whole day......

At the summit there was a chance to give the car and I a rest (I was beginning to reallise the car was shrugging everything off, it was more the driver that needed a rest!) and a great view out to Skye......

As I drove further north I saw less and less people, But the roads and views just kept getting better.....

The most north westerly village on the mainland was my next stop, Durness. The following day I passed through one of the least densly populated areas in Europe (apart from deer it seems) and the weather grew more forebodeing as I took an unclassified road due south from Loch Eriboll.....

Again this old Rover had some heavy use over a mixture of roads and tracks and took at times a bit of a pounding- but DHP just shrugged it all off. I eventually threaded my way back to the A9 and Edinburgh, though not before visiting the Forth Rail bridge and North Queensferry.....

It was a bit of a shock to the system coming from a remote wilderness to a bustling city all in a few hours. It was quite late but all the more of an interesting time of day to go for a wander...

I took that last one hoping there might be some shite to spot- but I cant see any.

Appropriately enough though, what with seeing these ancient Scottish historical monuments, I saw this right next to the castle on the way back to my hotel...

I was up early (just as the papers arrived) partly to beat the Edinburgh traffic and partly to clear off before the traffic wardens got out and about....

The very final leg today was a bit of a slog; Edinburgh to West Devon in one go. True to form the car was brilliant, in fact Its one of the best all rounders Ive had- compact, torquey, quite fun to drive and just a comfortable old thing to tool about in really. In fact I'm just about to hop in it again to go and get a takeaway!

Glad i called the pass of the cattle pic right in another thread.. did you take the coast road noerth from applecross?

Looks like a grand old trip-could have met up if I'd known you were up

Sounds like a perfect shiter's holiday, tooling around in an old Rover. Great pics too!

Just brilliant - how much better can it get than one of the most stunning areas of the UK traversed in a £300 Rover.  This remains one of the only cars I'd happily drive for hours non-stop, even though the driver's seat must be a bit worn now it was always just so comfortable.  Endlessly preferable to the rock-hard seats of the modern cars and vans I've been doing big mileages in at work lately.

In a slightly odd coincidence, I was driving back from Edinburgh when I stopped off at PoL and would have passed you on the motorway, not that either of us would have noticed, as I got there not that long after you left.  Then you parked here:

post-4673-0-57093200-1429730334.jpg

...which is a few doors down from the office building I was working on all week.

Incidentally, and totally off-topic, I hope you stopped in Eteaket coffee shop which is very near where you're parked, absolutely superb food and tea.  Dainty little teacups (I felt very out of place going in there in grubby torn jeans and a hooded sweatshirt with plaster dust on it to get my breakfast) but they do massive, quite cheap bowls of absolutely top-notch porridge.

What a fantastic trip BJM. I'm so glad you took your camera. I'm also pleased to see someone has chosen a pic for the calendar thread; I couldn't have made my mind up. :)

Fantastic pictures..

It's a shame you didn't work for the Rover marketing department cica 1994 as Rover would have sold a shed load more motors ..

Your pictures look better than any marketing brochure, it makes me want to buy one.

I was tempted to, but I liked the mountain pass so much I decided to do it again!

Thanks! I think I would need to add a beige suited man in shades thoughtfully looking out into the distance to really nail the 1990s brochure look though.
