purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Well, the planned Beetle re-homing is now coming to fruition. This has been the plan for a good few months now and is almost sorted. My colleague is going to put a deposit down on a Hyundai i10 either today or tomorrow. So I should be getting the Beetle in a week or so. I forgot to take pics of the car and she has now left work, no worries though as some will be forthcoming. The Beetle is on an S plate but is actually a 2003 car. The plate was a 'private plate' and will stay with the car as she has moved on from all of that sort of thing. Mileage is 70,000 or so and she has had it from new. She will be a student nurse soon and I couldn't take the car for nothing so will be giving her some cash for it, around the 350 to 400 mark. Things that need doing: Bodywork: the N/S sill has a long dent in it and will need to be sorted. It was more extensive than I recalled but hey ho. The panel behind the drivers door has a shallow dent in it, no idea how it happened, but it should respond to a gentle pushing out. One of the electric door mirrors is not working, maybe a switch or a frayed wire. The seat adjuster handle on the passenger seat is adrift. The coolant temp light comes on despite it all being fine and dandy, methinks a new sensor is required. She's had the car checked out by a trustworthy mechanic very recently. Just needs a good clean and polish in addition to the above. Insurance is £105 fully comp. Happy days Vince70 1
Craig the Princess Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Gosh, hadn't realised these were in £400 territory, sounds like a bargain.Does it come with a flower in the dash?
Jim Bell Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Holy shitsnacks. Are they really this cheap now?Pics up when you get time chief.
Asimo Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I have seen many of these with sill damage, it must be something to do with the shape that encourages these driver errors. It is a shame because the bodywork on these seems to age really well. I know people take the piss out of these but I quite like them, even if the engine is in the wrong end.
Alan_Green Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 How come the insurance is so cheap for a 2003? £105 is classic insurance territory. Sounds like you have found a loophole. Will be doing a few test quotes myself later. Bamboocarman 1
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 Yeah, sill damage to varying degrees is fairly common. Design/driver error - who knows. There is a vase but it will be removed This was with Peter Best on a limited mileage policy. I have a classic policy with them already. Seems like a modern classic classification. It's all kosher and they have emailed me the quote. Classic car club helps too. Worth looking at for one that needs a tad of work. She was happy with the amount, a trade in would have realised a couple of hundred quid more from what she said but she didn't want to do that. Bamboocarman 1
EssDeeWon Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Crikey I didnt realise these were in three figure teritory, especially £400 with only 70k and one owner from new. Metallic blue, yellow, or black?
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 'Tis a black Beetle. I'd have liked the beige (Luna) version but what can you do.
dollywobbler Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 You know, it's amazing how much more interesting these become as the price premium wears off. When they were new, the only good thing about them was that you could laugh at how people had paid more than a Golf for a car that was less practical by a long way. WOULD CONSIDER. I'd keep the vase even. Bamboocarman, PiperCub and trigger 3
fordperv Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 That's a bargain right there, like I said on rr you should personalise it by going the complete opposite of scene
barefoot Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 ...you should personalise it by going the complete opposite of scene but would anyone know you'd done anything? fordperv 1
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 you should personalise it by going the complete opposite of scene Yes, I remember lol. Still puzzling on how to do that one I haz excitement about it tbh.
dave21478 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Nice. Pity new Mini prices arent dropping as far yet - I quite fancy a Cooper as a runnabout.

danthecapriman Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Sounds a bargain to me. Are you going to sell the private S plate on? If so it becomes even more of a bargain!
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 Ah, ok. Got it. The plate would only really appeal to someone with the same initials as my work colleague 'KRM'. It isn't that flashy. If it was 'H2' or something like that then I would be rather happy.
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 I have to now find a small pineapple sticker for the car. eddyramrod and Vince70 2
mrbenn Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Nice looking cars imho. One started up and shot past me the other night, sounded pretty good! Sounds like a barg at 400 notes.
trigger Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Echoing everyone else but that does sound well priced, I quite like them myself.
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 It is a bit 'mate's rates' but they are cheap irrespective. Looks like it is coming to me on the 18th! Bamboocarman 1
fordperv Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 but would anyone know you'd done anything? only us and were the only ones who count barefoot 1

I'd keep the vase even. That's exactly what I was thinking! It's surprising how much more interested I become in stuff I've previously rejected/dismissed when the price drops below a grand. Pillock Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I'd love a Beetle, they seem really airy inside which is a stark contrast to most cars that size with high waistlines, swoopy roofline and the visibility of an armoured car. I feel quite cramped in my Astra despite it being actually wider than the Isle of Wight
purplebargeken Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 When I drove it a year ago I was quite impressed by the spaciousness. Not entirely sure about rear seat spaciousness though. Admittedly this is not really an issue pour moi.
Parky Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Noice, echo the mega barg sentiments What engine? If its the 1.6 it's nice and easy to work on although the plug are a bit of an arse to get to!
Pillock Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I'd be surprised if it's less roomy than an Astra, which with me driving has a whole INCH of rear offside legroom.I think I just like the idea of shunning the flower stickers and eyebrows and using one as a car. They did a V5 which ticks the box of "weird engine" too.
