They're getting that way already, one round here sold recently for £3,000 I think.

Is it worth it? Probably not. Is that what they sell for these days? Probably, yes.

Jesus, please tell me you don't live round here ?

A mate of mine spent 3k on a 15k C reg on ten years ago which was salty at the time but even then, you couldn't buy good ones. 4k isn't really out of the way if its as good as it sounds, and you really want one.

I dont live round there.... I keep my MR2 in a lock up on your side of the water though.

Better ways of blowing £4k.

8x £500 rover 75's or stuck up some filthy prostitute.

Rover 75s and prostitutes are now inexorably linked in my mind now. Services provided: CIM, GFE, OWO, HGF (at discretion).

All I can say is that when my house was worth £50K an XR2 was worth about £500 - £1000. Now my house is 4 times increased and the XR2 is 4-8 times increased.

Good investment ? CBA TBH

I once was a member of the XR wankers club but I didn't have enough polish.

No, it's not worth it IMO.

It's just a late '80s Fiesta with some posh bolt-on toys. You could get at least two nicer* cars for that £4k.

Is it worth 4 grand?

In a world where a 2.0d base spec BMW X4 costs £37'000* and the shitiest new Fiesta over 10k, most certainly. It's an interesting old car that's fun to drive. Looked after, It will never lose value.

If I wanted one, I'd pay that.

*Seriously. I couldn't believe it either.

It'll get 4k easy, if it's in good nick.

Wow. A bone shaking XR2 with a dog-rough CVH, for just* four grand. Lovely.**

*HOW MUCH?!

**Each to their own, I have worthless crap, etc, etc, some gibberish about iPhones.

If it's in top nick, i'd say chuck £3-3.5k at it and you've doubled your money in a decade. People don't want to admit, but they are gonna sky rocket in value even more soon.

Posted

To me, no. It's not worth it, but only because I never thought the Mk2 XR2 was any good.

If it was a Mk1 XR2, yeah. £4k and rising for a nice one.

However, the Fast(er) Ford Popularity Premium* means there's more than enough demand to justify £4k if it is tidy.

*As opposed to scene 'tax', FFPP is based on supply and demand.

Isn't standard practice to offer a derisory amount for the car, said price to be paid this very evening, in a badly spelled, capitals only, instant message?

You'll not lose anything on that if it's a good one, OSF prices are unreal. My Capri's nigh on doubled in value in the last 18 months. Even though it's broken, there's still a guy wanting to give me vast sums of money for it every month.

Mind you, someone on PH just paid £3700 for a truly lovely 205GTi 1.9, and they were a whole world away from anything Ford made in the eighties (Cosseh apart).

Controversial; truth confuses the OSF brigade on occasion.

I'm a fan of old Fords but they made a lot of shit cars in the 80s.

My list of good 80s Fords isn't that long.

Mk1 XR2

Fiesta Supersport

Escort RS1600i

Capri 3.0S

Capri 2.8 injection

Cortina 2.0 GLS

Granada 2.8 injection (Mk2)

Sierra XR4x4

Sierra Sapphire* Cosworth

Sierra 4x4 Ghia V6 estate

RS200.

They're the ones that I consider to be the best of the 80s Fords. Most of the rest I wouldn't Thank you for. Other than the RS200 and Fizzy Supersport I've owned examples of 'em all, too. If only I'd shoved them in a nice warm barn.

*3dr Sierra shell is too floppy, Sapphire handles much better.

As good as some of those are ^^, IMO some of the bread and butter Fords of that period were very good as well - the 2.0 Pinto Sierra in standard GL form was a cracking car and so vastly better than the Cortina. They were closer to the E30 and 190E Merc than either BMW or Mercedes would like to admit. I thought the hatchback Granada was a great car too - I had a C plate Scorpio, tremendously comfy and quiet at speed and so much better on fuel than the old Mark 2. My Dad had a 2.8GL Estate on a V plate at the same time and the Mark 3 was a better car in most respects except perhaps styling.

I thought the Mark 3 XR2i was pretty average; yet I drove a few Mark 5 Escorts in 1991 and didn't think they deserved the drubbing the press gave them. It was just a plain 3/5 door hatchback that did it's job better than the previous version and was no worse than a Golf, Astra or Sunny etc.

Mind you, my hero status goes to the original Mondeo - what a superb bit of kit that was. A seriously good car.

Four bags is about 10 (ten!) S-Type Jags worth of the Cannock chod auctions variety.

Not sure whether I'd prefer a measly Fiesta of all things to that fleet.

You can even buy some real cars for 4k.

Currently a not even too shabby Turbo Bentley comes to mind.

You get less with Ford.

Ford gives you MOAR.

MK4 XR3i in 88' spec 'mfi' was one car I would have liked, but it never happened, and probably never will now because im not paying £4k for one.

I remember looking at these about 15 years ago, anything over 100k even with FSH was usually pretty knackered, and of course living in essex meant most had been messed about with.

I test drove two, and both should not have been anywhere near a public highway, despite the fact they both had 'long MOTs'
