Spanish tosser

I have done a purchase of a WBOD for the upcoming SNOKAOS.

Yes, I know I'm doing it wrong.

'91 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5TD Exceed.

700 of your GBP has got me the following spec.

2 tone JRG/BRG paintwork

7 leather seats

Dual zone digital air con (heating poor, cooling untested but probably not working)

Auto gearbox with annoying reverse beeper

Super select 4wd system (possibly working, dash lights for 4wd don't work)

Power sunroof

Electric folding CHROME door mirrors

Adjustable suspension hardness (lights working, no discernible difference in actual suspending)

Cruise control

It's a bit poor on starting and idle is all over the place suggesting some sort of fuel supply issue. I could probably double my money by selling if/when the first snow hits but I quite like it so may keep it.

Jobs completed so far include pulling the daft windbreak thing off the driver's door, so I can see out of junctions, and sorting out this abomination.

Clearly a previous owner REALLY wanted those tailgaters to know they were being held up by a PAJERO.

Foil peeled off and much better.

Jobs list:

Big service

Sort out fuel supply issue

Tweak injection pump to bring the 0-60 time back under a minute

Find a source of veg oil to soften the blow of 20mpg.

I had a 2.8 one of these, was impressed with it. Like you say, they're thirsty things though.

2.5 you say? Wear a baseball glove to catch the valvegear when you do finally make it rev.

My neighbour had a black one of these. It was his daily and he used to use it around his sons farm aswell. No matter what abuse he gave it, it just kept going and going. I know for a fact it had been on its side at least twice aswell! He had it years but I think it got written off in the end!

Yours looks like a nice one though, I bet it'll be great when/if the weather turns shitty. If it doesn't then do a bit of off roading!

Fuelling issue will be the pump input shaft seal. Easy enough job given the patience of a saint but fiddly as fook and some of the bolts are in very stupid places. The trader I did one for said "wasn't that bad was it, you could make a living doing those, some people charge loads..." As he handed over 40 quid. Nah, rather shove a badger up my arse unlubricated and die of anal TB. Same reason I don't change clutches on my back.

I had a 2.8 95 reg about 5yr ago.

Poor starting and running for the 1st 5mins was found to be the injector pump driveshaft front seal being worn and allowing air in overnight, and letting all the juice run back to the tank

Less than a Tenner for a new part :-P

A good 8hr job due to the way the engine bay is packed nice and tight :?

Hope the 2.5 is easier.....oh,yours will have a cambelt as well, not a chain like the 2.8

Ah it was a 2.8 I had the pleasure of, and yes it was a cheap part but an arse to sort. Some people apparently fit a small 12v fuel pump to "prime" the system before starting. In practice though it inevitably pukes derv all over the belt or into the sump.

According to Google Translate, it's either a noun meanting straw seller, or an adjective meaning 'someone who masturbates a lot', or 'plumber'.

Does Pajero really mean tosser in Spanish or is that an urban myth?

Yes its means wanker in Spanish, quite a few expats had Pajero's in my village in Spain when I lived over there, it summed most of them up quite well.

It's on Wikipedia and at least 1 online dictionary, which is good enough for me to consider it a PHAKT.

I'm led to believe the fuel pump seal issue is specific to the 2.8.

I have done a pump driveshaft seal on an XUD before so would be able to to tackle it myself if required.

What I'm expecting to find that the metal fuel lines are rotting through at the rear and letting in air, which is apparently a common problem.

The Pajero owners club approved manoeuvre is to replace them front to back with rubber hose cable tied to the old pipes.

Not sure about that myself, I may go nuts and replace the metal pipe with a metal pipe.

Posted

If you want to go veg, replacing the narrow metal pipes with a wide bore rubber pipe is the way to go.

I think these Pajeros look like massive pikey mobiles, but wouldn't say no to a mono-tone or black bumper UK spec Shogun equivalent.

It looks like a terrible disaster happened in the design office, then received managerial approval, because they just didn't give a shit anymore.

Well done!

Being a cheapskate, I replaced the rotten fuel pipes on my Range Rover with microbore central heating pipe from Wickes.

WBOD ... surely not, as has been said previously, floppy top RWD & V8 petrol are some of the ingredients for a proper winter machine.

This 4wd malarky and a solid roof is simply cheating, I bet it's even got a working heater.

Exactly what I did ten years ago with my Buick! :-D

I could quite fancy one of these things, in almost exactly the same spec, but it would have to have a car engine rather than tractor.  Having said that, they're all over Cyprus (other Mediterranean islands are available) as diesels, and popularity doesn't seem to suffer.

  • I've had a few MK2 Shoguns. Sold the latest one a week ago. Weirdly the petrol models seem to have better MPG than the diesels. And are less hassle. And are super silent. It can be really quite unpleasant sitting in a diesel when it is idling. Sorry.

There is a very good forum and a facebook spares page.

The reversing noise could just be the bulb with a built in buzzer. A lot have that.

These do look mega pikey, or maybe they did a few years back, really need a wanky 'wood look' steering wheel and a little notepad suckered to the windscreen for optimum pikey points.

Jeez. I drove a short wheelbase 2.5 auto and thought that was the slowest thing I'd ever encountered. A long wheelbase one must be even worse!

They're tough old things though.

Poor heater in a Jap grey import dizzler usually means HGF or worse in my experience.

FIL has a J-reg 2 door one which I occasionally get to borrow. I think its a 2.8 diesel, but could be a 2.5 - anyway, SWB auto. Has 3 suspension settings, I can't tell any difference between them. I usually drive it in RWD mode, which when driven at 50-60 mph on an undulating A-road its not too bad a place to be in.

It is a bit thirsty, £60 of pump diesel was enough to do 180 miles plus have about 1/4 tank left over afterwards. It also has a shocking turning circle, I came nanometers from ripping the side off a Rover 25 at some traffic lights as I underestimated its turning potential quite severely once.

It is white, so I pretend to be a UN peacekeeper and it's quite a bit of fun to drive. When I borrow it, my colleagues comment on it being 'the sort of thing he'd drive...' which I take as praise.

A mate had one die on him, the balance shaft belt snapped and took out the cam belt destroying the engine.

We used to have a J-reg 2.5 TD auto at work, which we used as a runabout until the cylinder head cracked. The way it felt and drove put me in mind of a Volvo 740 estate on stilts :)

Can't think of many higher compliments you could pay a 4x4 than that!

Most JDM autos seem to have the annoying beeper when the car is in reverse.  As well as an another annoying beeper if you leave the lights on, open the door with the key still in the ignition, etc. etc.

They can be seriously heavy on juice, neglect the timing belt swap at your peril on the later 3.2DID, the engines alone go for over £1500 on fleabay. For some reason they seem prone to pissing oil out, all that said though a lot of it is barn door engineering all simple.

This would be bad, bad times. There's no sign of coolant loss and the rear heater matrix seems to produce more heat than the front so I'm hoping a good flushing will sort it out.

A mate had one die on him, the balance shaft belt snapped and took out the cam belt destroying the engine.

I am planning on doing the cambelt and balance belt, once it's all running nicely.

I'm taking it to a rent a ramp place tomorrow to give it a service and have a good poke around underneath. Hopefully the service will improve on the mpg, I've done 200km on £50 which equates to around 14mpg
