Moderns: What Would You Have?

I can't think of any post-1995 car that I'd want to own.

Fixed that for you.

Nissan LEAF. Early ones are sub-£10k now. I wouldn't give up my 2CV though. That'd become my long distance machine I guess.

To be honest, although I did ask that question purely to see what sort of answers everyone would give, I honestly struggled too.

I've been into cars since I was knee high to a grasshopper and have liked and still do some cars that are now touching 25 years old, I still get excited seeing a mint mk5 Escort with original dealer plates on it for example, but I generally always have bought 3-4 year old cars of about £5-7K but usually always get bored after 6 - 9 months and trade in for something else, either that or the car gets written off but for the first time ever I'm coming to the end of a finance a agreement and will actually have a car with a trade in value of between £2-2.5K as a deposit (been bored of the car for ages but due to for the first time being unable to just change it due to getting my first flat etc) and getting 5-6K on finance over 3 years as I usually do and am really stuck what to get, since I've been on this forum and since growing up a bit and having other more important financial responsibilities like rent, council tax, bills etc my outlook has changed, I was thinking the other day and could think of some half decent cars to replace mine (diesel for mpg, decent poke, cheap tax, not French and rattly inside, cruise/Bluetooth/USB) but was imagining going to get a new £8/9K car and thinking about the financial responsibility of £180-200 a month on finance for 3 years, living with a car I'm fed up with, and just realised I couldn't bring myself to do it, there's not a car I like enough to do it, usually I think I like a car enough to do it but a few months later realise I don't, this time I don't even think that from the outset. I like cars and I dong want something ancient or something which is going to put me off my major interest or hobby so I'm now thinking of selling my car for £2.5K private and buying something else upto that value and if I get bored sell it and buy another up to that value, all my younger years a nice car was all I wanted and I didn't care about anything else, now I prefer a decent mobile, nice decent clothes, decent electrical for the house more. I've looked and and liked 2012 Leon 1.6CR TDi SE Copas, 2012 Ibiza 1.6 CR TDi Sport riders and 2011 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Titanium's and they are nice cars but like I say I'm thinking about it and just don't feel they justify the money when yeah I like them but don't really see myself in one. I think autoshite has turned me.

I want a white BMW X6M, so everyone will know I'm a total wanker without even needing to know me. £10k won't even buy the stupid ugly wheels I want though.

When the scrappage scheme was on I vaguely considered a Toyota IQ, though not seriously. I can't honestly say anything at all appeals now, simply not interested.

I sell cars for a living..... And i cant do it, i simply can not bring myself to buy a newish car, i have tried, and my boss is happy for me to use whatever i want or even buy something in for stock to use, but i cant do it, i did run a 60 plate outback for a few weeks...it was nice, but not as nice as my 53 plate one i paid 700 for a couple of years ago.... I also bought a c6, i thought it was my dream modern, i didnt get along with it..... Ah well, just cos i buy and sell em, doesn't mean i need to run em. :)

can you still buy a Citroen with proper suspension? i've got the inclination to get something like that next.

failing that, i suppose you must be able to get a big hyundia(?) or Kia thing. it'll be cheap, with loads of toys and reliable (and soul crushingly dull)

one thing i would not have is something from hun-land. i've driven loads of the damn things and hated them all!!

I've always liked the Fiat 500, but since they're just a posh Panda that holds its value better with all the same foibles (and some unique to the 500), I'd end up getting a Panda.

I'd have a mk4 Panda, but I'd like a break from Fiats for a little while otherwise I might break.

Other than that, a Yaris Hybrid or Leaf, they're hideous but I'd have one for the ECONOMIEZ.

If it wasn't my money, then an MG3.

Is the 5cyl Focus RS under £10k yet?

I could have a short but eventful life with the offspring of two of my folks cars...

Unlikely at three years old.

Four or five years old, probably.

Chrysler Sebring or Dodge Avenger,

All the depression of a modern but still makes you feel like you are turning left when the rest of the world is turning right.

May I have a Citroen C1 / Toyota Aygo / Peugeot 107, please? I like the low-speed handling and the willingness of the engine.

Blimey, I must be on my own on this but love all the autoshite usual suspects as I do there's plenty of moderns I would happily own that just fit the criteria:

Alfa Guilietta, Volvo S40, Skoda Yeti, Skoda Fabia VRS, Clio 200, Fiat 500, Fiat Panda,

Yes, you can still get a C5 with hydro, but only the range topping Exclusive. Problem is, hydro has become so compromised by trying to behave like normal suspension, that actually, a C5 with coil springs is a bloomin' comfortable old horse. They're bloody enormous though. Bigger than an XM - and they really feel it too.

Save yourself a fortune and just get a BX or XM instead. WCPGW?

I hate moderns, I wouldn't ever spend any money on one. I'd rather walk or use pubic transport, and I'm fat and lazy and can't stand other people's company so that shows my hatred of moderns.

In fact if someone was to give me a free modern car I'd strip it out and take up banger racing!

Having said all that I could be persuaded by an imported Ford Crown Vic before Ford kill them off, or maybe a Mustang, but I don't think you could buy a 3 year old one of either within the op's budget and then get it over here and road legal for that either so that's out.

AL MODERNS R SHIT

3 series BMW, diesel with a Harmon Kardon ICE install

SAAB 9-5, the last shape before SAAB went under.

Alfa 159/Brera

MG3/MG6

I'd most likely get distracted and buy something/several things random and older for considerably less though.

I see no point in spending £10k on a small economical car; I like to see more value for my money which means in the terms of the OP something large, petrol and 2 years and 11 months old.

Posted

I own a mk4 Mondeo 2.0 dizzler. I suppose I'm happy with it as being the best of a bad bunch.

I've ran all sorts of moderns over the last year and I'll save the results for when I update my cabbies corner thread later this month.

I do like modern and new cars and thought there would be loads but the 3 year rule is tough. I've seen a Skoda Octavia Petrol DSG Estate but the mileage was 75k. Might get a high spec petrol Focus in that budget. I think the Fabia VRs is a good shout. To be honest I'd rather save the £8k and keep my Saab, better spec,d than most cars I would consider in these rules. To get a nice* car in these rules the mileage would be similar to the 80k on it now.

I vote for a Honda Insight :)  Well, you knew I would as I've just bought one! Maybe mine wasn't in the OPs budget but they are available for that sort of dosh - when I was looking I saw one for 6K but that was a very first one (09) with 152,000 miles on the clock!

I really didn't want a modern boring car (wanted a Bentley - still do) but unfortunately, physical well being nessessitates a reliable auto. My criteria were: Auto, petrol (I hate diesels and the driving I do would kill one in weeks!) from a local reputable dealer in case of faults, long warranty, low miles, 4 doors so my crippled dog can get in the back and sit in comfort, and cheap to run.

I looked at EVERYTHING! There are bugger all small(ish) petrol autos to be had for sensible money. I even seriously considered a new C1/Aygo but to get a manual it was going to be £15 grand... and that for an automated manual, which is shit!  Everything is diesel. I originally wanted a Lexus IS300/GS300 but the nearest one for sale was a hundred miles away which is to far when it's got a problem.

Believe it or not, I like the Honda! Yes, all my mates take the piss out of me for having it as I'm supposed to be a Petrolhead and I see their point, but I need reliable/boring now. The Honda is a lot of things, but it ain't boring! It's a quirky little thing with loads of little idiosyncrasies that some would call, character! It's also cheap to run (zero road tax and I've filled it once since I've had it in four months!) .

However, as soon as I get my sorry arse into gear and sort out my life a bit, I will be back to interesting old(er) dollops.

Probably a Twizy, for local there and back (it's only 12 miles so batts should make the hills) to save wear and tear on real machinery and money on fuel and road tacks (the change would pay for battery rental, or you'd go to Norway and buy one which allows you to buy them). But this answer only applies in answer to this question. Otherwise the thought of having a machine which needs a laptop to tell it to allow the brakes to be serviced is sheer idiocy.

Obviously, this is imaginary. The thought of spending up to £10k on a car which is only going to depreciate is utterly barmy. Good old cars are just as reliable as good new ones, if they're serviced and maintained properly.

Posted

would 10k get me a Skoda Superb estate? Diesel automatic?

It might get you an early Mk2 one, but it'll be high miles if it's a half decent spec 2.0 TDi DSG.

A half decent spec Superb TDi DSG is around £25k new, and they hold value because it's the cabbie holy grail. They'll start to drop in value next year as the very oldest ones will be six years old and that's the age limit for cabs in some areas. Then there will all of a sudden be early 58 plate jobs around for £4k but with mad miles. Then the nicer ones will follow shortly after.

^ I've heard good things about Superbs so would try to stretch to one of those.

Or a Toycitroeugot C107Go and drive everywhere flat out.

Thinking, option B sounds like the most fun.
