Thought/suggetions, Shitefest 2015 or AS roadtrip

Yeah, but the trip's already been to Yorkshire, which is obviously just around the corner from the lake District. I reckon Scotland (Borders or Central belt my choice) or East Anglia, depending on who is willing to organise it.

As nice as Skye is it's an arse to get to.

Are you sure there aren't further considerations to take into account before breakfast?

It's easy to get to, almost empty and gorgeous roads, guaranteed overtaking of the few HGVs you come across and spell-binding once there. Just a few more hours driving. Trouble is, how many miles of clogged English motorways are between you and the border. That's the killer if you're in the South or East Anglia. I've done it in 8 hours in a loaded 2cv, back to Yorkshire.

Trouble being, spending a whole day in a car just getting somewhere. You'd have to see the bit from Glasgow onwards as part of the get-together.

And btw, the Lake District may only be 'round the corner' from Yorkshire, but it's more different than Kent and Cheshire, which are at different ends of England.

Now I'm a bit more soberer, I'd have to say Lake District (slightly reluctantly) over Scotland or France. Mainly to maximise the number of people who'd be able to afford to come along. May time should be before the main tourist season kicks off, making accommodation easier/cheaper. Maybe a campsite would have a back field we could camp in, rather than taking over the campsite and alienating the 'normal' folk in their caravans and Audi Q7s...

I'd like to go somewhere which is maybe 3 hours or so away but Glasgow is a good 7 hours / 400 miles away which is a long way for a weekend (I'm not hardcore like the SVM). Personally Midlands area or up to Yorkshire would be perfect for me really.

I'm going to throw an odd thought into the mix that takes some of the compromises proposed so far.

Southern Scotland, based somewhere near Dumfries and date it for when the RSAC rally is in the area. (this year it was in June).

Dumfries is roughly halfway between Birmingham and Inverness and is under 7 hours from the South coast.

For the Southerners we could always gather on the Thursday in the Midlands and convoy up to Scotchland on the Friday, hitting the borders for lunch.

I vote for somewhere very near Triggers house. As it's not too far for the lads in Scotland and France.

Dumfries would attract hundreds* of the irish contingent, too. Foriegn lands, but in sight of Sellafield.

Nice roads in the cairngorm area.

I've stayed in Nethy House bunkhouse in Nethy Bridge for much cheapness. It has a bar which can be stocked with a cask from the local hotel. A good sized car park.

Btw, I'm the type of knob that gets involved up to the point of it happening then doesn't turn up.

Bit of sideways thinking might be required if we want a party booking anywhere.  I suggest looking on the fringes rather than the main Lakes tourist-traps.  Don't forget there are industrial/commercial towns all along the coastline, where the tourists don't really go.

Further consideration: how about the Sellafield Visitor Centre?

Not a bad idea about SVC, except that it shut about 5 years ago. The site tours had to stop after 9/11, and it got increasingly fewer visitors over the following years.

How about Silloth? - just over the Solway Firth from Annan, and not far from Carlisle (so not far from the M6). There's an old airfield there with plenty of space for parking, and loads of caravan/camping sites nearby. Time it right and there's even an epically bleak Sunday market/car boot sale on the airfield during the warm-ish weather.

Ok here are the details of the mad option: Autoshite to the 24 Hours of Le mans

Drive to Dover on Thursday PM

Thursday night boat over the channel - About £80 per car with 2 or 4 passengers return

Friday through the night, drive to Le-mans avoiding peage - About 270 miles, will need 2 drivers per car, assume a 6 to 7 hour journey though google maps claims 5:30

Get to Le mans for breakfast and camp at Beausejour (near Porsche curves) E55 per person

Collapse for a while and supermarket run for food/drink/etc

Friday PM, get into town on tram for drivers parade, get into circuit for pit lane walk

General Entrance tickets are E47 per person

Saturday

10 AM Group C race

3 PM Main event starts

Sunday

3 PM main race over

Sunday evening those that want can race for the channel

else take it easy and drive back on Monday

Total cost per person from Dover onwards

2 per car - Ferry £40, Petrol £40, Camping and entrance £80, Food and Drink for 3 days £50 - Total £210

4 per car - Ferry £20, Petrol £20, Camping and entrance £80, Food and Drink for 3 days £50 - Total £170

Advantage is that you can get camping tickets now, ferry when you can afford, entrance when you like or on the day and are down to paying only for food, drink and petrol on the weekend. So the cost is spread over 6 months.

Any takers, do I open up an event thread for this?

ferries from portsmouth much newer more pleasant

not much more expensive and its only 100 miles to le mans instead of 220

bummage in tolls if you need them from calais also from caen - its not so bad 12 yo vs 35

had misfortune of that when not able to get pmouth boat to meet friends in tours :(

^ have to say that I've always fancied doing a Le Mans trip and I'd definitely be interested

I have just booked my Le Mans trip but won't be taking any shite unfortunately as the Rolls doesn't have a tow bar and we are taking a caravan. I think your pricing is a bit out mind the general admission tickets are 75 euro discounted for ACO members at 55. Beausejour isn't a very good site and rolling up Friday morning it will be almost full and a mile walk just to get to the track. The tickets went on sale last week and all the good sites sold out straight away most go to the ticket agents that stick a massive mark up on it. It is still worth it but not really an autoshite trip due to the costs we worked out it is going to be nearly grand for 3 of us to go for the week.

The costs have spread it seems.

cheap boat from Portsmouth £100 per car, £60 per person

cheap boat from Dover £80 for car with 4 people

There are Peage avoiding routes from Calais to Le mans as well

I'd love to do a Le Mans trip, but was thinking more of the classic the year after. If there's interest in a trip over next year I'd be interested, work permitting. I don't really think it's something to replace shitefest though.

Lemans is very nice and all that (must go one day) but it's not very Autoshite, is it? How about a trip to a grotty out of town cash and carry near Calais to pick up some cheap swil for Christmas?
