It's a bank holiday. It's raining. I'm up at 5.30AM. Yes, it's time for an exciting* collection!

Obligatory clock shot.

Currently waiting for the Barnstaple to Exeter train to get moving once the driver has finished telling everyone something important but unintelligible. How does a train on its first journey of the day manage to be so dirty inside?

At least it's empty. One carriage per passenger at the moment.

Long time between connecting trains in Exeter now, allows plenty of time for an underwhelming but expensive breakfast then off to the shop for a Parkers Car Price Guide and a copy of What Car magazine ready to do battle with the seller.

Trains on a Bank Holiday [in the rain.....] one of the most depressing experiences known to man............

Do not complain about the train being dirty, it's no worse than it was for the last trip yesterday.

And why had it fallen over during the night?

If this car is in Parkers Guide then surely it is much too new and non-obscure to be genuine shite.

Quite.

I got married on August Bank Holiday. It pissed it down royally.

I've been rumbled.

I'm not even sure the seller is offering a warranty or even free floor mats

You're pissed and lying down?

Never mind all that. WTF is that alarm clock all about?

Why would you want to collect some damp anyway? Mine gets delivered directly to my house for free.

Its been twelve hours. How long is the train journey?

That is a Sonic Bomb alarm clock, and they are FTW. The alarm "siren" is a hundred decibels or something. My ex had one. Guaranteed to scare the shit out of you.

Everything ok I trust, Phil?

That seat is ruining my arse but otherwise it's sweet. M6 was jammed up with festival goers and roadworks. That plus foul weather has made for a very slow journey! M5 nice and clear now though and the sun came out so could be a lot worse.

Another happy Billster Customerbob

Home at last, car is ideal and Billy couldn't be a nicer bloke. I'll do a proper update at some point, not that it's terribly interesting.

Nah, not too modern. I hope this means the properly modern Kia is getting the elbow.

Phil, I swear you have exactly the same taste in motors wot I do. A metallic blue Astina 323 is HOT TO TROT.

Thank you, Phil, and likewise. Pleasure to have met you, happy motoring!

I hope you have kept your receipt so that if you need to claim on the world famous* cavcraft warranty :)

Couple of days on and I'm starting to warm to the little Mazda.  I've only bought it as a temporary stop-gap car but it's ideal for now.

Haven't had any time to do anything except drive it since picking it up from Cavcraft Enterprises Ltd on Monday, my observations so far include:

1. It looks quite smart and tidy at night, less so in daylight due to a liberal amount of rattle-can splodges and overspray, scratches and dents.  A good wash and polish may help a bit but the scars give it character and help people to keep their distance from it.

2. It desperately needs 2 new tyres.  One rear is perished beyond hope, one front is totally worn out.  Remaining tyres have tread but strange, unknown brands

3. Engine is surprisingly powerful, likes to be revved, sounds quite good and is proving to be pretty economical.

4. It handles pretty well and is absurdly good for squealy-tyred roundabout shenanigans (see 2 and 3 above).  Lethal in the wet though.

Not bad at all for the rough equivalent to 2 month's payments on the C'eed which, yes, Joe and Philibusmo, you will be pleased to hear has been paid off early and sold back to the dealer.  This makes me happy - it was a very nice car, just not needed any more.

Driver's seat is bent and the base has collapsed - I can only assume one of the previous owners was an elephant, no idea how you bend a seat back sideways like that.  You do get used to it but it's hardly comfortable and the height adjuster's broken as well so it's stuck in the lowest position.  Since heavy traffic and foul weather jammed the motorways all the way from Chester to Bristol, it took 7 hours to get home instead of the expected 4.5 and it was not the most comfortable I've ever been, although you do get used to it.

The weirdest thing is the electric window switches.  They're all missing!  Nothing wrong with the windows, they work fine.  The passenger door just has empty holes with the cables lurking underneath, the driver's side has a pair of rather worn-out Mondeo (I think) window switches wedged in place of the originals.  They work so it's no drama, just really odd.

A visit to a local car breakers this weekend will hopefully produce a pair of less lethal tyres and, if I'm lucky, a decent seat and switch set.  I have to say I'm pretty pleased with it, a good-looking, relatively modern, uber-reliable hatchback with oodles of tax and MOT for next to nothing, what's not to like?

As yet I have not had to claim on the warranty, just as well really as the small print is really, really small and quite profane.

I have a Mazda 323 which is basically some kind of Fordification of the model. It looks vaguely like a Focus or something.

However, what you have there is a proper Mazda 323, they're great little cars and it looks as though you might have netted a good 'un.

Nice one :)
