Jim Bell Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Mrs Shatpez has decided she would like a Scirocco.Just had a peep on Epay. Seems values have soared somewhat. I remember pondering spending £500 on a decent one. Looks like their values are measures in THOOSAND POOND increments noawdays.Something else that I should have bought while they were cheap.
HillmanImp Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Still not exactly pricey. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1985-VOLKSWAGEN-SCIROCCO-GT-S-AUTO-RED-NO-RESERVE-/161380813268 Sold for £670 with test till next Feb. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1987-VOLKSWAGEN-SCIROCCO-GT-AUTO-RED-/261544026780 Sold for £420 (no mention of test though) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-VOLKSWAGEN-SCIROCCO-GT-BLUE-MK2-/191259440593?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2c87f375d1&nma=true&si=GdeLKYiiUo4I32Vu38iyzPj%252BSw4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Sold for £755 with test till January http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN-MK2-SCIROCCO-GT-AUTO-/111409772526?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item19f08a37ee Sold for £430
Cavcraft Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Pretty sure someone else on here mentioned something about Sciroccos recently and I did a quick ebay search to find results like the above. I looked inside one once and it was very much like a Golf Mk2 GTi. To be quite honest I can't think of a better reason not to buy one. Jim Bell and Bren 2
Jim Bell Posted August 4, 2014 Author Posted August 4, 2014 Shame on me for only checking current listings. Ohhh the shame. Ones you cant buy certainly do seem cheaper than ones currently for sale. Nice to know theres still bargains to be had though H.I.Cheers for that.
cort16 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 They're quite nice to drive but inside is pretty grim (like a golf) only more cramped
Dave_Q Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Prices have definitely gone up through. Mine looked like this one and cost £80 with a bit of T&T (in 2004).
CortinaDave Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I quite like these. One of the few semi interesting sporty old motors you can still get without a ludicrous price tag. Folk even seem to pay strong for XR3is now. Ten years ago a brick on the throttle and straight into the local docks was your best option as even the scrappies wanted paying to take them away! Leyland Lawrence 1
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I quite like them too. They're so very Eighties looking, I like that about them. Leyland Lawrence 1
HillmanImp Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I really liked my one which barefoot now has. I only paid £215 for it and sold it for £400 I think which is a right profit for me. Very capable cars. Would happily have another.
dollywobbler Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I always liked the rear styling but must also concur with Corsaviour overall. I'd rather have a Toyota Celica. overrun 1
Jim Bell Posted August 4, 2014 Author Posted August 4, 2014 Wonder if Barefoot is sick of it yet.......
drum Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 There was one up here on gumtree recently for £200 spears or reapers. When I phoned, it had gone. Damn, I knew these were going to sky rocket in price.
sporty-shite Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 They're bound to sky-rocket in price. I've had one and sold it cheap. Always happens. garethj 1
Pillock Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I bought a Storm for £400 and sold it for £400 a year later, back in 2007 or so. Thought I'd done well, since seen Storms nowhere near as nice as mine go for £1500+. I'd have another. Interior is more Mk1 Golf than Mk2 so a bit more honest. And pointy. Nice driving experience being so low down, the 1.8 goes well and it's got really low gearing so it takes off like a pigeon with a firework up its bum. Shift pattern is squiffy though so practise 1st-2nd before going out chav-baiting. They're one of the last well-made VWs, mine was a 1984 and had no welding, and needed only the front corners of the screen ticking where the sunroof drains had blocked.
barefoot Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 They're one of the last well-made VWs, mine was a 1984 and had no welding, and needed only the front corners of the screen ticking where the sunroof drains had blocked. They are actually built by Karmann. Wonder if Barefoot is sick of it yet....... Sadly Barry, he bloody loves it. Jim Bell and HillmanImp 2
HillmanImp Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Its very satisying to see a car you once owned go to someone who really does look after it well and appreciate it. Wilko220 and barefoot 2
Pillock Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 They are actually built by Karmann. Sadly Barry, he bloody loves it.I never said they weren't, I just said they were a VW and well built They've also got a decent following. Not as many bellends as on the Golf forums, seem to attract knowledgeable people instead.
HillmanImp Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 The Scirocco forum was very good when I used to go on there (for clarification, not because I went on there, its just I don't go there anymore so don't know what its like now). barefoot 1
skattrd Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I paid 650 for my current Scirocco back in erm, 2006(ish) which was not cheap for one, but it did have a rather good blue leather interior, and loads of nice bits fitted. It's not for sale btw, it accidentally passed an MOT a couple of months back, but there's a few bits I need to sort before taxing it and using it. As said they have a proper sports car driving position, a huge boot, but the back seat is a bit rubbish. They're considerably cheaper than equivalent mk1 Golfs that they're based on. If I was looking to buy one the first place I'd start is http://www.sciroccoregister.co.uk/carforum/viewforum.php?f=3Oh, and buy a fuel injected one (GTi, GTX, Scala post '88) more power and better fuel economy than a carb one drum, KruJoe and trigger 3
KruJoe Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 There was a free on on here last week, being given away by Trig's mate I think. Didn't look half bad either.
trigger Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 It was bought by a chap I work with, the last I heard was that he replaced a oil pressure switch and it's now running perfectly.
Pillock Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Jammy git!In my year of ownership, I had to replace an expansion tank cap. That's not a massive cost of ownership, even went balls-out and got a new one for £6
Jim Bell Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 Cheers for the information lads. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a decent one. Everyone feel free to post links to likely candidates in this thread if you happen to spot any for sale. All these pics of sciroccos is making the Mrs want one even moar.
skattrd Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Before buying one I'd get Mrs _peas to try driving one first if at all possible. Some may not like the driving position plus they do not have PAS, so a bit of effort is needed for low speed maneuvering (parking etc)
barefoot Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 The Scirocco forum was very good ... I don't go there anymore so don't know what its like now). It's an odd place, I only go on there when I need some obscure/difficult to find bits and as Scotty says, very good. I went to the National Rally a couple of years ago, folk were a bit stand off ish, but maybe that's because I had the seats folded and a dog in the back of mine whereas they were the sort of peeps who spent the day polishing. Curiously, my old motor with it's slightly dismal paint didn't attract any admiring glances but has outlived at least one of the show cars there, which although polished to buggery apparently rotted out underneath and has been broken & scrapped.
Jim Bell Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 ^ polishing causes rust. Fact. barefoot and inconsistant 2
laser wheels Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 This thread is making me want a Scirroco. CortinaDave, HillmanImp, Shep Shepherd and 2 others 5
EssDeeWon Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I wouldnt mind a Scala, there is a very tidy white G reg one near me, very very 80's and I cannot see anything really nice being sub grand.
