I am quite fond of the advisory on my BMW of 56 plate fame

'Sill covers fitted - unable to check sills'

It's a standard factory car with factory fitted side skirts

So do all e90 BMWs get this advisory?

My brother got an advisory saying 'exhaust noisy'

Re under trays etc, that's just the mot person covering their derriere. .

They cannot remove covers etc to inspect, so just note their presence

Been looking at a 1996 BMW E36, the seller sent me the latest copy of the MOT Cert with advisories, there is;

001. Headlamps misted up (no their not, clear as a bell no sign of any misting)

002. Rear number plate damaged. (No its not, reads clear as day)

003. Front number plate damaged. (As above)

And the plates have not been replaced because it still has the original Park Lane BMW plates on.

Emissions to low to get a reading. Never heard that one before.

I had one that said that the horn on a 740 was "partially ineffective" because only one of the two tones was sounding.

Fucking engine was knocking louder than the horn to be fair.

I had something like "inappropriate method of repair" on a (low pressure) hydraulic pipe on the BX this year. I had a pinhole on the operational return from the rear height corrector, so I cut and joined the pipe with rubber hose and fuel pipe clips. He was adamant it had to be a like for like repair, despite the fact it joins to a rubber pipe at the front...

You get the very same on Rover P6es all the time.

The tester who did the wheels look shit advisory should be careful . I was told that manually entered (ie not picked off a list) advisories are one of the things that Vosa keep an eye on .

Funny though . I once had an old mot done on a Skoda estelle with a britax rear fog light half full of water and got an advisory of " goldfish missing from rear foglamp "

When my van had new doors and a lot of paint, it stopped midway between the paintshop and the repairer for an MOT.

It got advisories for it's complete lack of windows but failed on having the doors held shut with masking tape.

Once took a hydractive Xantia (the one with loads more pipes and two or three more spheres) for a test and the guy almost wept when he saw all the piping. That car lasted about 6 years from purhase (MoT man ended up with an advisory to the effect that some pipes showed some corrosion but not serious, others were out of sight) and it only needed brakes, tyres, spheres and a set of glow plugs over 80,000 miles. Brilliant machine, finally lost out to cambelt roulette, as it was ticking over on the drive having being washed for the first time in ages. Even the Lucas pump ran happily on used veg, at 70% conc.

My sister's three cylinder corsa had "timing chain noisy" as an advisory.

Also in the news, night follows day and bear shits in the woods.

The Volvo 240 had advisories for 'bellypans fitted under engine bay' two years running when it had nothing of the sort. No 240 to my knowledge has any kind of lower engine pans or insulation fitted. It also got one for having a child seat, which I guess has something to do with them not being able to check the rear belts.

Are you sure? My 240 GLT estate had one (until it fell off)

I had a verbal advisory to book the Princess in with a different tester next time as "I'll do it if I have to, but I hate the bloody things."  Seemed fair to me.

i got this one on mine, i dont consider my rust proofing as heavily done, the tester did say he can feel and see that its solid and not rotten, but hes got to cover his behind so he popped this as an advisory

Took a car without a windscreen once years ago since paint was too new to refit but wanted to use it the next day - a Sunday. Was unsure whether or not it would pass - it did, but only when he'd made me refit the wipers. I told him he could sit in the car while testing the washers :-D , took them ages to fathom out what to do, in fact we had a cuppa in the office and all mulled it over. That was the days before BigBrovva so an advisory was a little like a scrawled Doctor's note.

Raffles the Gentleman Volvo had an advisory on its last test for low oil level.

Maybe some of them did, but on the two I had you could see the road down the sides of the engine.

Maybe it did in a previous life and someone removed it.

002 Passenger door mirror missing.

Really? 121s never had one fitted. In fact, a 1966 car doesn't need door mirrors at all.
Would the tester accept this? No. Would he after a call to VOSA? Yes, but in his words: "I still think you're wrong."

Another Volvo, this time a 480 Celebration, was failed on the front indicator clusters being 'clear instead of amber'.
Er, no. Celebrations all had clear indicator clusters with an amber bulb which flashed, er, amber. Tester insisted my mate change the clusters for the earlier orange type 'because those aftermarket (?) clusters are shit and illegal.'

Two Volvo related calls to VOSA from two different people in the space of a week! Who'd have thought?
