For the love of cars

I thought there would be more Ford bashing here. Thread doesn't deliver.

Overall I enjoyed it. Quite funny to see the Harrises all together and they seemed to enjoy the attention. I'm not going to profess to know them but I bought some crossflow bits off old man Ron in the late 90's and he gave me some advice on tuning my crossflow. He had quite a nice silver Mk1 Escort in progress under a cover in the garage. I didn't know they built engines back then - otherwise I doubt I'd have got mine built at Vulcan when I could have had it done by someone round the corner. But it was funny, we did all dress our Fords up the same in South London. There were a couple of lads round the corner with Mk2 Escorts and theirs were the same too.

As RichardMoss said, plenty of clichés about OSF owners and I'm reminded why I don't hang around with them :D

I wonder who they think is the target audience then.

For people not into cars, it's 45 minutes of yawning, for people into cars, it's too shallow.

So I suggest these shows are a combination of for the ones involved to make a living, to sell advertising blocks, and a bit of self-expression of the presenters.

Of all these classic car molesting shows I've seen so far yet, this is the best effort though, probably because I find Philip Glenister the most believable of the bunch, when it comes to genuine car enthusiasm. That, or he really is a damn good actor.

Strikes me that it'll appeal to the wannabe car nuts. You know the sort - say they like cars, watch Top Gear every week, but drive a diesel Audi and never look under the bonnet.

Still, I enjoyed it. Although, maybe Glenister is just a good actor...

Shhh, I'm going to be watching it on C4+1 in 45 minutes...must avoid this thread for fear of spoilers!

Well forty minutes in and we get the usual myth describing the Marina and Allegro as among the worst cars ever made. Even forty years later they can't help bashing the former British car industry!

They don't need to really, Derek Robinson finished it a treat really.

"It's been said that the Landrover is the 1st car seen by approx 1/3 of the worlds population

Yeah, probably because we were invading them at the time".......

brilliant...

A shame that the stickers from that L-R were lost. Some of them were almost as old as the car itself, and told another chapter of its life. Even the windscreen stickers were scraped off. There are plenty of boring old museum pieces about, I'm afraid this one adds to their numbers.

I liked it, It's good to watch a car program that isn't total shit.

Yeah it was OK. I liked the gentle pisstaking from Glenister.

The finished result was not my cup of tea but it could have been a lot worse. There are "restorers" a couple of whom were on there tonight who would have taken one look undernath and ordered a new chassis; ditto bulkhead, ditto any dinted panels. When I heard who was involved in the show that's what I was expecting but its still an old LR albeit a shiny one. That new galvanising looks awful to my eyes.

Interestingly the starting point was much the same as my own 80" which had been in a shed for 30 years, I paid £2000 not £6000 though, and it's the factory paint so no sad fucker can tell me it's the wrong shade of green (PHILS IS LOL)

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The programme tonight was once again quite enjoyable I thought, looks a decent series this and will try and watch the lot.

I quite enjoyed it and my missus even sat through the whole programme without moaning. Mind you we both like Land Rovers.

Posted

I enjoyed it apart from the green. It should have kept it's unusual colour scheme, especially as they kept going on about its unique history.

I'm not particularly a lover of Escorts or Landies, and I probably enjoyed both episodes more for it... perhaps it's nice to be spoon-fed some basic info on something I wouldn't normally search to read about.

I spent an enjoyable hour watching. Phils gentle mocking of 'enthusiasts' appealed to the Missus.

I agree with what's been said re the colour etc- it ended up a generic land rover series 1 and had its identity erased.

I thought it was excellent. Like the Escort episode it gets across to the moro....I mean public how and why they are significant.

Next week is a Triumph Snag that breaks down - can't wait!

I liked the appearance of the magic roof, at the end.

PG pisses me off, in this role and can he fuck, drive!

Agree about the green, even my wife thought it was too shiny. They should have taken the body work off, rebuilt the chassis/engine and put the body back untouched. This series one has more history than most and that's been lost.

Union Jack suit - snigger.

I lost interest when PG's narration drowned out the 'expert' taking about the combustion chamber, with some dumbed-down drivel. I had hoped that a program about something as specific as a series land rover might assume the viewer had at least a passing interest in cars and some prior knowledge of how they work. Obviously I expected too much.

Still, better than Celebrity Love Eggs.

Just finished watching it and although it's obvious Philip glenester doesn't give a crap and he can't drive it's now a bad program really, At least it isn't wheeler dealers

After hearing how good it was last week i watched it tonight, jesus that was crap,at least get someone who has an interest in cars

I quite liked it. In other shows they would have got to great lengths to make all the presenters look like driving demons.

Overall it is quite honest and definitely better than i thought it would be :)

Due to staying in a hotel on Sunday night, I could actually watch the Landy one as it was broadcast. Novel.

Glenister's attitude pissed me right off. Why does he have to belittle any interesting facts? It's a real shame, as the chap doing the work is enthusiastic and entertaining to watch (even if there's never enough coverage) but I also really like the fact that they represent the social side of cars so well.

But I have also watched an episode of Classic Car Rescue this week, which made me want to murder all cockneys and Canadians, and an episode of Car SOS, which restored my faith in humanity.

When I saw this advertised I thought yeh another program restoring popular classics, I would have liked to have seen some unloved classics brought into the limelight for a change.

The first one with the scrote had me amazed they would actually broadcast an ageing boy racer doing donuts on a main road with traffic passing, great role model that.

The landy one was alright but they don't show enough quality spanner time for me, too much time spent playing.

I know brewer isn't liked much here but I have to say WD is a better watch to while away 45mins

I can barely tolerate Brewer Garbaldy, but easily concede that WD is better. Edd's work is always covered at a nice enough level and on the 2CV episode, Brewer seemed utterly charmed by the 2CV. I can almost forgive him! Then he said 'hold aaaart yer aaaaand' and ruined it.
