Watch Fargo on 4. It's very good

Fargo is a brilliant film, especially if you like 1980s American chod. Burnt Umber Ciera, anyone? :)

I'm watching it now I've seen the Coen Brothers Film Which was good but the best film the Coen brothers did in my book is The Big Lebowski it's one of my all time favourites :)

Not at all bad I think.  Lot worse stuff around and a nice car.

Passing thought: Ford put a lot of money in racing and rallying.  The payback has been incredible.  40 years on and those cars are attracting so much attention that all the others aren't.

Looked a good restoration really, and more stuff on welding and so on that we normally see after all.  Of course, black and white plates on an Lreg?

But that's just pedantic....and they suited the colour so why not?

I actually enjoyed it. Seemed decent enough and PG seems to do a half decent job, still miss 'you're surrounded by armed bastards' though.

I'm kind of getting very tired of WD now and Car SOS is okaaay, but I prefer this.

I enjoyed it a lot. My Dad had one new in '73 and it's a pity he's not around to see this. He 'd agree entireley I suspect.

Me? thought it was alright

For those who have a passing interest in the Escort,it was a good quick skim over all the heritage the car's have

For the purists, they will hate all the glaring holes in the history

As for bashing the UK cars, to be fair it was only an ex-copper moaning about his Allegro/Marina patrol cars being up against the Fords

I've got it series linked so we'll see how it goes

Posted

Not sure I liked it much. Didn't see much of the restoration and the actor presenter didn't know when to stop acting. It's better than Britain's not got talent I suppose.

Posted

I enjoyed this. Fairly light viewing but good to see car culture being shown in a positive light on mainstream TV.

I'd have liked to have seen more of the restoration though - we didn't see any of the interior going in, did we? And I'm a sucker for an auction so would have liked to have seen it going under the hammer.

In case anyone's interested, I think it went for £23,600: http://www.coys.co.uk/past-auctions.php?auctionID=41

Now to hit the classifieds in search of Escort Mexicos...

Posted

I thought I'd have a quick peek when I came across it (we've got Sky here) As soon as I saw the Escort, I thought 'boooring' I rattled on through until the usual old BL bashing when I simply switched off.

Posted

Well spotted Mr Sheep, Those are the other cars that are featuring in the series too. I can't see £23600 being a massive profit after forking out £8000 for the shell and paying huge amounts of OSF tax for the parts.

As for BL bashing, I don't think were was any, It's a well known fact that the Marina TC wasn't very good at keeping up on the corners.

brewer wants to keep his trap shut as his progs are on a par with any crap featuring Bernie & lepu.

as said for a main stream show I think it was a very good effort .

I saw this was on last night but waited to see what the general view of it was on here first. Might give it a watch shortly.

Baz_Shitepeas is correct but I thought it was really good, most of the audience would have similar thoughts to Glenister when they saw a Mk 1 Escort  (if they indeed had a notion of what one is) so there's bound to be some spoon feeding. I actually thought it was quite good how they explained why the obvious changes/mods were not such a good idea. As for the Marina - at least they spoke to a bloke who had to drive one and didn't rely on heresay. Plus isn't the fact they are shit and unloved part of the appeal??

Having said all that I have had some insider info on next week's S1 Landy, fully expect to be getting riled up!  :-D

Did they do the usual Channel 4 thing of more than doubling the length of the programme by constant recapping/previewing and lingering "Ken Burns" shots?

Posted

I have just watched it and thought it was quite good. shame you cant jump the adverts on 4demand tho.

Posted

This show needs a short, chubby, faux leather jacket wearing mockney shouting 'olde aut yer hand sahn'

My bad, that's the other one.

Posted

Just watched it all and while not a bad program for people just interested in cars it was far too much scene for me.

The also waffle on far too much about it being a Mexico but the engine and suspension are all non standard, they might as well had a povo spec one in the end

attachicon.gifFord Escort Mk1 Panda Police Car Advert 1968.jpg

Well it was the fact that they stated something along the lines of "the police were using some of the worst cars ever made" and then showed a picture of a Marina and an Allegro police cars.

I agree about Marina on corners as I know someone who ended up in a ditch in a 1.8 Marina!

I enjoyed the program I just find comments like that unnecessary!

Didn't see it all (missed the start) but from what I saw I thought it was quite good.Hooning around an industrial estate and Wimbledom arena looked a lot of fun for those involved.

Loved the car, but I thought the show was just another generic wheeler dealers type thing. I can't watch WD because I HATE that fat twat Brewer. It was 'alright' but I would have preferred a more in depth approach... but I suppose 'we' are not the target audience.

Posted

I wonder who they think is the target audience then.

For people not into cars, it's 45 minutes of yawning, for people into cars, it's too shallow.

So I suggest these shows are a combination of for the ones involved to make a living, to sell advertising blocks, and a bit of self-expression of the presenters.

Of all these classic car molesting shows I've seen so far yet, this is the best effort though, probably because I find Philip Glenister the most believable of the bunch, when it comes to genuine car enthusiasm. That, or he really is a damn good actor.

on 4od its in 3 sections

apart from oh look at this when he was a the barn then the shots of the boxes of bits at his garage the first 15 mins wtf??

has it been shortened on 4od shouldnt it be an hour?

Posted

It wasn't bad. Shame there wasn't much resto action, but the car meets, burnouts etc and history lessons almost made up for it.

The police Mexico was awesome. Anyone else think the alternator was acting up, on it?

I loved that girl. :-)

Just watched this and I thought it was pretty entertaining, especially people's recollections if the car from the 70s. The police section was the best bit, particularly where the retired officer was genuinely surprised and delighted to see the genuine former patrol car. I thought Philip Glenister was a good choice of presenter as he didn't seem to be trying too hard. I'm looking forward to the Land Rover episode next!

I had to laugh when the Dibble said how shit the Marina was. I just knew the BL plughole sniffers would get all irate.

Result.

A bit cliched:  the Ford fans are all Sarf Lahndan and Essix Bhoys and the car thief a Scouser.

Cliched but accurate.  Go to any car meet anywhere in the UK and the Ford fans all shout a lot, dress like the Harrises, sound like extras from The Sweeney and behave similarly.  As for Scousers.......make up your own mind.

It was OK and I'll watch the rest of the series but I had to watch an episode of "Car SOS" afterwards in order to cleanse my soul :)

Saw a mate yesterday and this came up in conversation, he was approached to finish off the Land Rover resto when they got out of their depth.

I thought I recognised it in the adverts, turns out I did. The one they 'restored' belonged to a friend of mine previously, it was imported back from South Africa after a tour of the majority of the world. Still had African mud on it, but most importantly it was plastered in anti-apartheid stickers. Hands-down one of the most incredible things i've ever seen. What did they do? Shot blast it and paint it green. Fucking idiots.

Will be interested to see if any of that is mentioned next week...

Yours, Livid of Southend.
