Neither considered attractive at launch

Neither considered attractive today, either. Some things never change.

I saw these at the Haynes Museum.  3 solutions to the problem of transporting 2 people with minimal luggage. The Smart is huge!

My neighbour has a Massive Countryman - it’s bloody huge!

11mm wider than my fucking 3 series aparrently

The 2010-17 Countryman is almost exactly double the volume (11.6 v 5.7 m3) of the original mini. The current model is even bigger.

We had an AX Splash like this:

Note the loop in the back bumper so you can put it on your keyring.

Found this website. Took a minute to suss it out but it's fascinating

And example of the internet at its finest. What a wonderfully niche website.

Herbert Austin at the wheel of his 7 creation. The genius of the car was that it was a 'big car in miniature'.

Part designed at his house Lickey Grange, outside Longbridge, between 1921 and 1922 in the billiards room! House is still there now divided into flats.

Supposedly a 7 can be parked (weight permitting) on a full size billiard table because Herbert Austin used his table as a guide when drawing out the plans.

That’s not even the current Countryman which is  bigger still.

Not the same vehicles of course, but the contrast between the Tizwaz, sensibly sized Up and the other two really struck me.

No wonder it's hard to get in a parking space now

I did a rough calculation and the volume (of a box it would fit in, I didn’t work out the bit above the bonnet) of a current model Countryman, is twice as big as the original Austin.

I owned both of these at the same time, the difference was huge

It’s a topic on bbc breakfast as I type, particularly SUV’s they are talking about. Apparently in cities especially, people are parking them in disabled spots because they are larger.

I know that I'm comparing apples with oranges here. Is that a Mercedes ML Class?  I cannot even remember the original ones being that big. Even the bottom of the window lines come to the roof of my i10.

Out of curiosity, did a quick check on Wikipedia and it turns out the latest Mini Countryman is only half an inch shorter than the original Range Rover, and 6 inches longer in the wheelbase... 😲

I’ve posted this previously , but it is also twice the volume of the original Mini.
