If it ca't be fixed with a tin of snake oil shiz i'd leave it!!!!! I bet these things smoked like a bastard even when they were new.

Have you tried giving it a few bursts of glow plug before starting? Another possible issue is a leaky injector. You end up with a cylinder containing too much diese, which doesn't combust properly and generates much smoke.

I know someone who has a healthy Indenor 2.3 turbo in his shed if you are interested, he was going to stick it in a Sierra based kit car.

I had one of these years ago and they do smoke a fair bit on a cold start.  You can try advancing the injection timing and you can even do it yourself.

 

You mark the position of the the pump in relation to the engine, just make a scratch in the metal with something sharp.

 

Then you loosen the bolts and rotate the pump just 1/2 mm at a time.  One of the bolts is a bit hard to get to and you will need 1/4" socket, extensions and joints.

 

You should loosen the injector pipes whilst you move the pump and tighten everything up and try again.

 

As you advance the timing the diesel noise will get harsher but the smoke will reduce.  You are looking for a sweet spot in the middle where it isn't too bad.

If you go too far I don't think it's too good for the engine though.

 

If it is okay once warm you could just leave it alone, and just put Millers dieselclean in it which might help.

Personally I can't think of anything more sublime than an old Peugeot diesel clattering lumpily on startup, waking the neighbours and smoking out the whole street.

I would go with a slight air leak, air bubbles in the pump do make them splutter and smoke.

Next time its cold, switch the ignition on and prime it with the hand primer for a few seconds.

Then try starting it as usual,  if smokes less it's air in the fuel. 

My BX used to do it every morning till I changed some rusty fuel pipes.

That reg number definitely has Dollywobbler approval.

X-reg always looks good, even better with a K or two in there. I used to have a Renault 20 that was reg'd as YKO126X.

I would try new glow plugs, to. My old BX TD was smoky on startup if the plugs were less than 100%

I think these are same as some XUD where there is a cable from thermo housing to pump which operates a cold start......... apparently it alters the timing based on temp

My old fregate had a 504 indenor engine in it. There were loads on invoices for the whole fuel system being overhauled in France and it still smoked like a bastard in the mornings. I wouldn't worry too much "they all do that sir"

Thanks to all for the advice. in the end I lobbed some comma 'diesel magic' in the tank, changed the oil and pulled to cold start fast idle knob out more of a cold start, and im pleased to say its a lot better!

 

In other news I binned this aftermarket add on...

Which matches the driver's mirror now. The french language makes even a wing mirror sound cool. The paint cleaned up well afterwards.

 

Cleaning, cutting and polishing the paint has worked well and im suprised how decently the formerly matt and moss covered panels have come up...

Its been used as a daily and apart from being a now common colour it tends to draw glances, probably not always for the best reasons. Most people ask what make it is.

I sprayed some bilt hamber dynax s50 into the main underbody box sections today and had a better look underneath. Unwelded and in great condition. Its definitely one of those cars that gets better the closer you look.

 

And it has lived up to its reputation in Africa by being a bush taxi here too....

Most people ask what make it is.

 

 

 

What is wrong with people? Peugeots looked like this for about 20 years. This looks more like a Peugeot than current Peugeots. What do (normal) people go around paying attention to?

Re the n/s mirror these were an optional extra and if ordered, on a PDI, you had to drill out the holes for the captive nuts.

Whatever they've got plugged into their ears, probably filling them with some shit whiney-waily soundtrack.  They certainly pay exactly no attention to where they're going or what might be in their path.

 

And yes, agreed, it's looking better every time.

^^agreed...most people seem to be staring at little screens these days.   Gurt big lion on grille not a giveaway then?   Then again I must keep reminding myself not everybody a/ cares about stuff that I do or b/ has stalked this land for half a century.   Rant over, more importantly those mirrors are frogtastic, just like the ones on my old R4.   Only a shiter would care about these details in the face of what would constitute bigger issues to some people (eg. shiny paint).

Came up looking nice.

 

Gotta agree, the plate is good, contains all the digits of my Vauxhall, barring a 5- in fact, at first glance my brain went dyslexic and read it as XRU 853K. Top job.

Changed the manky old looking glow plugs in the hope of reducing further the start up mushroom cloud. The fuel system cleaner I ran through the tank helped, and pulling the cold start idle plunger out more have all helped to reduce but not eliminate it. The glow plugs make it a really on the button starter now, but some start up smog remains. I've decided it's just a feature of an old taxi like the NO SMOKING advice sticker and crumbling interior trim.

Midweek I had a karma fail on the 504 when I flashed to let someone out of a side turning followed by loss of all lights. Having a look round I saw someone had popped a massively over rated fuse into the lights circuit resulting in some of the main fuse box melting rather than the fuse blowing. I've repaired the fusebox and pre emptively given the rest of it and the relays a through service/ clean as it was so corroded and filth encrusted/ bodged I'm surprised I'd not have problems earlier. In the end I also replaced the complicated wiper/light stalk as that had been contributing to the trouble.

So apart from that its utter simplicity has meant no other problems. Its crying out for some TLC on the body though which will have to wait untill next year or earlier if I get hold of an alternative daily in the meanwhile.

Took old smokey down the road to the River Tamar on the Devon/ Cornwall border, to see my trusted old car bodywork man. Steve, who ive had work on various old cars i've owned over the years; he did the whole sucking of air through teeth thing and eyed up the utterly ruined rain gutters of the 504. Quite why they've dissolved so spectacularly is a mystery- google images provided pics of countless scrap 504 estates with little metal elsewhere but competely intact rain gutters.  As suspected, to do the job properly will require headlining removal, rear 1/4 window removal, windscreen removal (some dubious looking bits extending to the drivers a pillar and scuttle) and many hours work. Depressing, but ive known about it the whole time so its not exactly news. Im going to pencil it in mid next year and plan to go ahead then assuming it continues to provide reliable and economical transport.

 

Economic yes, its no HDI or XUD but this smokey old indenor xd2 can deliver reasonable consumption figures for its era. Local pottering has given 41MPG. Im going with the traffic flow but doing the usual stuff to maximise the MPG. Its lack of 5th bites into overall economy on the motorway, but on the undulating lanes of Devon this softly sprung old 504 is right at home.

Could the gutter damage have been due to those clamp-on roof racks? Roof racks were a common sight on big estate cars, the clamps were pretty brutal.

Enjoyed motoring about in this this weekend, It provides a nice contrast with the BX in many ways. Interesting to think that french production of the 504 was being run down when mine was built in 1982, the same year the bx was launched. The contrast between them is huge! The bx has a lovely floaty ride, thanks to minimad5 specifying the softest spheres when he had them replaced, yet the 504 closely matches how it absorbs sudden low speed irregularities.

 

Trying to decide at the mo what car to take to shitefest. Purely as a means of getting there, the bx wins as it will do it less expensively and faster. Lack of 5th in the 504 and a rev limited top speed of 80 MPH (It runs straight up to this though my ears and mechanical sympathy means I didnt stay there long, nor would i repeat it)

 

Hmmm decisions.....

Great photo there, my son just turned 1 and my wife got a picture if him standing in the drivers seat holding the wheel!

 

I'm liking this car a lot. I just took delivery of a white 1/18 scale 504 model on Saturday, saloon however.
