My 40th Birthday Present

In July 2012 I celebrated my 40th. My other half had been dropping hints for a while tha she had organised something, but would'nt tell me what. It turned out to be this -

Well for two days at least. I have always wanted one, and I really wanted to know what driving one was like. Suffice to say I was'nt disappointed. I had to make my way to Harrogate to pick the car up, I just left my vectra there rather that have wife drive that back as well

The drive back to Warrington was uneventful, I just kept an eye on the fuel and temperature. The driver of an Imprezza was'nt quite sure what he was behind driving through Harrogate, but backed off and gave me a respectable amount of room - TBH he probably could have eaten me. I was warned to be careful by the rep of the firm who hired the car out, he said it had caught a few people out who were careless with the gas pedal - it would swap ends quite easily.

Put the car on the drive once home to let it cool - the fans ran for so long I was worried that they would flatten the battery. My brother turned up and I took him for a quick spin.

The roads were damp, on leaving a roundabout I gave the gas a bit too much of a prod - the rear stepped out very easily. I had only just remarked to my brother how docile the car was, and that you would have to be a total gorilla to lose it. I nearly became a self fullfilling prophecy.

The car was a 1973 example with just under 100k on the clock. It had just had a paint job, and only the week before had required a new autobox - things very nearly fell through, although to the hire firms credit they offered a stag to use in the meantime FOC and said we could have the interceptor later. However, the car was returned in time, although evidence of the recent work was that it would'nt start in park.

The next day it was time for a run into North Wales - I wanted to head down the A494 to Lyn Brennig which is a man made lake. The car devoured the motoraways and enjoyed the A roads until we hit road works outside Ruthin - the temp almost got into the red on the gauge, so I pulled over and let it cool down.

This is not a car for shrinking violets - pedestrians and other motorists will stop what they are doing to see where the noise is coming from. I even had motorcyclists giving me the nod of approval, I actually enjoyed the attention. The noise truly is intoxicating - the CD player was unused, I elected to use the accelerator to give me my aural pleasure.

On twisties the car showed it' s age - I actually felt that the door handles were going to rub on the road at times. I had done a  driving course in a diesel mondeo on the same stretch of road, the mondeo covered ground quicker but that is'nt what the interceptor is about.

Sad to say, the car had to go back the next day - I was limited to 400 miles, I cannot remember how many miles I did, but I spent £140 in two days on fuel - my maths gave me a figure of 10mpg. Ouch!

I would have one in a heartbeat - everybody will look at you, and petrol station managers will love you. Maybe one day I will be a position to afford one.

Best way to enjoy an Interceptor, I reckon, what a terrific birthday gift.

What a fab present! Mrs T once spoke about hiring me a Jag Mk2 or Lotus Cortina for my birthday but there isn't anywhere local who hire them, which is a shame,

Fantastic, looks like a brill way to spent a couple of days.

Turn it into a holiday then Trig!

Reminds me of my 25th birthday. Old enough to hire shizzle like this! The lack of hair tells you how long ago this was...

It was bloody awesome. Spent two days thrashing it around The Cotswolds, giving it a boot full every time we left a village - which was often. Sure, the build quality was hopeless (it's an MG interior with random wood and the controls out of an LDV Pilot), the ride was quite horrendously bad and it was Japanese-spec in an odd colour, but it was an absolute hoot. Jumping from this back into my 2CV felt very odd.

The future Mrs Wobbler seemed to enjoy it too.

Superb! How long did the wife take to drop the bombshell that it was only on hire?

I've always wanted an Interceptor, even if only for a couple of days.  I mean always!  From the moment I saw one, and more importantly, heard one.

In Cyprus, the very first time I took my Capri to the big show at Episkopi, I was very lucky with my allocated parking spot...

Harrogate you say?

Yesterday I was zooming up Malham Cove Road in the 216 and we came up behind what could have been the very same Interceptor!

They were taking it really steady (maybe watching the temp guage, or the fuel go down). It pulled in to let me pass. It was lovely to see.
