quick late-night kettle update

So, t'other day I managed to get a few hours in on the 3-dr 214. I had the rare experience of having the current Ms_Bo11ox (known henceforth as Mrs Crab) on hand as an ASSISTANT!!! Hence why I am actually visible in a couple of the shots.

I had had big plans to try and repair my existing gearbox. But in fact, due to constantly struggling for time, i decided to just chuck in the replacement box from KruJoe's 'sawn-off'. It was a lovely evening and I decided to do the job outdoors, so started by sweeping all the gravel out the way:

To be honest despite there being two of us we were a bit lax on the photos. Heres Mrs crab giving the garage creeper a test drive:

Removing the box was pretty straightforward as I'd only done it a week or two beforehand.

Looks pretty sweet eh? The bodywork on this is pretty amazing to tell the truth, it seems to be completely unmolested!!! No rust or repairs. Check out these sills and arches!!!

Bloody hell, mintola arches!  I can't recall every seeing any that clean.  I could be interested when you come to sell Reg as I'm missing having an R8 to pootle about in.

Looks like a keeper that one! 12.9/10 grate thred!

Great save! That is such a clean straight R8 with arches that I can only dream of with the 220 ( Mind you that 3 door has had an easier time of things in general)

Looking fwd to seeing the SEI receiving the Bo11ox treatment!

Not a lot to report on the SEi but lets have a look at it anyway:

Fairly presentable at least eh? I havent even washed it or owt yet and it does have some clumps of moss here and there. Its not as mintola as the 3-dr but not a total shite heap either. Rear arches are present and correct at least

It does have odd wheels on but I have got all the originals, theyre in the boot. As per FUCKING USUAL theres no locking nut key though, I think I will be able to remove the nuts OK however or maybe just buy the proper tool like I did for the 25 GTi.

INterior is quite smart:

Panels are pretty straight:

The dopehead lad I got it off liked to get evey last mile out of his tyres i see:

P1070048.jpg

Doesnt look too good that does it, better have a close look at the suspension & see if summert is bent or something.

I tried to start it, but the immobiliser is playing up (I think) meaning it wouldnt even crank over. I dont think the fob is deactivating the immobiliser. The lad said when i picked it up, 'its ben sat for a years or so' but his daughter helpfully piped up '4 years you mean dad!!!!' so the battery could well be flat in the fob. If that doesnt bring owt I will take the 5AS box and the ECU out and send them off for testing/re-coding. The radiator is missing and the middle exhaust box is buggered but I think its worth investing a bit of effort in as it would be a lovely thing if it was all cleaned up and ship shape, and it doesnt seem to be horribly rotten. This one only has about 55k on too and I have got all the old MOT's which seem to back that up.

One of my gaffer's 416 Tourers has a peculiar start up procedure, key in, ignition on, then blip the unlock button on the fob before it'll start. Only happens on the 250k mile one, but it had an ECU at about 210k.

Posted

Looks like that one'll scrub up alright, too.

You probably know that these things can be a PITA when you change the car battery. Leave the window open in case it plays silly buggers and locks you out, and leave the key in "ignition on" position while you connect the new battery. If not, the horn will be blaring and it's immobilised.

When Phil_lip had the ex-Bo11ox 220, it failed it's test on a front bottom arm (so it could be that on this green one?)

Anyway, I sent Phil an arm from that breaker, that's why it was missing from the sawn-off when you got it.

Love it Bol! Is the 3 door in as good nick as that Croma you had with low miles ?

Posted

Are they the two-button fobs?

With a new battery in, as long as the fob already matches the car, you just hit one of the buttons five times and it resyncs. There isn't an easy way to use a fob from a different car, not like on other makes where you can teach the car a new set of codes.

There is some stuff on ebay where they send you a new fob, and an oofer-doofer to plug in the OBD port or something and it injects the new code. Sounds like witchcraft to me.

On the MG (a '97 job), if the immobiliser kicks in you get a bleeping noise from the dash and a light on, and it doesn't even crank.

Posted

Yeah thats whats happening here, although the bleeping noise sounds a bit like its in its death throes

Posted

Yeah, mine is a bit squeaky.

It does have quite a short timeout, if you unlock the door and then faff around doing your hair and whatever in the mirror before starting the engine it'll bleep at you. Lock, unlock on the plip and it'll work fine.

Also, (again on the MG but might apply) the standard aerial wire for the remote locking is all coiled up and the range is useless. Sometimes it appears that the remote isn't working when actually you need to be leaning right over the car to get it to work - I just stretched the wire out and taped it to a dashboard support, now works from a reasonable distance.

Did the sawn off come with a radiator that you could wang in?

Hang on... if it doesn't turn over, are you sure it's the fault of the immobiliser ? They usually cut the supply to ignition and/or fuel pump, rather than the starter circuit.

Granted, it could be yet another AR peculiarity, but there is far too much Honda influence in the R8 electrical system for that !

Posted

Yeah pretty sure the immobiliser stops the engine from cranking? I'm sure the 220 did.

Posted

It's that way with the 216 an'all. No cranking.

Posted

Same on the 25. As I found when the battery went flat. Changing the battery and mashing the buttons in panic resynced the fob though, happily. As others have said.

Posted

When the 220's knackered and undersized battery died while it was off the road it took out the immobiliser, I didn't realise until I put the new battery on but there is a reset procedure, something like turning the key to position II and holding the button for 5 seconds or something like that, worked a couple of times when the battery was disconnected.

Looking forward to seeing work start on the SEi, what's actually wrong with it other than the missing rad?

agree with this and I also extended my cable by 37.5cms (honestly) to extend the frequency by one complete wavelength and extend the fob operating range to 30-odd feet

good work, as ever sir.....

i too cannot wait to see you get that SEi running.

i always thought they were a classy motor, i so SOOOOO wanted one when they were new and i was doing me paper round....

I'm surprised that non of your R8s have shat their Cv joints. In taxi usage they were notorious for being a bi-annual purchase.

I thought those seats had had it, they've come up lovely! Can't be far off a MOT with that gearbox sorted?

Posted

For the first time in my life....... "I likez your Rover mate"

Posted

That is lovely Bol - did you jetwash the seats or just use some proprietary stuff from Halfords/Wilko, etc?

That interior still looks good today, a nice place to spend time

Posted

I just took the seats out, blasted them with a steam cleaner (which didnt do a lot beyond dampen the seats and soften up the ingrained muck) then I sprayed em with '1001' upholstery & carpet cleaner and scrubbed them with a stiff brush & hot water. then I cleaned off the 1001 with a tea towel & a bucket of warm water and let them dry for a couple of days. I got 4 buckets of minging black water out of them collectively though.
