Honey Badger Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 What causes the fire ring damage, is it the liners moving up or the head warping? Great update again Mr B
nigel bickle Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Mate, why? You've nowt to prove,! We all know you're a cuss-ed bugger
RoadworkUK Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Bollo, my hat is so far off it's expected to begin orbiting Saturn any minute now.

hairnet Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 id have rang the scrap man after seeing the head surface eek dugong and brickwall 2
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 6, 2014 Author Posted October 6, 2014 I think the fire ring damage is basically when the cooling system stops working, the steel fire rings concentrate heat in the area where they contact the head and melt themselves into the head surface a little. Elsewhere in the combustion chamber the aluminium quickly soaks away the heat to some extent and there is nothing concentrating a force on any one particular area, but the steel fire rings have to dissipate all their heat through a small area with a large force on it, which leads to localised overheating and meltage (I think). Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 Well, its started.... just spent £100 on a Payen gasket kit, bolts & stainless head saver shim. Watch this space! jonathan_dyane, Coprolalia, phil_lihp and 6 others 9
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Right - after being massively fucked about by amateur parts supplier* 'DMGRS' who, i would like to re-iterate, publicly suck massive sperm whale dong 3 times a day for a laugh, I have now got everything I need to put this back together - 0.5mm Skimmed head, stainless shim, Payen gasket, new head bolts, inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, cam seals and a new water pump, just need some oil and a filter which I will get on my way up the garage this weekend. Total cost: £DON'T ASK Coprolalia and Louise2cv 2
DVee8 Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Boll what are you going to do with this when complete?Sell it on or use it and flog the primera,do you still have the 220gti? My bad 25gti i knew that.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 I have no idea at all what i'm gonna do with it. I don't think i will enjoy driving it as much as i do the Primera so I'm not sure about that although i suppose I ought to experience a 75 for a while oughtn't I, I;ve never actually driven one. Maybe it could take over for a while, allowing me to do a few cosmetics on the Primera. I reckon my dad would love it, I could give it to him but then i'll have the problem of what to do with his super early R8 214. Maybe i'll just leave it lying about waiting for inspiration, like what i am doing with the 25 GTi
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 think the general verdict is 'not really' dugong 1
stuboy Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 i did enjoy driving my mates 75 diesel about for last 2 weeks very comfortable, but shes a heavy girl glad was a dieseal
KruJoe Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 my dad's super early R8 214 WOOT!Well pleased to hear he's continuing to enjoy that one. Is it still in good health? Yeah, I'd let Pops_Balls see how he gets on with the 75 for a bit, but I reckon he might miss the 214's great visibility and ease-of-parking. There's nowt easier to live with than R8 for local pottering about. Craig the Princess and RobT 2
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Yeah its still mint, no rust on it as its garaged all the time. Even after owning it for like 6 years or whatever, he tells me every time we mention the car, 'what a great car it is'. Always waltzes through the MOT with no bother. scruff, KruJoe, dollywobbler and 3 others 6
KruJoe Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 That's proof (if it were needed) that an old "K" Rover can be an brilliant motor. Lord Sterling and Craig the Princess 2

Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Probably one of my best ever buys that old 214. Cost £70, still going great guns 6 years later!!! Fatha_Nutsack is a massive fan, its the only car he's ever had with fuel injection!!!! He can't believe that it will start straight up after a fortnight in the garage.
KruJoe Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Blooming heck! Was that also a HGF victim when you bought it?
Lankytim Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Is it still sporting the Grandad_ in_ laws head from his borked 214? If so, it's out lived him! KruJoe 1
Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 16, 2014 Author Posted October 16, 2014 Certainly is!!!! Not a hint of any oil smoke on start up either. Engine is mint!!!
