Sell it to him anyway, and then help him do the mechanicals on it? He's going to need hands on experience if he's running an old vehicle, and it's a fantastic vehicle to begin with, simple construction.

How keen is he?

I'm not sure. You're right in principle, but I suspect I'd end up doing most of the work, and if I'm honest I'm not really up for that as I have enough projects of my own to sort out.

If he wants a Series I think he'd be better off with one that's up together and, initially at least, just needs maintenance.

109 Series 3 pick-up

I only had one 109" and that was a Safari re-engined with a SD1 V8 on a 'T' reg. It went well, stopped well but the chassis was crispy and the gearbox would jump out of 1st and 2nd all the time. Turning circle (like you say) was unreasonable and the steering incredibly heavy.
I whipped the overdrive out of that for my 88", sold the running V8 to some guy in the FreeAds and donated the rest to a local Landy Licker (aka tat collector) where it probably still is.
Not missed.

Finally found a 35mm print of the 88" - circa Winter 1999 on horse feed duties in Bedfordshire wearing 205/80/16s. Just back from a summer near Limoges using 235/85/16s which allowed more speed/less revs on the Autoroute.

Nice.

LWB Series are certainly practical, inasmuch that you can carry FA in an 88, but in every other way they're a total PITA. I can entirely understand why their values are so much lower.

MK2 son had a guntractor ex military s2a lwb, as his first road going car, on a 1979 'V' plate, because of it's release date.

I really liked it, it was great fun with the canvas off, but he had a lot of trouble electrically with it because it'd been bodge-converted from 24v.

It should really have had a new harness, but he preferred his swb V8, which he still has, so the LWB went 😕
