How about this bargainous beauty?

The running fault is likely down to a cracked rubber inlet manifold (although being a US import it may have the carb brace) or the bi-metallic strip electric choke thing going bad, they only seem to last about 20 years. Neither is massively expensive, and there are very few jobs on these scooters that qualifies as a bona-fide ballache.

If you fancy one, Mr_Q, a test ride on one of mine could be arranged for the next Powerhouse bash.

I'm thinking something a bit smaller really, but I do like the Helix, and was v.impressed by yours SA, particularly the dash.

The one from your linky was already on my watch list, but my scooter budget and storage is tied up in this piaggio which, in all honesty, is pretty fucked and unlikely to see the road again soon.

If I can get it vaguely running and back together I would deffo see a profit on the £45 I gave for it at least.

How about an Ariel 3?

Tell us about this Piaggio then, what's its problem?

It's a Y reg typhoon 50, typical story for one of these it was ridden by a 16 year old, partially disassembled as it had some running problem then left in his mum's garage for a year, sold to me for £45.

No V5 or keys, didn't even come with a reg plate but a friendly shiter found the reg for me via trade HPI so I can at least apply for a V5 and get a plate made up.

So currently, most of the plastics are off, I'm waiting for a new spark plug to turn up then I will have a go at getting it going. So far I have confirmed it is alive electrically and the engine turns over.

My original plan was to try and get it through an MOT and sell for $$$ but I think I will just try and get it running, reassemble and readvertise, they seem to go for OK money even in SPEARS OR REAPEARS condition.

1990 ZX10. tomcat ( I believe they are called)

They are quite heavy compared to more modern bikes, I've bump started one due to starter clutch problems

There's a water gallery on the head which corrodes, it's o rings can leak into the plug recesses causing misfire.

The exhaust generally blows from the joint by the foot peg

eccentric swing arm adjuster= potential, for excessive seizage

You can fit a zzr1100 engine in the same hole

They are no relation to zx10rs they are more like a gpz100rx

Went for a ride with the old man last night, headlight is a bit crap on his cb500t (70s one) and he was wondering about a better bulb. I saw on AS a week or so ago someone mentioning some bulbs that were night savers or something to that effect. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I bought a Harley (I just had a strange itch I had to scratch). Never been my cup of tea-never even ridden one before-but having two good mates pass away recently, I thought "fuck it, you never know what's in store. It's a 1994 1200 Sportster

Bloody hell, it is scary!! Not because the front brake doesn't quite do its job. And the high speed weave is quite disturbing, right on the brink of becoming out of control. Messing about with tyre pressures makes it much more pronounced, or less so, but not eradicated it.

Probably having around 100bhp instead of the standard bikes 54bhp probably doesn't help. Big valve heads, lumpy cams, forged pistons and a massive carb all goes towards the power increase.

It is nothing like any other bike I've owned or indeed ridden. The torque is such that it shoves you forward with a huge shove. Not sure if it's a keeper though, maybe I'll grow to like it, maybe the novelty and impracticality will wear off. It's only a sunny Sunday bike though, it's no commuter!

You are less likely to slide down the road on one of these than a GPZ1000RX. Cheap speed.

Had Harrison Billets (and EBC discs) on my 1996 Fireblade - replacement pads were just over £100!!! Not sure they were much better than the standard set up, but on the Harley, one definately would be, as even sticking my feet down doubles the braking efficiency. Don't really want a twin disc set up- the master cylinder is plenty big enough - will have to see if I can get a six piston caliper adapter plate to fit one.

Thanks Hairnet - once done PM me your details for payment etc.

Got one of these in 42L guise for sale if anyone wants one ( was on the bike for a month) - also with a universal Givi Monolock base plate - £190 or swap for what have you - ideally would like a small 50cc to bugger about with, but open to mad suggestions.

Braided hose & decent pads (I forget the make) transformed the single disc on Mrs Hooli's 883 from a pretty thing into a functional brake. Still got the original two pot calliper on too. It's not got 100bhp, but it has gone from 108mph indicated flat out with my chin on the tank to 125 & climbing uphill sat upright with a few tweaks... (oddly mpg is up by about 20% too)

Mine has the single piston caliper on it-alright for pottering around with, but no more. It seems that fitting the twin pot caliper on makes a big difference so will investigate that fact fully.

Eddie Honda, Amazingly ive located a handlebar fairing for my MZ which is the same one that you had on your ETZ :-) just got to wait for the guy to come back from holiday then get it bought :-)

Top banana Dan!

Hope you can seal the deal. It was very good for what it was without the bulk / ring-ding-ding-ding noise reflector properties of a full fairing (and all the fannying around involved when you need to do motor work).

Has the guy got a pair of Cravens for the rear handy? :D (I can't remember what model they were, but I know they are NOT Comets or Concords)

You can never be under-luggaged on a motorcycle.

Nice, why 2 blades can I ask?

The '92 as an investment/collector piece and the 96 (?) for actual riding?

Posted

I loved my 1996 (RRS) 'Blade - bought it with 75,000 miles on the clock to 110,000 when I sold it after I had been involved in a minor (for me) accident and just couldn't face doing the minor repairs on it.

However, the one thing I hated was how it cracked the bottom mount on the forks - not on one leg, but on both AND on one of the replacements I bought. Always worth checking when cleaning the bike.

Bit of both really, they both get used and are very original bar the exhaust systems. I got the foxeye recently as its very clean and will also be worth a few bob at some point (better than in the bank etc etc)

Aye, its one of the problems only recently been shouted about. Check both mine when I change tyres both good fortunately. 110k is a great number.

There is one on ebay atm with 90k, I was very tempted, my house is like a home for old fireblades!

2016-10-02%2010.48.32_zpsmbsx5q0w.jpg

I took part in a Mopedathon yesterday, and it was a bloody DISASTER.  As I'm 50% of the core team, I have to shoulder half the blame, we just weren't prepared.  We bought a broken Aprilia RS50 some months ago but thanks to half-arsedness it still wasn't running with less than 24 hours to go, so we had a mad dash to Hereford to buy a running Tomos (one of those late 80s jobs you could have bought from the Gratten catalogue).

That trip took all day so we had no time to test it.  Unsurprisingly, it didn't run properly when we got to the track... it was pissing out fuel, which turned out to be a stuck needle valve, and while fixing that the fuel tap snapped off.  This was eventually bodged with some pipe and cable ties and finally it ran - but it kept losing drive.  The best it could maintain was a fast walking pace, and as some of the other bikes must have been cracking more than 50mph, it was a liability.

We handed over the charity money and I did my 30 mins stint as a marshal, but then went home.  I'm done with mopeds, and motor racing team management.
