Bloody solalarm shite removed from Mrs Hooli's touring GSX1400 last night (obviously being a girly girl she needs two, one to use & one all custom painted for shows etc). It now starts & runs properly rather than screaming like it's getting raped by Bubba in the showers.

Bloody internal batt on the alarm had died totally so it wouldn't disarm, which made it rather hard to ride home from a mate's garage where it's been living for three years. Took just over an hour to do, used proper heat shrink & everything. It's neater than the professional install the alarm had.

Having got it's Rotax 650 single running from a beercan fuel tank I now need to change the engine oil. As a "previously registered overseas" pre-engine manufacture change non-HBOL twin carb single few things are easy.   I'm going for a 10W40 but are there differing  "car" and "bike" versions of this weight engine oil and if so what is the difference?

Bike-specific engine oils don't contain friction modifiers, this is because bike clutches run in the same oil (but not BMWs/Ducatis or other bikes with dry clutches) and reduced friction is clearly undesirable for the clutch plates. Car oils contain a raft of additives [often molybdenum based] to reduce friction for energy efficiency. Most bike oils will be JASO MA rated for use with wet clutches.

I assume the rotax unit has a wet clutch, so a bike-specific 10w40 is what you want, it tends to be dearer than generic car oils, but not glaringly so.

^^^^ This.

Years back, I threw some car Castrol Magnatec into a bike (needs must and that). The clutch slip was baaaaaaaad. ;)

Not really bikeshite or pushbike shite, but a bit of both. From the works bikeshed:

the oil thing

anything with separate gearboxes bmw guzzi no problem throw literally anything in them

j tin or european - bike only

although i used gtx in a hornet and it suffered no problems

That's one of the many many  problems, the same 5 valve Rotax 650 single was used in some BMWs so the "advice" of using any 10W40 in a BMW bike contradicts itself.

I've only just found out that BMW do a G310R with a whopping 313cc engine.

Smallest thing I think they done since the C15 or whatever that carport on wheels named after a computer cassette was.

Doh! It was the forgettable C1, not the Citroen van. Back shift has turned the grey matter to mush.

I have a couple of those kits at work for the lads to play with as they are a good little project. Whole kits are £60 brand new on eBay. Sadly they class as a moped/ motorbike depending on model so whoevers that is will be in the shit if they get caught, no registration, no tax, no mot, no insurance, no licence? No helmet. Stupid really as they only do about 20mph flat out with a following wind, I can my push bike up to 35mph on the big hill on they way home.

I have a dream trip idea about taking one of the kits (they would fit in a suitcase) and going to Vietnam, buying a pushbike and converting it in the hotel room then riding it the length of the country and then into Laos and through Cambodia.

Not sure who manufactured it (Acrybre Products?), but handy as the mirrors and indicators weren't attached to it. It came with the bike and went with the bike.

Some more pics to ID it.

The suspension on my old Honda CN (original 26YO Honda front, cheapo Chinese rear) has always been adequate at best, but this year's loaded-up run to Normandy rapidly degenerated into an undamped bounce-fest. So, in light of its sterling service over the years, my short arms eventually reached the bottom of my deep pockets and...

Back in the early 80s there was a really good mechanic at a Yamaha dealers up north that swore by MZs. Used to tune them quite a bit and then take great delight in giving us LC350 boys a bit of a seeing to. Bastard he was :)  He was also very adept with a set of files and could get the aforesaid LCs up to some very naughty speeds both MPH and engine - one in particular didn't even START to make power until the redline! Cranks never lasted long on that bike... wonder why!

I used to hassle him quite a bit to have a go on on his MZ but he never let anyone loose on it.

As mentioned previously, during the forum "event", the paralever bearings want doing on this R1100RT I have want doing.

Laser Tools come up trumps again with a socket with a hole in it along with a 12mm hex bit (just over £12 delivered, Ebay). Still waiting for my hot air gun to turn up as a may need to fry the Loctite to get the pins out, if not, I'll get some use out it plastic welding or something.

I picked this up from the Parcel Motel locker at 1.30am on Sunday morning - unlike my other DPD parcel which they tried to deliver when I was working Friday and I still haven't been able to get to the depot. At this rate I won't be able to get it until this Thursday.

In Mayo and galway this weekend

Lovely place for a ride. We have done it a couple of times now & really liked Cong.

Because of OMGLORRYKAOS, I handily ran out if hours next to the DPD depot, so walked on over to collect my parcel.

Now have s/h front rim, oil filter and other stuff from James Sherlock's. Just had to borrow some thin rope and tie it on the pillion seat and ride home with my knackers against the tank.

Just Amazon order to go and a dry day (ha!) and I'll get started.

Anyone got a link to day insurance for a bike, the online ones I've just tried bump it up to a years premium even if 2 days are specified?
