After thoroughly sifting through detritus of dealer part ex bins, Ebah, bumtree, and Autogaydar, I have FINALLY found something that I'm happy with for the Mrs.

The Brief was simple. Go and find something cheap, with a small power plant, thats cheap to insure/tax/fix/run, must have PAS (I know, no need, but it was an stipulation) and all with a budget of well under a thoosand poonds.

So off I went.
Micras, Clios, 205s (no pas in the t.u.s, *rolls eyes*), AXs, Corsas were all considered and then scrutinized.

Viewed some right pears, but no peaches. Untill.........................

Wheel trims, window handles, and plethora of glove box cubby holes kind of offset the OMGKEWL of the Digidash.

I'm happy with it though. Not full shite, but certainly has the povo credentials.

Nice 'n' clean, that is, should do the job well. And equipped with prolly the best wheel-trims of any modern. Twenty minutes with that parcel shelf should see it fixed*.

It's weird to think that this is knocking on 15 years old already.

Agreed on the wheel trims. Only BX flat faces beat those in my book.

Yeah, 15 years old, but still seems very new to me.

I never noticed them at all until recently, but now I see them EVERYWHERE.

I can't reccomended them highly enough really. They suffer from the same malady as Micras. I.e. they're so reliable and abusable that people just don't seem to service them. Just keep driving till something breaks.

I had the task of helping my sister in law sell her 2003 1.0 Yaris a few months back, I was surprised by how much I liked it, it was pretty nippy too for a 993cc and roomy, still not 100% convinced by the LCD speedo in the dash though.

That's a nice little thing, still looks modern too. How much dollar was it out of interest?

£700 with full test and three days tax.

They seem hard to buy at that kind of money (I found anyway) so I was happy to pass the cash at that.

Looks nice. I'd forgotten just how miserable the interiors were though. Fifty shades of DULL!

They are quite jolly to drive, though my only driving experience is jumping out of my Daewoo Matiz into one, so it felt like a bloomin' limo. Bit low geared perhaps, but depends how buzzy you like your engines.

Yes!

At home round the doors, but up at 70mph its straining a bit. As youd expect.

Up to the shops missions however are excellent adventures to persue in one.

Is this the kaleidoscope speedo version, they're well funky? They are great cars but the absolute and utter Toyotaness of the whole dashboard area must be occasionally tear inducing.

There is lots of Toyota in there. If you squeezed it, mixed the resulting seepage with warm water, then fed it to a blindfolded panel of expert judges, and asked them what it tasted of, they would undoubtably answer:

Tastes of dull grey Toyota interior seepage. With an overtone of economy.

Once had the rather amusing experience of a mate's (born & bred in Belfast) girlfriend buying one and asking me if I wanted to "come and see me Yaris" which in her broad NI accent sounded like something else entirely...

Great wee cars, I'd have one of those before a Micra. Is the bonnet on that one not shut right in the pics or has it had a wee dunt?

Hey! That's a smart little purchase vnd. I have driven a couple of these but I think they were slightly later facelift ones. Not bad little town cars to chuck around and certainly a lot more interesting to look than a Micra.

Btw, I've always wanted to ask, who is that in your avatar?

I didn't think the interior was dull.

Very smart indeed. I think that these early Yarises are built in Japan rather than France. I love those wheel trims too. 8)

It's Gilbert from The Gilbert show.

Quality humorous's.

Also, well done Peter. I thought the Gearstick looked more like a gas mask eating a dildo though.

These things never go wrong,in 12 years of Patrolling around i cant remember anything more serious than a flat tyre or battery.. :)

MUTHA colc used to have one........only vehicle I've ever felt car sick in when driving the bloody thing. I found peering down that coal hole to check the speedo very nausea inducing. Gearbox blew up as well [auto]

Passed my driving test 1st time :D . In a red Yaris 1.3 5dr back in 2001. My driving instructor originaly had a late 1.3 Starlet 3 dr also red on a R reg with 150,000 on it but after a few months of learing to drive he brought one the first Yaris 5dr brand new as he ordered it as soon as they came out. He was really pleased about it arriving. To me it was just another granny wagon like the starlet.

It drove nice enough but hated that lcd dash pod for the speedo idea and the sea of grey that went with it.

I managed to destory one of those wheel trims 3 weeks after he got it when a Fiesta RS Turbo pulled out on me and I'll stupidly swearved into the kerb trying to avoid when I should of just hit the brakes. My instructor was gutted and so was I but the following week he had a new one fitted. Saw him about four years later he still had it with a 120,000 I think he said on it!

I'm sure a trip to the breakers would find a replacement parcel shelf for a tenner or so. That does seam a good price for one of these too and as I said they drive ok and should offer Toyota reliabilty of old.

That car would probably cost around $5000 here in California!

With 200,000 miles and sun bleached paint

Hmmmmm. Maybe send a few containers of Yaris's's over, and then re-fill them full of ye olde mahoosive V8's for the return journey?

If that was an option I'd seriously consider it - unfortunately the US of A has some very strict import regulations - basically if it's under 25 years of age it's probably not even worth considering.

I wanted to import a Nissan Skyline 12 years ago and it would have cost me $25,000 just to get the car on the road!!!

*Boring fleet update*

I liked it so much I bought the company!

Well, I didnt actually.

But i did like the Yaris enough to take one on for myself on the side.

Its pretty grim when scrutinised, but quite average at a glance, if you dont pay much attention.

Previous owner was one of them women. A young one. Who wore bobbles and slides in her hair. She also collected pens and preffered Blue flavour Extra gum and plum flavour chapstick. And she had a smear test apointment in Jan.

Im not stalking her, she just left a lot of sh1t in the car.

I dont think the car has ever been cleaned, but on the plus side, I'm guessing its been crashed at least once a month from new.

Its reasonably random spec, with a radio (no c.d.), EW, Pas, povo mirrors, CL, rear wiper (absent) no AC, a spoiler thing and alloy wheels.

Drives lovely to be fair to it. Maybe idles a bit high and is long overdue a service.

Cant compain for £450 with a full test. So colour me enthused.

Is it just me, or is there not quite enough mid grey in that interior? Faultless purchasing choice, OP, but if only those insanely brilliant Japanese autofiends had had the courage to make the interior a bit more mid grey.

Grey is the beige of the naughties.

theyll all be raving about it in 2050 A.D.

You just wait and see.

Another top purchase if I do say so myself. :D

Grimalicious. Thanks to Peter's Pshops I can't stop seeing the faces he pointed out in the interior!

These are great if you have back-seat-driver friends as only the driver can see the speedo :)

Still looks in better nick than the one my mate's gf had.

I shudder to imagine what kind of clip that was in then!

They do take some abuse and keep on chugging.

Yaris! I had one for ages and really rated it. Pretty hilarious if driven spiritedly and not bad on the odd country road blat.

Also pretty unburstable, although the timing chain stretches at high miles and changing it isn't cheap.

That silver one looks urban warrior enough for people to avoid it :D
