Seen here in its natural habitat. Loitering near a watering hole, taking shelter between two larger beasts, and being fettled by a hi vizzed human.

Neither wet weather nor high winds trouble it greatly.

That's a cracking car for the money, I quite like the velour trim in these, much nicer to sit on than cold leather.

Posted

I'm with you on the velour, and I'm throughtly jealous of the car.

Still, its no Neon.

That's got a fabulous stance to it from the front three quarters. Looks very mean, like an enangered bouncer. Without any money.

I like that. I've always thought the XJ40 was a good looking car overlooked by the classic Jag nuts. I've always had a hankering for one but i know i would'nt/could'nt look after one in the way that one should.

Posted

The thought that you double it's value when you fill it with petrol has put me off in the past. However now I do a lot less miles than I used to I have put a Jag on my list of cars to think about. I think I prefer the model they did on about a C or D reg with the rectangular headlamps because I am a bit of a weirdo.

Oooooh! I feel a crisis coming on.....

Nice Jaaaaaag Ben, but thirsty? Nah, that'll do the right side of 18mpg if you treat it like an Aberdonian treats his wallet. :D

If I am ever passing I will pop in for a pint at your boozer/look at the cars in your lot/beat the shit out of some geezer who has shown you some sort of disrespect. Eazy bro.

Its not toooo bad on the dino-gravy John. Magic Trip Computer-ma-bob said 26.5MPGs on the run down from the very Highlands. A quarter tank posing around the council estates/kerb crawling through Boro, have got it down to 25.5 in live Computer-ma-bob terms.

If it stays above 20 over the remainder of the tank (1/4), I''ll be thrilled.

Youre welcome to a "shot" next time youre down the hill man, but it aint half low. Might need a block and a tackle to get you retrieved.

I used to get an average 25mpg out of an XJ8.

Thats good to hear!

I had a Volvo 340 1.4 variomatic that got 23mpg if I was VERY carefull.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the Jag!

That 'small car' Toyota is bigger than your 'big car' Jaguar!

Indeed. If I parked a Mini Countryman (or whatever its called) near it, the "Massive" Jag would be pulled into its gravity field, where it would orbit in perpetuity. Unless the Mini strayed close to an even larger car.

Fabulous old thing!

I've had a 3.2 litre XJ40 for a long long time now and it has been a wonderful car. I genuinely love it. They are very underrated; I love the look and feel of them - like nothing else really. Lots of people seem to think the XJ40 is unreliable and beset with electrical problems - I even see that myth repeated on here, but it is a myth for all but the first cars with the digital dash. Late cars like yours are pretty good for everything but rust. Rust aside, I have found mine cheap to run over the years. It never goes wrong and I get 22-23 mpg running round, with 27/28-ish on a run, which is decent for a big car. Forum support is pretty good - I'd recommend joining http://www.xj40.com and Jag-Lovers http://www.jag-lovers.org/ . Both sites have lots of information and knowledge, xj40.com has quite a lot of members who are running their Jag on a tight budget, which is useful I think.

Ha yes! - That's this model! The rectangular headlights were fitted to the higher spec Sovereign and Daimler versions of the XJ40 - the XJ6 got the four round lights. I prefer the rectangular 'Fishtank' headlights too. :D

Here's mine (also a 1992) with Fishtanks.

Cheers fella. Ive already signed up on XJ40.com. Shall check out jaglovers too.

They really are lovely cars. Everyone should have at least one.

Posted

And so cheap for what you get. Yours was a bargain even by XJ40 standards!! :D

There are several Shiteists on XJ40.com - I was introduced to Autoshite by China Tom.

I'm getting 18-22 MPG from the X type, which I was disappointed with, until I checked the average speed of my most frequent trip - 19MPH!

Top purchase squire!

Anyone know if these fit in a standard sized single garage? If so, it's on my list of cars to try next year :)

They fit in a standard sized Tescos parking plot. With room to get out both sides, if that's any help?

It will, but it is fairly tight - particularly if you have to go in at an angle.

Dimensions from handbook are:

Width including mirrors - 2015mm / 79.4 inches

Length - 4988mm / 196.5 inches

Luckily, the mirrors are very strong and springy and it takes an awful lot to damage them. They don't mark because they're chrome.

Cheers. Or I could just park it in the communal bays to piss off the neighbours!

Those MPG figures aren't too bad either. I'm getting around mid-20s in my E30 and I'd wager the Jag is a more pleasant way to burn up fuel.

They're surprisingly good, provided you don't thrash them. Strangely, the 4 litre uses very little more fuel than the 3.2. I had an X-Type (2.1 V6) as well at one time - that was only slightly more economical and a lesser car in every other way.

I've been getting an astonishingly dreadful 10.9 mpg from my XJR lately, but it's all been city traffic stop start type stuff.

It'll do an easy 24 ish mpg on a run, but it's no fan of my 5 mile each way commute. Poor thing is always still trying to warm up. It is an awesome piece of kit. Every time I drive it I think "I'll chuck a load of money at this and keep it", but don't use it enough to justify that. Catch 22.

If anyone is considering a Jaaaaaaag though, do it. Get the best one you can afford and you'll love it. Mine, like Mr Rustbucket's has been very reliable indeed. I love it, but need to get some rear shocks very shortly.... they're not cheap for the XJR as they're Billy Stein's finest bobble reducers on the R.

Nice motor, I have happy memories in smoking about in a 'K' plate 3.2 for couple of weeks several years ago while I had it up for sale on behalf of a friend, loved every minute of it.

Well due to the circumstances that always change just when you dont want them to, the Jaaaaaag will now have to be sold.

Looking to downgrade to a small engined car with PAS for the feeble missus.

I purchased the car not too long agao from Kinkersaab and it was piloted back from Aberdeen to Tyneside without incident.

Since then it has had new Headlight bulbs, as safety is EVERYONES responsibility.

Details:

Model: Jaguar XJ6 (XJ40)

Year: 1993

Mileage: 88k + as I'm enjoying it regularly.

Tax: 08/13

MOT: 16/04/13

Issues of note:

Power ariel non functional.

Interior clock intermittent.

Surface rust begining on front wings.

One rear door lock not operation from central locking. Pulling the knob up gives you more exersize and counts as one of your 5 a day.

One front corner of the plastic lower vallence has seen a knock. No visable damage to the exterior, but one of the securing screw holes is "snapped" so this corner is being overseen, governed and protected by Securatron! God of the cable-ties. Securatron is strong and secure (its how he got his name) and can not be defeated by conventional means. However, there is a visible gap at this edge of the vallence, as can be seen in the pics. Securatron is strong, but he is not perfect.

Brakes: Well, they stop on the button. Very strong and your eyes popping out of your head is more likely than you crashing into something under breaking. BUT the PAD LOW warning light illuminates under breaking, so either non OEM pads without low warning sensors have been fitted, or the PAD LOW awooga warning light is just very ever-zelous.

Good points:

Other than the auto ariel and one rear central locking point, everything works!

Enigine is a cherry. Rated 200bhp,. Uses no oil/water, blows no smoke, no bangs/knocks, grumbles or complaints. Oil pressure is spot on.

Box opperates as it should and kickdown will knock your hat off.

Interior is immaculate. Thick carpets/pus overmats. Usual Jag refinements and all is in immaculate condition.

Comes on very expensive winter tyres. Good for the winter. and its winter!

New Battery. 3 year warranty.

Comes with lots of toys as you would expect:

Power steering.

Power windows.

Power heated mirrors.

Power adjustable seats.

Rear dimming rear reading lights on back of front seats.

Boot opener located in glove box.

lit vanity mirrors on sun visors and flip up vanity mirror in glove box.

Digital trip computer showing live MPG, Trip distance, average speed, average MPG, Range, Fuel used, Fuel remaining etc etc.

Jaguar security system with tow fobs (plus two keys).

Lots of wood!

High quality period origonal I.C.E. Radio/tape plaver.

Comes with all origonal handbooks, manuals, service history, Haynes etc.

Car is currently returning 20.4 Mpgs on al local driving and 33 Mpgs on the motorway at 70mph. Thats honest pen and paper maths checking the trip computer (which is right), not vauge boasts.

Its a good solid and honest Tank of a car that picks up its skirts when needed, and is a thoroughly nice place to be.

Price - What I paid £550.

If theres no interest at that, I'll stick a fresh MOT on and it will be away to ebay.

ALSO INTERSTED IN SWAPS FOR SMALL ENGINED CAR WITH PAS!

Get thee behind me, Satan. Somebody buy this quick so I can stop thinking about how I'd fetch it, where I'd keep it, when I'd drive it etc.

GLWTS - that's a fantastic vehicle for so little money.
