Hell, thats tiny. I used to car pool with a girl who had one of those (in my younger and slimmer days).

 I've just been looking through the MOT history, it's only ever failed it's mot twice in it's life, and that was last year for "Offside Outer Front constant velocity joint gaiter insecurely mounted to its housing" and the exhaust the year before!

That's from a Daihatsu Charade, and it's later. All small Japanese cars are the same to you.

Mate of mine ran one of those Charade diesel things for years. He could happily and easily have bought a car for £50k without flinching, but he passed his test in the Charade and 'it works, costs fuck all to run and hasn't died yet'.

It was replaced by a new RS6 Avant.

I tip my hat to you Mr. Trig, sir. That is one hot peice of shite. I love it and I now have severe Alto envy...

By the way, that's a local Ipswich car too.

Great find.

I remember in my school days there used to be a blue Alto with a black vinyl roof regularly outside the school;brings back memories

Glad you like it mate, you should be seeing more of it as Hannah will be using it for work!, and your quite right about it being a Ipswich car, here's it's dealer sticker still in the rear window.

Top purchase, Trig!

I suppose it's got a belt driven camshaft so might be worth changing the cambelt at the same time? Do some research to find how to line up marks on crank pulley and cam pulley and once you've got it all apart it should be a doddle.

My old Cappuccino had a 3 cylinder motor and it was a nice noise, I've also had 2 Whizzkids with the big powerful 970cc engine and they're very perky to drive. I love Suzukis

That is bloody lovely young master Trigger, top save and utterly shitetastic. I put you, the turkey hat, that jumper and the Alto forward for next December's calendar pic... ?!

When the 2014 calendar thread is started that better be in it.

Stick it in top gear and get someone to stand on the brakes?

If you can't get an impact driver on it, I've had good experiences of using a long bar and using something to push the socket in place (so your assistant doesn't have to be too close to proceedings. We used a broom) then try and start the engine. Take the leads off though as you don't actually want it to start! That was on my BX. Trying to stand on the brakes and leave it in gear still left too much play.

Swift forum have claimed using a 'stepped' woodruff key, advancing the camshaft 1/2 a belt tooth, gives performance benefit...

Do a search on it!

That is awesome, it looks a sweet little thing (the car, not Trig's Xmas outfit  ). Well done for saving it and good luck with fixing the HGF, I can't remember seeing one of these for yonks.

Cheers guys and thanks for the cambelt guide too Andy, although that does look a bit scary and above my head. I spent a spare hour this morning running a hoover over the interior, It's came up really well, better then I expected, the seats even still have some of the original yellow plastic from when new on them, The AM radio doesn't work but there's some fairly new wiring about under the dash so I think it's been messed with, I've removed the glovebox to look but that's all the time I had today.
