Missed that as it didnt say shitefest in title

Honest opinions on autoshite, so far ive read this whole thread and a very lot of good points from all of the posters,

What i like is the very many varied threads, espesially the ebay thread with the witty make you laugh coments :D they really do brighten up your day. the spotted threads are great but i have to admit ive not replied to thank any of the posters so Thanks to all spotters for the wonderfull pics

And now onto the things i really dont like about this forum, its the amount of slagging we see,

so what have i have learnt other than the fact that i cant spell or punctuate correctly and some people take great pleasure in letting it be known, i am not a teacher or banker or hold some other important possition, so i dont need to be perfect

That all BMW drivers are wankers

That all audi drivers are wankers

That 4x4 drivers are wankers,

That bikers are wankers

That truck drivers are wankers

That the young who take time and money to modify their cars in a taste that doesnt suit us are wankers

That council house dwellers are wankers or scroungers ( truthfully how many on here live in council houses or worse still ex council houses )

That disabled people are twats and scroungers

That car salesmen are tossers ( i have been guilty on this one )

That all vauxhalls are shite

That when selling an item its ok to call your whole customer base the great unwashed

That ebay is full of wankers or tossers or both ( this one may be true )

That tanker drivers are greedy

That people who drive all cars in the snow are tossers ( other than the person complaining that is )

That people who listen to the tv and do as they are told are tossers

no doubt ive missed plenty as my memory isnt that great,

but that does give some cause for thought, are all members on here so intolerant to others or dare i say it is it the green monster

Now this is only my veiws on what ive read here, it just seems like nearly every thread has some form of bitching going on.

Maybe someone could start a regional thread for whatever area they're in and try and organise a local meeting once or twice or year?

Or we can meet at national events, like the NEC classic car show, Chomnomnomly and stuff like that.

Having said that if anyone fancies a meet up at McDonalds Leyland tomorrow evening.....

Oh God, aye, it's just some can't always travel that far (like anyone with a Vauxhall*) and it might mean people meeting in 'real life' and sort of enjoying twittering on about crap cars etc.

Garbaldy does have a bloody good point. It can seem endless threads end in arguments (I'm as guilty as anone of this) so it's unsurprising people get pissed off.

Just looked through that w*nker list and it looks like me and members of my family qualify more than once......................where's the door?

That all BMW drivers are wankers - Owned 3 in the past

That all audi drivers are wankers - 100 Avant years ago...

That 4x4 drivers are wankers - Stagea is 4wd

That bikers are wankers

That truck drivers are wankers

That the young who take time and money to modify their cars in a taste that doesnt suit us are wankers - go to weekly meets with my son and his mates who do

That council house dwellers are wankers or scroungers ( truthfully how many on here live in council houses or worse still ex council houses ) - live in an Ex-council house all I could afford after the divorce that cost me my des-res with 3 car garage

That disabled people are twats and scroungers - that will be my wife

That car salesmen are tossers ( i have been guilty on this one ) - my stepdaughter and her partner sell tham

That all vauxhalls are shite -loved my chevette and the Mk2 Cavaliers, did drive a Vectra at work but we got an Insignia last week

That when selling an item its ok to call your whole customer base the great unwashed

That ebay is full of wankers or tossers or both ( this one may be true )

That tanker drivers are greedy

That people who drive all cars in the snow are tossers ( other than the person complaining that is ) - sorry but I have to get to work

That people who listen to the tv and do as they are told are tossers - I watch the news and was brought up to respect authority

Guess I really don't fit in.....................

Crap, only managed a miserable score of 1 on that list, need to get out more.

Rather have some debate than a Retro Rides "if you've got nothing nice to say don't say anything" policy, which would result in endless platitudes for half arsed/dangerous/illegal spanner work

It is the place where it is cool to be uncool!

Strong contender for 'quote of the year' and sums the place up perfectly.

Im not so sure its so "uncool" anymore.

I think it may be a generation thing, stuff that was once uncool shite is seen as very cool because its actually very different.

My 20 year old daughter really wanted an Allegro for her first car but has ended up with a 20 year old little Starlet, she adores it.

A friend of hers has just bought a new shape Fiesta and my girl wouldnt swap hers for that, ever!!

Maybe the younger generation sees the shite we love as very cool where as the rest of us see it as just shite, albeit shite that you love.

Horror of horrors, maybe we iz really Kool............

Amen!

I usually feel like an interloper and am surprised I don't get the "piss off troll" treatment. Love it here though and often make myself ill laughing.

I kinda qualify as I drive a C5 estate and that has to be shite.

Most if not all of my previous cars have been shite if not ultrashite - my first 'proper' car was an 11 year old BX estate

I never lift a finger to fix my own car (rarely anyway. Last time was to repair the non-opening tailgate glass that my son demolished the following day)

I do potter around with the kid's cars now and then, why I don't do my own I don't know, probably in case I make it worse than it is already.

Your comments on your daughter are so close to my own youngest though.

She learned in/owned an ancient mini cooper, then a (brown) clubman estate twice her own age at the time, broke down at least twice a week.

She then bought a tatty but fun SAAB 900 16V Aero and loved it (me too :) ). Sold it to move to the US, didn't go and bought a 106 with a serious list to starboard and no locks. Blew a drive shaft after a couple of weeks, had it fixed and traded it in for a 2.3 SAAB 900 cabriolet 93 style. Again, we both loved that but it became very expensive to keep on the road, sold it and now drives an X reg Rover 75 Connoisseur.

She wouldn't have a new car without a very substantial bribe.

Ooooh, my score is as follows.

Audi = 1, but it was a 4x4

BMW = 7

4x4 = 40 or 50. I've got the Jeep now.

Bikers = a lot of my best mates are bikers, and yes, they're wankers.

Truck drivers = they're wankers when they sit in the middle lane for hours for no fucking reason other than to overtake another truck going the exact same speed.

Young folk modifying = no problem with that, I did it myself. I didn't do bodykits and shit, I put big engines in.

Council house dwellers = not a problem.

Disabled people = Not twats. However, non-disabled folks who can't be arsed working because they've blagged disability benefits are cunts.

Car Salesman = Yup, I've been one of those, numerous times. Yup, they're twats.

All Vauxhalls are shite = I'd change this to all FWD Vauxhalls are shite, but you're close, yup.

Great unwashed = yup. Why not just chuck your top bid in at the start and be done with it? Much easier for everyone. Cunts.

eBay = Yup. I'm using it now.

Tanker drivers = £45k a year and they're whining, greedy cunts. Soldiers in Afghanistan get half of that for doing a properly dangerous job.

People who drive in snow = Yup, they're tossers if they're doing it badly.

People who watch TV = Depends. I love Top Gear.

Hope you're enjoying fitting in.

What about a beige BMW 4x4 custom job owned by a disabled ebay seller who lives in a council house ? All them qualities make a legend !!

We are all unique, and should be content to be ourselves, and not slate others

Actually, I quite like that list as a fair amount of it applies to me. Being a wanker must be the Autoshite version of an ASBO I reckon!

I think it would be a good idea to create 3 sub forums.

Spotted threads

Collection tales and reviews

For sale

I think that creating three sub 'rooms' would be a good idea especially as the search function gets less and less effective as the site grows.

I second this motion. Have General chat for just that would make the above easier to find, especially the Spotted threads which I enjoy going back through repeatedly to entertain myself and again, while I don't comment I do enjoy them muchly and as other have before me, a big fat thanks to those of you putting the effort and leg work into those Spotted threads.

I like that we all seem to be able to be mature and grown up while simultaneously being five years old and still stay on topic... most of the time.

Posted

That list suggests that we think EVERYONE is a wanker, so suggest we're just grumpy about everything. Some old people managed to get a TV series out of complaining about everything, so I don't think it's that un-natural.

Posted

^^^^Which is precisely why i started the G.O.M. thread, in order to give all us wankers and grumps somewhere to vent. Then the grin thread to attempt balance.

So far GOM started 17/8/08 - 20241 posts approx 15.2074 posts per day

Grin thread started 21/08/09 - 11327 posts, approx 11.7744 posts per day.

So it would appear that we are all more grumpy than happy.

No surprises there then.

You miserable bastards.

I dont remember anyone slagging off all BMW/Audi drivers etc... and such forth.

As I said before, its easy to take comments the wrong way. I like to think that pretty much everyone here has at least the common sense not to tar a group of people i.e BMW/Audi drivers with the same brush despite the fact that we seem to be taught to do such a thing in todays society, as in judging a book by its cover.

Anyone here that does slag off these kinds of people do it merely because they have had a bad experience and/or seen an incident caused by such people i.e. BMW/Audi drivers and such forth. We all know that not all BMW/Audi drivers and other kinds of groups you listed are bad, its just that we do tend to bump into these sorts of people and unfortunately we tend to encounter the worst kind of that group.

...green eyed monster...

To be honest, I do think that the Green eyed monster comes from those kind of people, not us, we make choices in life that suit us and care not what others think. Many in todays society tend to make choices in life (i.e what kind of car/clothes/places to buy) merely because its fasionable and most importantly new they want to be seen to be "cool" according to what is currently in fashion/what celebrity drives/wears/lives, better than anyone else and crave the attention thier new trinket brings them. When they encounter us with our old cars/phones/whatever and that we are actually enjoying it, we are simply seen as something that 'in the way' and that can be troddon on. Sadly there are many many people like this out there who think they above anyone who doesnt have the newest trinket, and will try thier best to shove you out of the way like you're not actually there.

There's an important omission from that list: onanists. They're all wankers. So that's another point to me (and Rosie Palm and her 5 sisters). 7 in total.

Just as well I'm a born misfit.

Posted

Oi! CJ! My mums called Rosie Palmer you wsnker!!!!

:D

Basically anybody who spends money on a new or nearly new car is a total wanker even if they ate family members...my BIL drives a silver A6 oil burning estate that costs him 400 a month on finance cos it has a huge engine...whilst he's a good bloke thus makes him a total and utter wanker!!!!!

Seriously though, my only real issue is with those who are less than courteous it seek to rip off disrespectfully, others. This extends to how folk drive as well.

Wankers!

The GOM thread is a good idea and works well but the separate forums for spotting and collection adventures are the ones that quickly get lost. Unless you ate fortunate to have a quick internet connection then it cam take ages going through old posts to find the one you need. These threads don't get list because of folk not using GOM they just drop off because of the volume of relevant chod related posts. I also think the for sale area is a good idea. How many of us have kicked ourselves because we missed a car we wanted to buy?

That all BMW drivers are wankers

Must admit to having been guilty of this one, until I inherited a 3 Series and ran it for a year. Obviously B** ownership became acceptable at that point :D

I've no desire to own an Audi or a 4x4 but never say never...

I agree with the suggestions about creating sub-forums for topics - don't think it needs to be anything too complicated but perhaps something like:

General chat

Spots

For sale and wanted

Technical questions & answers

would make the forum easier to navigate (particularly those who don't visit several times a day) and solve a lot of the problems mentioned of more interesting posts disappearing quickly.

Posted

My 20 year old daughter really wanted an Allegro for her first car

Is she single? I'm not, but she sounds like ideal AS Wife material to me. :D

I have fairly strong views on most things and have unfortunately pissed a few folk off on what now appear to be uttery pointless and futile arguments. But I seem to have mellowed of late. I normally hated Marinas with a passion but since one has appeared local to me - a Damask red '74 1.8 Super foor door - I take a different view. Whereas all the modern stuff cruises blandly by, I can hear the B Series and whiney gearbox as it goes by, and laughed when the bootlid popped open over a speed bump. The owner clearly has it out of choice and keeps it going. It's not my dream car, but fuck it, I don't own it.

I used to think a lot of things were shit. But I like Vauxhalls now, will admit that a mate's 2002 Laguna 2 has actually been pretty reliable and gave grown a sneaky liking for the Juke. NURSE!!

Posted

I'm a wanker by a few of Garbaldy's definitions, and Scooters's too (even though he's supposed to be a mate, grumpy old git). I could probably start/prolong a row by defending myself, but I can't be arsed and more to the point I'm dead sure nobody cares :D.

Autoshite is like a pub full of your mates.

Most nod and say "yeah, yeah, yeah, get the drinks in will you" when you chat about your cars, some say "wow, thats ace" and occasionally some people have too much to drink and call you a cnut. But its usually over as quick as it started and apart from some broken chairs there is never any blood spilled (Apart from Pogweasel, but we know where he is buried).

Ted has it right, for me. This is where I come for a bit of entertainment. If I fancy a laugh any time, I call up the eBay thread; if I need inspiration, I look at the great/hopeless resto stories; if I worry I'm mad for buying another tired old car then more or less anyone on here will give me heart. It's way better than telly - plus someone else is paying for it all (Messrs Sceptre and Leyland, I presume - thank you). Hosting a high traffic site like this isn't free, and a quantity of trouble went into setting it all up. There's no ads, no subscription and no sponsor members flogging stuff, and the site's better for it.

Do I miss some of the old faces who left? Yeah, some, but I like the fact that I can put my twopenn'orth in without getting yelled at for not living my life the 'correct' AS way, which used to happen quite a bit. I'd already given up on AS when the Big Row happened last year, and I was glad to find it a nicer place on balance when I came back. So I stayed. I don't feel welcome on the blue forum.

Having sub-sections is a good idea in principle, but I fear we'll start to argue about whether posts are in the right section, and then we need mods to move them, so people start carping at the mods, which quickly descends into toy throwing, and then we go the way of lots of other forums. I gave up on the Mk1 Golf forum because of exactly that (well, that and all the YO SICK COILOVER RAT LUK STRETCH TYRES bollocks).

Thing is, I prefer pubs that don't have a door policy and don't need bouncers.

Liberté! Egalité! Autoshité!

I still find myself muttering "f***ing BMW drivers" under my breath occasionally - even when I am myself behind the wheel of my BMW. Hypocrisy FTW.

The newer and smaller* the BMW, the more likely to be a wanker. Yours is old and big, so you're exempt from the general rule, as is Cort16 with his 740i. My neighbour with his 09 plate 120d on chrome RIMZ, on the other hand, is the living proof.

*Apart from X3s and X5s of course - these are all driven by fucknuggets.

^ Spot on Skizzer (a couple of posts up). AS is ace as it is :D

There are plenty of great forums that have been ruined by multiple subforums and the Mods that enforce them.

I appreciate that it must be a pain to post a spotted thread and then have it dissappear off the front page after a day or so. Perhaps a solution could be to mark your own thread in the favorites on your browser and do regular small updates?

I appreciate it would be a pain but it's like a little goldmine when long lost spotted threads resurface.

Posted

I've never owned a BMW OR an AUDI, but I've had 2 wanks today already. Back of the net.

Posted

I'd just like to say that I love the spotted threads and read them all religiously, although like others I don't always comment. I'll try to comment more, and update my own thread (I've discovered enough quality new shite now for a decent update).

It's a shame that some people have left, but it's up to them and new members are joining all the time with some fantastic shite between them. I'd also like to see the forum left well alone, i.e. no moderation or subcategories, it's such a refreshing change from other forums which have moderators like the bloody Gestapo.

Posted

There is one thing I really do like about this place and thats the fact that Im not old. Its so bloody good to have people around you also hurtling towards and bypassing half a century because they have inhabited the same time on this Planet as you have and have seen and done the things you have and "get it".

I lurk more than I post because I will only post it if ive got something to say/of interest and Im not here everyday.

The forum works best when people dont bring their personal shit here, ya know, "My hamster died today, im devastated so i will take it out on somebody Ive decided i dont like..." ya know THAT kind of bollocks.

Dont moderate it and dont let others try to, its one of the very few places that really is like a Pub with no Landlord and staff about and you are trusted to pour your own drinks and pay for them, so long as you dont pull the piss.

I like the spotted threads but, in all fairness, how much can you make out of a couple of pics or ten? Maybe to make it viable you need to machine gun in the posts in a similar way that you do the E'bay jobbies so nobody gets to pause for breath.

If I bother to get the camera out I might be able to get a few pics of a Saab 99EMS, a MK1 Scirrocco and 2A Landy that have been gently rotting away for at least ten years, I mean, ive not seen a EMS and a MK1 Scirrocco on the road for eons, what are the chances of seeing two together rotting away.......

Posted

I don't think we need moderating as such, but a bit of tidying up of threads (for instance moving things to eBay tat/grin/grumpy/news 24) and perhaps once in a blue moon removing or locking such shit as 'J/K/L/M Proton' crap.

I suppose here is as good a place as any to stop lurking as I have been for a while. (My shite is a '91 BX TZD hatch BTW, yes, ANOTHER ONE).

From point of view of n00b who is still finding their way around, the thing that makes this place really scary for me is that it is all just chucked into one forum. Enjoy perving at the spotted threads and restoration stories are interesting, but scrolling through pages of crap to get to 'em just makes me lose the will to live TBH. Even just a few sub-forums would make it a bit easier to keep up with such a fast moving place. For me, wouldn't need to be any more than General chat, For sale, Spotted, Technical (incl. restorations), and Just shit (for those threads that not many people really want to ever see again). Or something like that.

(If anyone takes an instant hate to me, blame Dollywobbler whose post on BXC it was that brought me here - OHAI)

Welcome, another BX is no bad thing

Personaly I don't like multi-section forums, and generally threads stay on page on for at least 24 hours after the latest post.

It may work here but lots of times it turns into arguements about what threds are where.

I think most of you really havent read my post properly or have taken it the wrong way, these are not my veiws they are observations made from reading through what ive read

i own a bmw as our family daily and i have to tell you this is the first time ive mentioned it for fear of being tarred with the same brush  i also own an audi, 4 motorbikes, 3 4x4s and my brother drives an hgv and best friend runs two, but i useually keep quiet about the fact.

one more point on the whole bmw issue when i drive it other motorists do not let you out or even give way but in my old rammel i never have a problem  i dont however have this problem where i live, horses tractors hgvs cars cyclers even walkers all get along.

mabe its because im a country bumkin that i notice the many grumps about your fellow man, or mabe its that it is 5 miles to my nearest shop and i can drive nearly the whole distance sometimes without passing another car,

or it could be the fact that i work in the fresh air for 35 hrs in a really cushy job so i dont have the southern stress levels that many have to put up with,
