That beige Polonez: EUROTRIP 2014

Yes this is another thing we had discussed. The darker stripe down the side has been added later on in its life. It will definitely remain the original colour and could quite possible have the darker green stripe added to.

If youse are going to have a go at fixing the green car, can you chop the entire front end structure off the white one and either graft it in or use it as a source of repair sections?

Posted
I hope the superb colour scheme lives on with the re-shelled* car.

I was considering putting the blue on it but not sure yet. It will defianlely be painted "horrible green" in the first instance.

We did discuss that with DA Autoparts.. They said they would give us a marker pen to mark where to cut, I was going to draw round the vin plate and let them have that, and take the rest... but not allowed.

I would chop through the screen pillars and across the floor just behind the A-posts. Cut N shut!

If you are serious about fixing the green one, I reckon you are defo gonna need a donor shell.

I'll just leave this here.

Just seen this, fair play for buying that field car! A few years ago I'd have said no way, but I've read threads on here and RR that now make me say 'Do it!'

Has there been a collection thread that I've missed?

Wow - I didn't know Jesus Redondo drew that sort of stuff too!

Hey, since you're totally rebuilding it and not a great deal will be original, why not do something cool with it like this:

I hear what your saying about originality... the car will be a bit of a mish mash. Most would probably shy away from using a car after the sort of work that will be involved. I'm not so bothered, it will be stronger than when it left the factory.

I guess it will look a lot like this when it's done:

If you remember, at the start of the year, I described this as "hanging":

As of today, we officially have a new definition of the word.

I really admire your dedication but what in the name of satan's portion are you thinking?!

You know when people say there's a fine line between bravery and stupidity?  I think to you guys the line is now a dot.

While in Scotland we did a deal on this:

She will be on the road sometime in 2015. Don't believe me - wanna fight about it?

Wow man, seriously, I'm speechless.

This is gunna be interesting.

There's nothing left. How can you even begin to weld that ? There's no good metal to weld to! It'll just disintegrate when you go near it with a torch

Posted

There is good metal it's just hiding. I'll coax it out one day with the grinder. It probably starts being solid about 1 foot from the ground upwards. Some of the bulkhead is okay, most of the back end is okay but it will need new inner rear arches, and outer. There is stuff to weld to.

I just need everyone's vision to align with mine. Or at least Steve's.

Everyone and I mean everyone is screaming re-shell. That is what is spurring me on not to re-shell it.

To be honest I might just cave in, would be a lot simpler

Whatever you do, keep those bloody wheel trims! They are metal aren't they? They look wonderful for some unfathomable reason.

Posted

Wheel trims are reminiscent of 70s Fiats (there's a suprise!) -I've got shedloads.

Mad -just mad.  I'll buy you a large beer the day I see that cars  current MOT certificate. Really

Posted

Looks a great day out fetching that mind you. What was the feller like to deal with?

Posted

You are either a genius or mental but if you get that thing MOT'd in my lifetime I'll +1 on buying you a pint.

Like the FSO liveried van as well.

Posted

Erm. Okay. Really? I don't know wether to applaud you, congratulate you, or just stare in bewilderment. You do actually see what we see in those pictures, don't you?

;-)

Crazy. Hats off for giving a whirl!

I am trying my hardest to.....

However, fuck me that looks rotten. Good luck and all that.

TOP-TIP: Buy a dustpan and brush.

Posted

Where there's a will and all that. I reckon a bunch of maniacs could manage it but my question is where on earth are you going to start? Sills? Inner wings?

Posted

Spotted this on Alpus's (Alex's) photostream on flickR. Very brave indeed, I say.

Wouldn't this basically need a new bodyshell say from a Polish registered model?

Anyhow, best of Bristish luck with the resto. :)

Some more photos of the rescue mission, the camper got stuck at one point so Douglas brought the Shogun down to tow it out then it started raining so things got complicated.

The inner wings had both collapsed a few years back when Douglas moved it from the top of his field, so as a result the engine and subframe were sat on the floor. This made loading it difficult.

28062013147.jpg

We made a skate to sit under the engine and slid it up the Rhino board on bin bags. I think it took around 2 hours to load.

The number plate in this picture isn't Photoshopped, that is how it's ended up

My want is for as much as the original car to be preserved as possible even to the point where it isn't pristine and new and shiny. I think there may even be hope for the carpet, however it has foliage growing in the rear footwells

The dash is pretty bad, but I'm happy to reuse it, plus finding a RHD one to replace it would be tricky. The top speaker cover will need replacing though as it has curled up in the sun.

What bit of miss information can any man tell you about the FSO Polonez?

The rear seat doesn't fold down waah, well in this case it doesn't. Only the very first ones had this feature. I was excited when I found this, a solid bulkhead behind the rear seats:

Also found a few light lenses in it and a better numberplate:
