I have the Jeep, Rancho and Firebird in boxes, and unboxed black and white Sierras plus Renault Trafic. I think they're in the box of stuff I've put aside for sale at some point.

Right.

Ok, The AS Corgi BP Library Lifetime Achievement Tally is as follows:

(Spot the box-end labelling mistake)

image.thumb.png.f47b13927b8a0c9c285f39acec15cd00.png

So the outstanding BP Corgi cars to collect are:

Transit Wrecker - yellow BP livery
Zakspeed Capri - 'Homefire'
Ferrari 308 GTS

BMW M3 - yellow 'Silverstone'
Porsche 935 - 'Polo' mints
Jaguar XJS - 'Track Car'
Vauxhall Nova - BP 'Visco Nova' livery
Land Rover - Duckhams 'Race Support'

This is a catalogue release, so is unfortunately banned from the proceedings,  ? sorry:

Does your Rancho box have an identity problem?

When I was a kid I had most of those as our local service station was BP, so presumably my dad would have picked them up. Used to stick the green shield stamps on the garage I had.

Why are some in a red box?

I think I've owned all of them at some point, those that I now have are as follows:

Visco Nova (original survivor)

Duckhams Escort

Orange Jeep

Transit Wrecker

Pointers Transit (the other original survivor, all others have been bought recently)

Volvo 760

Weetabix Volvo F12 (came in the same style of box, presume it was part of this promotion)

Renault Trafic

Schweppes Pontiac

BMW M3 race car

Jaguar track car

Half a Homefire Sierra (cut and shutb original but not really a survivor!)

I also have examples of the others but they are colour variations not in the promotion.

Black Jaguar XJ6

Police BMW E30

Various Rovers

Red Rancho

Various Escorts ( including the Weetabix 'XR3i')

R5 Turbo

Spooky. No, but going to look for it did get me briefly confused as I'd put it into the Firebird's box.

I had a few of those BP Corgis too, all unboxed and played with, but they went to new homes at Shitefest '16. I definitely remember the Polo Porsche, Visco Nova, Duckhams Escort, Pointers Transit and Homefire Sierra. The latter I know was acquired by Angrydicky to make a replica of the bASe.

What is ‘Ford Wrecker Truck’

There is no Ford wrecker truck apart from the Transits. And they already have their own boxes as ‘Transit Wrecker’

I've got most of them still boxed. Picked them up at a toy fair last year...

No idea. Why are some in a blue box? Conundrum..  but at least it’s 50:50 so I can sleep soundly without worrying

Gah! What...  a WEETABIX  promotion???

You've got me twitching now...

"Racing" would be correct on those Opels, just as the multiple crescents would on the Subaru.  Rally cars would often appear in the 80s and 90s with a market-specific livery if the local laws didn't allow tobacco advertising.  You would just get the colours you knew, with the sponsor's name deleted: Rothman's and 555 in these two cases.

The racing decals are incorrect for the Opels, both ran in full Rothmans liveries. The Audi is missing the HB branding but the Subaru is correct

I guess the change is to allow the diecast manufacturers to be able to sell the models in the current climate

Has anyone got a spare set of majorette 3 spokes please? I've got a duff tyre on a model I'm restoring. Thanks.

Eddy's explanation is right, and it's not a current climate thing.

There have been many international rules set from the late 1970s onwards.  One significant turning point was the strict 1992 US Federal Congress act on tobacco advertising.  If a toy/model manufacturer released an identifiable tobacco livery, then it was an offence in the US to allow an under 18 into the shop.

Hornby and others got around the earlier UK legislation by for example labelling a Scalextric Ducati Marlboro rather than the other way around.  Also the use of Lotus JPS could also continue due to John Player tobacco being a brand that wasn't available in the UK.   At least that's my understanding of it.

Notice that for 1995 WRC the 555 lettering was present, see photo below.  L555 BAT Chassis #93.003 survives (the very car your model is of) but since British American Tobacco dropped Subaru/Prodrive sponsorship in 1998 the 555 lettering had to be removed so the car could be seen in public at any publicity or privateer event.  So the model is correct / incorrect depending on point of view.

I think I bored myself there, sorry.

TL;DNR - Getting the Rothmans and State Express 555 decals would dress them up better I agree!
