Damn! Rolled over to page 1992…

Ok, how about the Williams The FW14B.  Made quite an impression on me back then

Quote

The FW14B was the dominant car that year and Mansell wrapped up the 1992 Drivers' Championship with a then-record 9 wins in a season, whilst Patrese scored a further win at the Japanese Grand Prix. Patrese did not warm to the car as much as the FW14, as he preferred the passive suspension in that chassis, whereas the increased level of downforce generated by the FW14B suited Mansell's aggressive driving style much better. [wikipedia]

Quote

On the active suspension, [Patrick] Head added: “We had been developing active suspension since 1985, which started off by AP coming to us.

“They were developing a system for road vehicles, but they decided that they weren’t going to continue with it and rather than bury it, they contacted us as we were using AP brakes at the time.

“At first, it was purely mechanical, but we needed it in digital form so that we could control it electronically.

“It was basically aiming for target mean ride-heights front and rear. As the programme went on, control became more sophisticated.

“We could alter the attitude of the car on track and if the driver complained of understeer here or oversteer there, we could overcome the problem.” [PlanetF1]

Sebastian Vettel bought a Mansell car, the No.5, for an undisclosed sum at auction; thought to be heading for 4M Euros

Biggest changes for the better on this model compared to Corgi's own are of course the wheels,

IMG_20250618_215320.jpg.27c1e0cc3b100b7b6ff0c49ca40f7e69.jpg

which are Tony's own, that he had tooled up by Corgi for the previous silver Mk3 release, and the black detailing around the window surrounds,

Compare it to the Sebring red Corgi version,

IMG_20250618_220327.jpg.266f30d8c7edb9057ccd615d870824a2.jpg

Still love the Sebring red Ghia, but what a difference.

I saw one on eBay yesterday but didn’t look at what price it was. Thank god they didn’t use the god awful wheels on the standard release models.

Ive just bought some replacements for the standard one I’m redoing as my own Capri.

Took a bit of a wander through the local market yesterday morning.

Colin from the Irish Tat stall was there; he only works my town every other week and since I hadn't been down since February, I wasn't sure if he'd be there.

But he was.

He had quite a lot of Hot Wheels Premiums up for grabs; apparently his distributor is offering them out at pretty good prices right now.

IMG_20250619_0859252.jpg.815b5928639bcb3309a868c31ac945f6.jpg

He's able to knock them out at £5 a go for singles, and £15 for twin packs and Team Transports.

IMG_20250619_0857132.jpg.fad884f503524f601d5ba4eade681555.jpg

We speculated that maybe the whole unstable situation in the US with tariffs has led major retailers over there to be cautious in how much stock they're ordering, in case some sort of 100% import tariff is arbitrarily imposed on their delivery while already en route from Thailand or Malaysia. And this may have resulted in unexpectedly surplus stock from Mattel's manufacturing plants now being dumped cheaply onto European markets.

IMG_20250619_0857052.jpg.c8e671407d164ca8948c7dac00f154b6.jpg

Not bad for collectors if this is so, for now at least. Annoyingly, I have most of these already!

Backing up this theory, he also had quite a few examples from the Hot Wheels 'Spring 2025' series:

IMG_20250619_0855472.jpg.0dc6bf568d12f90e9ca15bc44b844a49.jpg

I understand this mini-range was a Walmart exclusive earlier in the year. All fantasy vehicles rather than licenced castings, but still quite an appealing little assortment.

And there were Matchbox too: Collectors Series, all out at a fiver as well.

IMG_20250619_0856372.jpg.f8fa0d3e3ff1e06b8ceb3fee18880758.jpg

I grabby-hands quite a few of these, before putting them back.

IMG_20250619_0856432.jpg.eb70ad9a06094e2cd0a20016864c532f.jpg

While a good price, the supercars and luxury SUVs don't do much for me, and the older styled ones are kinda not quite there, for me at least.

The Celica is quite good, if a bit short, but the wheels on the Audi Coupe, Aston Martin Vantage and Mazda RX-3 just seem out of scale. I dithered over the Mercedes 450SEL, but eventually decided that I liked it, but I didn't love it enough to take it home.

Which surprised me too.

He also had a few 1/43 partworks featuring '70s US metal:

IMG_20250619_0857352.jpg.1be6b0ec32a247ea80953f9ee994d790.jpg

And those did appeal to me.

IMG_20250620_0758302.jpg.1290df3825df26fbd0c44853bb32b67a.jpg

Well well well.

IMG_20250620_0758462.jpg.f739a63fb4d1c35ef7d0e59a1f9d4421.jpg

Possibly it was the film links that induced me to bring these two home - the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T is always going to bring to mind Barry Newman's steed in Vanishing Point.

IMG_20250620_0759082.jpg.5733f1594e60e9efb6dd7686a664d2d1.jpg

Painted here in Plum Crazy rather than the Alpine White of the film car, but that's fine - it's a stunning colour.

And, well - a black 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is forever linked to Burt Reynolds in Smokey and The Bandit.

IMG_20250620_0759292.jpg.f8436d8744ff9fab412a91e3a2292524.jpg

Even the interior detail's pretty good here.

IMG_20250620_0759412.jpg.dda56089484c3854c7e3d289b858244e.jpg

Thought I was kinda over 1/43 stuff, but apparently not...

Also took a jaunt through St George's this morning.

First time in a long time.

Millar's stall had a few bits and bobs, though nothing really old:

IMG_20250620_0855192.jpg.6c9aeffb774e3334f46e63e6a5bff5dd.jpg

£20 on the larger commercials, £10 on the smaller stuff.

IMG_20250620_0855082.jpg.da0aa2255043dac82d9763b5d7bb4f0a.jpg

Cadillac hearse was an odd one, but I refrained.

Colin's parallel Irish Tat stall in St G's also had a few more Matchbox Collectors Series in stock at a fiver:

IMG_20250620_0854102.jpg.bb19b83c3ceb350a59c12e85425d3ae3.jpg

I nearly took the Olds 442, but aaaaahhh... there's just something about its proportions I can't jive with.

Alan's 50p Tat Tray was reliably present, though again I couldn't quite find anything to prompt me to reach for the change in my pocket.

IMG_20250620_0856032.jpg.b1cf8dc0de484f53f99aa41b089fa3dc.jpg

Some of the other collectables stalls had some items, unexpectedly - at a price, of course.

IMG_20250620_0858402.jpg.727fb24c84a9b0a11526a77542b881ef.jpg

£5 for a Corgi Cameos van didn't bode well.

IMG_20250620_0858202.jpg.b42a8bf413cf1cbee7f8b7dc9724df6b.jpg

The late-80s Corgi Classics Racing Fords triple pack was unusual, though likely priced at more than my house.

IMG_20250620_0858302.jpg.ffeda52cc542aa89a1afafd871c13da5.jpg

And Paddy's Antiques Shitshow had a few artfully displayed diecast objets:

IMG_20250620_0859032.jpg.e9870491683666cbbbdef0f94d5f9370.jpg

Yes, sir - that is indeed £12 for a scratched MoY Ford van.

IMG_20250620_0859442.jpg.3afccd8abad3de820c89b7e14bd176f7.jpg

Squashed Corgi Juniors Interceptor could have tempted me for 50p - but not at £8, no.

Ah well. Best to remember the good times, yeah?

Happy Friday, kids.

Not sure what's happened with Matchbox Moving Parts here in the UK.  Last year several retailers had them in with regular updates of batches but then it's all gone very quiet. A shame as its probably Matchbox best line.

I only paid £25 from Jcar in the US and don't pay the horrific postage costs as a friend of mine who orders in bulk absorbs it 😉

A more realistic route is probably ordering a case from Tom's Modellautos who are based in the Netherlands

Lovely little thing it is! I remember a neighbour had one when I was little, but you never seemed to see very many.
I do much prefer the 5 door version to the stubby 3 door type. The back looks like it’s been sawn off on the 3 doors!

Came from French France.
I’ve seen these Odeon branded models before but they’re often quite pricey, and seem to be a French thing. Most of the models are of French vehicles. They’re another one though that’s almost certainly related to IXO.

Ill probably get rid of the branding on the side, whatever it is, but otherwise it’s fine as it is I think.

That's "The shortest 4-door in Europe" as hinted by the measure around the car!  It's probably original Peugeot publicity branding.

I remember when they were all over in France, they’d only been out of production 8-10 years by that point but they were everywhere, they were the archetypical banger at that point. Didnt they have some arse about tit arrangement where the fan belt went round a corner?

Wouldn’t surprise me, being French! They seem to go out of their way to complicate things!😁

I haven’t seen one in the UK for yonks. Last one was on the A3 one morning, just bumbling along in lane one with some old guy driving it. Pretty sure it was a V reg. looked a low end one too, very basic looking.

Apparently they were in production until 1988 but I can’t remember ever seeing any that late?

Came from French France.
I’ve seen these Odeon branded models before but they’re often quite pricey, and seem to be a French thing. Most of the models are of French vehicles. They’re another one though that’s almost certainly related to IXO.

Ill probably get rid of the branding on the side, whatever it is, but otherwise it’s fine as it is I think.

OMFG!  That’s the colour my 104 was!  An internet search for Odeon beckons…
