A quick trip around town today netted a few stragglers from a delivery I missed at Entertainer. All generic castings, but I like the smashed up ones

I have the railway carriage, horse carriage and the paddle steamer. I had some cowboys and Indians that had been my brothers, Christ knows where they ended up.

I have that Eko Pegaso truck, its a lovely thing. They made a few cars and I have a Rover P5 3 litre and a Ford Zodiac MK3.  I thought they were a strange choice of subject for a Spanish manufacturer.

I used to really like those Mira Pegaso trucks you could get in Spain.

I’ve done some more bits n bobs recently.

I did this F100 ages ago but it’s been sat around with no wheels because it’s original ones don’t really suit it now. But a recent purchase has donated its alloys which are a bit more in keeping.
Bond partwork Ford Brono II wheels. The Bronco is a weathered model covered in sand colour paint so the tyres need a clean off and I’ll probably paint the wheels a darker grey.

IMG_4608.jpeg.d08b5b8959a19814baa39dd9087aef53.jpeg

Said Bronco was then stripped and repainted.
It’s actually a nice pale silver-ish blue-ish colour by… Peugeot! Moonstone blue.

IMG_4632.jpeg.9b41b82221cdc26eb6e8886699324a91.jpeg

Now a fuc* up!
Bond partwork AMC Hornet, stripped and painted in the exact same manner and materials as the Brono but for some weird reason this happened!
It’s cured and has a shine, but it’s all mottled and uneven. Looks absolutely awful. So I’ve had to start over.
Oddly, the inside of the shell went on and dried perfectly smooth.

And finally, the Thames coke bottle truck has a new rear bed. Nice simple flatbed conversion. All scratch built from plastic sheet & section. The piece of angle on the deck will become the rear bumper/light bar.

@danthecapriman I love seeing your updates, great work there!

I had the same strange reaction a couple of times recently and on one I managed to wet sand and polish to revive the finish, but the other was stripped off again and I kind of lost interest in it and it's been sat in primer for a few months!

Cheers! I love seeing your projects too!

I don’t know what happened to that paint. The inside of the shell was just a quick blow over really to catch all the undersides of the arches, window frames etc etc but it came out perfectly.
I flip it over and do the outside of the body with much more care and that happens! Aside from the colour all the process and makes of paint are the same on the Bronco… and that’s come out fine. Weird.

I tried to wet flat it back but it just wore through in the low spots and scratched the buggery out of the high spots. I’ve done a Capri into Miami blue (different brand top coat) which went the same way, but I’ve managed to save that one with a bit of flatting and some clear lacquer.

Thinking about it, the cans both those cars were painted in were getting low, so I wonder if it’s spraying with lower pressure when the can starts getting empty which leaves that spattering effect? Could it help to heat the can up first to help thin the paint and increase the pressure a bit?

  • Thanks 1

@danthecapriman I see what you mean about the cans getting, low but I usually find if I can keep it level then they still work ok. I did also have a problem with a can I bought on t'internet which turned out to have a "special" wide angle nozzle and that gave a similar finish. That had to be stripped and I re did it by replacing the nozzle with an old one I'd soaked in Cellulose thinners.

I do this with every stage of painting mine, and I use a hairdryer to warm the casting up beforehand and dry the paint after

Going up in the loft to sort cars out so I'll try and bang some on my sales thread at 7. Far too much stuff in my loft now, just can't enjoy any of it.  Think it's the boxed stuff that's taking up a lot of the space, that's hard to part with though.

One way or another I'm not doing outside jobs today, just dodged a downpour earlier so I'm not risking it

Remember this whole non-saga involving the 2x Matchbox Action Drivers Airport Adventure Sets?

IMG_20240518_0051302.jpg.c5bad41cfefac1e08cafc23ab34f70a3.jpg

Well, the set with working light and sound functions, which arrived from Amazon in the slightly dinged box, has been sent on to the tender mercies of my brother's kids, along with a couple of extra planes and a few Matchbox five-packs.

The cheaper impulse-buy version in the better box from Toytown in Ards, but which failed to provide light or sound when buttons were pushed, was then stuffed under the bed while I grappled with some needlessly conflicted feelings.

After weeks of prevarication, I finally popped open the box late on Saturday night and dragged all the bits out.

IMG_20240518_0123562.jpg.c963a357c6c0dc949890e96923cf8e2a.jpg

There's quite a few of them.

IMG_20240518_0124192.jpg.3e12dd8eecc1ebf7a21494436e79e46a.jpg

Oddly, some stickers are already applied but others aren't. Not just the big stickers, either.

IMG_20240518_0142582.jpg.5b34849e9f17f81459596d887c36df88.jpg

I guess it helps me feel more involved with the whole construction element, or something.

Looks pretty decent once built up, though.

IMG_20240520_1309492.jpg.b3b53bc0afb27a5373452e47ea19a987.jpg

I mean, the runway's not exactly to scale - but as a playset designed for ages 3+ it's pretty good.

IMG_20240520_1311432.jpg.5fd427162895839719cb9a88527f8cb8.jpg

Pressing down at a button on the far end of the runway makes some red markers appear.

I'm not sure why, but excitement nonetheless.

IMG_20240520_1314062.jpg.4b4a20b7303841b38c131b55983460d8.jpg

And there's two gates for the aircraft to load and unload at - though maybe not at the same time.

IMG_20240520_1311192.jpg.6b376bda4cf61b8daf777cac1524f631.jpg

The width of the wings and the relative compactness of the airfield means there's quite a few opportunities for the plane to come in contact with bits of the airport - hopefully something that would be sorted out at the design stage, in the real world.

The drop-off zone is up a ramp, and the idea is that the action of rolling a car over the little pressure switch causes the Departures doors to slide open, people inside to mill about, lights to flash and tannoy announcements to sound.

IMG_20240520_1310423.jpg.d7e183395bad9d526c9442bdc58a0b1d.jpg

But because I put it together in the dark (near enough) one of the little pegs didn't locate properly so only one door slid open, and only the people on the left side moved.

But I did find a piece of plastic packaging jammed in the battery compartment, which it seems is designed to stop the light 'n' sound function activating in transit - presumably the tab was meant to be removed at the point of sale, but it seems this one broke off leaving just a short bit of plastic sticking out. The Amazon one didn't have this fitted, strangely.

Well well well.

So it does make lots of whooshy aircraft noises, and honking, and bing-bong announcements after all.

All of which are surprisingly loud at 1am.

I jammed the bit of plastic back in again...

And then there's a ramp to go back down.

IMG_20240520_1313402.jpg.40dd4117bc220ca3ce02dc7c4b5a65ab.jpg

IMG_20240520_1311252.jpg.0bef18223e24c0a1955dc11de81aab6e.jpg

Plus a little parking space under the ramp for security vehicles, too.

IMG_20240520_1310032.jpg.c72ee3229189025773a1ea1aeda2cf42.jpg

And then a ground floor Arrivals collection point:

IMG_20240520_1310492.jpg.f0a727ef69441f6696e92213007a08b6.jpg

As well as the movable traffic barriers, the baggage carousels revolve when you turn a little knurled wheel.

IMG_20240520_1311032.jpg.ff05d02f9c13b3891a43ce946b76a4ae.jpg

Parking area barrier goes up when the pressure switch is activated.

There's not a lot of parking at this here airport - but I guess that's where the Action Drivers Multistorey Car Park™ playset probably comes in.

Link-selling, yo.

IMG_20240520_1312282.jpg.ba96ab7184bc637c24898d354ab6b76c.jpg

There's a load of luggage carts lined up under another ramp, pleasingly - though no action here, just decoration.

IMG_20240520_1312422.jpg.86ed9702061d44b02055f8019766ff8e.jpg

Lamp posts and other little details like that do add to the overall realism, though.

I forgot to take an overhead pic of the set to show the overall size, annoyingly, but it's pretty big - at least the same footprint as six of the smallest sets (Pizza Hut etc).

IMG_20240520_1313072.jpg.3cd3794e44b06249d2769151c7c5159a.jpg

Then I took it apart again (or as much as I could get apart) and shoved it back in the box.

It's great and all, but at the same time I do feel vaguely embarrassed about the whole enterprise. I mean, they're just plasticky kids' toys, these... and yet. They appeal so much to me.

That said, at some stage I'd like to connect it up with the other buildings in the range and take more pics - so stay tuned...
