Only one of the cars is correct for it but it still looks good.

I'll need to get more cars down from the loft to fill the shelf up a bit more now!

There's quite a few cars on yours that I hadn't thought of using - I'll get those on as I'd really like to keep them Corgi-only.

Picked up this curio today.

Matchbox promotional van.

I guess they would send these out to prospective customers to see if they would buy a custom batch.

Thought it was an interesting item.

I wonder if anyone has ever been able to complete a definitive list of MB38 models. There are hundreds of them out there, and there must be so many variations that it would probably take a life time to track them all down.

I’ve got about 15 of them, mostly U.K. on pack offers. The Charlie Mack book is fairly conclusive but there will always be code 2 issues that crop up. The Ben Franklin one is the one to find, expect to fork out £500 for one.

I have an answer too.  To get hold of a Ben Franklin, make your own.  The Pepsi-Cola base was used, so get hold of one of them, rub off the tampo, fire up the inkjet printer and wham, money saved.

Who has a Vectis account (silly question) who can look up the hammer price on this bundle from last month?

Because I told myself I only needed the one, and its replacement arrived off this very forum earlier this month.

You see, I've had an aversion to those Model A coupes and Vans ever since childhood.  But I think the hang-up was the wheels all along.

So a plan had been hatched.  The transfer of some Lledo donor metal wheels to give it that authentic* touch.

I loved my Kellogs corn flakes one. No idea where it went.

I bet mines still in my big box of toy cars (will have a look tomorrow). I miss promotional stuff obtained by eating lots of breakfast cereal.

I wondered why they decided on CYCLE

20230211_144429.jpg

rather than DESERT on the real thing

Nissan_Desert_Runner_ThreeQuarter.thumb.jpg.02e62980a713db0d30575669bff8fba2.jpg

Nissan built 1000 of them to commemorate success on Baja 1000 for 1998.

There is no cycling on the Baja 1000.  Fighting the sand would do your knees in.

I think I may be able to shed a little bit of light on this conundrum... Not completely, but another piece of the puzzle. Read on...

So I was out yesterday morning doing a spot of light grocery-gathering, as you might do of a Saturday.

And I had one eye out for any interesting diecast, as you also might do.

Home Bargains had nothing of interest. The same went for Poundland, and Poundstretcher (still with a forlornly empty Matchbox Working Rigs peg, but no stock).

Lidl indicated that they would have some Hot Wheels in on Monday - though they look like quite old releases, and only a little cheaper than the other retailers.

638205185_IMG_20230325_1310492.thumb.jpg.3d54c5f220c7d1da223f3ee5fdd6c2e4.jpg

Sainsbury's had no Matchbox, though did have some 2023 Hot Wheels:

2072494608_IMG_20230325_1043522.thumb.jpg.c15d6e582bd72b6e765d4d8986a93989.jpg

Salty enough at £2.30, and difficult to rummage through.

1441873831_IMG_20230325_1044162.thumb.jpg.11a3cd63f40c0b623877eb0d080203a5.jpg

I find it hard to believe anyone's paying triple for a novelty paint finish, though.

Tesco was where things got a little more interesting.

Hot Wheels remain sorely neglected.

1986983633_IMG_20230325_1101322.thumb.jpg.8c13e77364e133a895b4e2401a9fe53e.jpg

The dump bin's just full of literal rubbish, for the most part.

However, the latest 2023 Matchbox case seemed to have arrived, finally.

951346047_IMG_20230325_1058392.thumb.jpg.fde6e6c3f1df8946233cdd77fca94db6.jpg

Though it appeared to have been already filleted of anything interesting like the AMC Eagle or Dodge Charger. Loads of Renault Méganes, though.

But that's okay - B&M had sated my desire here a few weeks ago.

But it was nice to see there's still somewhere to buy Matchbox locally.

Methodically sifting through the contents revealed there were a lot of unloved motorbike trailers in there, still.

Two different kinds, in fact.

20363925_IMG_20230325_1058522.thumb.jpg.8be2efc8a8c0f08854697598b18f00de.jpg

The version with the silver bike and the dished custom-style wheels is from the previous case assortment, and has Sheriff's Department tampo print on it.

The version with the black bike and the disc wheels is from the latest selection, and looks set to win the 'least wanted' prize this time round too.

Only, looking a bit closer...

138432893_IMG_20230325_1059242.thumb.jpg.820dcb86db5dde70efe1001b29d4a921.jpg

Now, that printed red and blue graphic over the wheels looks a bit familiar...

279607761_IMG_20230326_0018033.thumb.jpg.2b53b28b0deac443604141b858eec934.jpg

Aha.

Well, there was only one thing for it...

115142995_IMG_20230326_0043492.thumb.jpg.0b4b100987acd661b9860e2098d6389f.jpg

(as an aside, I can still never manage to use the old brushed-on acetone trick to remove these from their blister packs - I always seem to wind up with a soggy, coggled cardboard back that still rips when I try to coax the plastic away)

Yeah... that looks about right.

1820607433_IMG_20230326_0044462.thumb.jpg.5bdf7e7c9932bef12f3d22a7169b9cb7.jpg

And in fact, looking at the back...

780412681_IMG_20230326_0044302.thumb.jpg.7c1919eb8e2e611accd2da342cfbb3f6.jpg

Well, that seems fairly conclusive.

581653329_IMG_20230326_0045052.thumb.jpg.00736bfa75349cc13105058f37945f21.jpg

So for some reason the 'Cycle Runner' Nissan Hardbody seems to match up with the motorcycle trailer in the same case assortment.

Now, I still dunno quite where the term 'Cycle Runner' on a Nissan Desert Runner comes from, unless someone out there in Mattel's design team intended it as an in-joke, but it's an explanation of sorts as to why the pick-up's lettering ain't factory standard.

662072196_IMG_20230326_0044152.thumb.jpg.a7ec2414ac3cc28992f16170c0720db7.jpg

Still, might be the easiest (and cheapest!) way to obtain a Hitch 'N Haul two-set?

They only made a thousand of them exclusively for Ben Franklin managers but like the Beales Bealeson vans there seems to be four times as many about as were ever produced.
