Sometimes you just have to give something a home, and that's how I came to rescue this Britains JCB Telehandler.

Spotted on a high shelf in a Brighton charity shop, it must have belonged to some giffer's collection. It's not perfect; it's lost part of the windscreen guard and the gems for its headlights, but everything works, and the paint and - amazingly - paper stickers are intact.

Three quid.

I had that as a kid, mine sat in my window, those old Britains were really sensitive to UV degrading the plastics so mine literally fell apart! IIRC it would have come with different buckets, a pallet and some straw bales.

Old Britain's stuff is just great isn't it? Perfectly scaled as I'm sure you'll agree.

Most of my items fell apart but the 'Leyland' (Iveco) milk tanker has survived in perfect condition, which I got from a local newsagent in 1986. The best thing about it are the realistic wheels and tyres. It's a great model.

I had a few of those, a kid on our street had the big flat bed type one with a Maggy Deutz sticker on. The unpopular Autoway tackle commands some serious money.

I thumbed the catalogue for about 2 years before I got one! The roadworks range was the best as it was the most relevant to stuff I saw every day.

The range they offered was epic, everything from a basic Ford tractor to twin rear wheeled and specific farm implements. They got a bit cheap though as they went into the mid 90’s, the Discovery model was awful. I’ve had loads of the Land Rovers over the years, the older ones you could take apart. I sold mine a few years ago, I had the Massey Combine which was quite fragile, you got the impression they were what quite wealthy kids of farmers would have had! I don’t know how we came by them because looking at the prices we wouldn’t have paid that for them.

I wonder if the original Mini is the most modelled car across different manufacturers ever?

I think the Porsche 911 probably holds that accolade. The amount of racing versions is mind boggling.

If it's just road cars then the VW Bug has to be the most modelled.

I had some as youngster, still got most of it. Some ended up in Master SL's toybox, but I kept some back like the orange Fiat tractor and big Chafer sprayer.

I started off buying him Britain's stuff, but the quality wasn't as I remembered and I swapped over to similar scale Siku (much of which is interchangeable with Britain's).

Those are ace! I now recall my pal had a cattle truck which was badged as a 'Ford' and had headlamps on the grille sticker. Presumably it was meant to be a Cargo. Still a great toy.

You're probably the man to ask. Do you know if the Pilen Mini is an inherited casting, or is it Pilen's own? I'm trying to figure out the origin of all the 'classic' Pilen models of the 1970s and collect the original castings. I don't have one of these, or any other Mini models to comapre it to.

I did ask here before but not sure we managed to come up with a definitive answer

And these at home - MK3 is remote control but has had the wires cut off - anyone recognise it?

I think the Pilen is based on the Corgi Mini Magnifique.

You can just about see the old casting line on the Pilen front wing, it is more pronounced on the Corgi

DSCF3283.thumb.JPG.901cb9b37c672c8c0da7e1cc57eed456.JPG

The Pilen has the same two representations of the Cooper S type twin fuel tank caps seen on the Corgi

The Pilen dash looks like a modified version of the Corgi

The only real difference is the bases

DSCF3296.thumb.JPG.ba14dbb48adfde68d8d30e5aea3bf6db.JPG

And interesting factoid, the Pilen features at GT badge on the grille and 1275GT on the boot lid. This is not a mistake. Authi, who built Minis under licence in Spain, had a 1275GT model that was built using the round nose Mini, and not the Clubman.
